Your daily METAL videos thread

And to start off, something that's still a little exotic:

Fishbone - all-black, originally funk, etc-oriented but that in the early 90s branched out to some tasty metallic stuff:

Maidens got some nice stuff... but is it really Metal???   More like Operatic Rock.

Now... heres something that actually raises your Pulse:

And finally, one of my favorite lesser known songs they do:

(picks up heavily in mid song !  :)  )

Sounds really weird for them to go from Holy Wars into Mechanix instead of The Punishment Due. The jam at the end of Punishment Due is one of my all time favorites.

Well, for those (like myself) who tended to listen to whole albums in general, yeah.

Also, notice I spelled it in caps. Metal is Priest, an Maiden, etc. METAL is anything from Metallica onward - but doesn't include suck albums like Countdown to Extinction, the Black album, The Ritual.....

And now, for anotha:

And, something a little exotic from them:

So its metal unless its METAL, unless of course it's not METAL or metal?

I can't believe I agree with Xiaou2 on something. Rust in Peace is one of my favorite albums on all time. I really like Marty Friedman's contribution to that album, being a fan of his solo work, Cacophony, and his stuff on Jason Becker's solo albums. I'll be putting some other METAL videos up soon...

I'm just curious how this system works when you're having a real conversation with someone.  Do you have to yell METAL everytime you say it?  Otherwise the other person might get confused and think you're talking about metal.  And what happens when your yelling something about metal at someone because they're far away? Seems like they would be forced to think you're talking about METAL.

lol  w/  Atomsmasher.

Sorry man,  I like a few Maiden tunes (but really cant take too much of that
Opera Voice singing & religious stuff)  ... but they simply are Not metal to me.
Its almost like calling Kiss metal!   At one time people may have thought the
Beatles were hardcore... and if they were labeled metal back then... that
title would surely have to be revised today...

And as much as MDs Old tunes,  I find I listen to Countdown much more
often.  It has 2 somewhat generica songs on it which made it to radio (and
are OK) ... but the rest are rockin hardcore.  The best part is that they really
found the best EQ setting for Daves voice... which in previous older albums was
too high.

Metallica's black was ok.  I used to like their old stuff.. but I rarely listen to it
anymore.  Its just not really repeatedly enjoyable like MD is.

HEHN. Actually, I just right people on things. Let 'em know that metal is before Metallica, and that METAL is essentially thrash and some speed metal. Slayer has always been METAL, even with Reign in Blood despite its punk elements. That Fishbone above is definitely METAL in the sense that the guitars are palm-muting, the rhythm is thrashy, and the drumming is sorta thrash-like. They're also a little more than that.

Sorry TOK. Independent is the Reich album that jumped the shark. Or, rather, it blows because it's rock. Started with the Black album, and then spread out into everyone except Slayer. And then of course, bringing up the rear with the guidon were Pantera and Sepultura.

That Machine Head stuff and later things are METAL, yes, but during or after its demise, so they're sort of like bastard children.

Not a great band, but definitively METAL. Note the riffing and heavy kick drum, as well as kick triplets.

I bet just coincidence. It's quite common in tertian music, and was actually a common thing in composers to borrow from each other.

I don't think it's necessary - BUT, the link to that has been helpful in that I'll revise my system to be 'Heavy Metal' and 'Metal', respectively.

By the way, I notice it says 'Embedding disabled by request' when I click on the Fishbone 'Servitude' video. Is that through here, as in someone here complained and Saint or another mod did that?

Sorry, Frizz. Though that music is related, this isn't a death metal thread. Besides, you didn't post any good Obituary, and there just isn't any good Deicide or CC.

But here's something sorta in-between:

HELL YEAH!!!

Now I'm gonna have to crack out my Machine Head CD's tonight. Saw them twice back in 99-2000. First one was on an all-concrete amphitheater right on the river - INSANE!!! I was a few rows back from the mosh pit, and it was a brutal one. Rob jumped from a stack about 15 feet up from the crowd at the end. "You ---smurf---'s better catch me!" Best. Concert. EVAR!!

Saw them a few months later in a bar that only holds a few hundo fans. I was exhausted after that one for sure. Had some hot chick that was grinding up against me all night too. Was pretty damn sweet. Awesome Rob moment #2, he threw his cup of Gin and Tonic to some dude up in the balcony over the stage...and made it intact.

It's too bad what happened with Supercharger around 9/11. There went any chance of me ever seeing them live again. Good to see they are huge overseas though.

Hm, I hadn't actually listened to it the first time around....that Machine Head sounds kinda weak.

Sodom surely counts - but I never liked 'em.

metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.

Um. Whatever that means.

Second, anything with goofy synth sounds in it is doom/black metal. That stuff doesn't even belong here.

Lastly, 'progressive' is a non-word in metal. People throw it around without even knowing what it means to themselves. Progressive how?...harmonically?...rhythmically?...formally (as in the structure of the piece) ?  In the early 90s, I would call things 'progressive', but I realised I couldn't really explain what I meant. I was correct, however, because in the context, they were somewhat harmonically, rhythmically, and structurally progressive (particularly tracks from Sepultura's Arise). I didn't have the vocabulary to explain why, but I understood what I was hearing.

How about this one. Sepultura Arise

Only Youtube automatic embedding is...or was...available, but apparently not in this thread anymore. Don't think other formats embed at all.

Dude, you could put that whole album up here - but my favorite is Desperate Cry......EH. Damn live versions. Ehn, this'll have to do:

I lose track of all the categories, but I always took Progressive to mean bands that were more experimental with timing and used a wider variety of instruments.

Dream Theater would be the most obvious example I could think of.

I can tell people in this thread will say "They're not metal", but there seems to be a trend here of only calling what you like metal. Dream Theater played Master Of Puppets start to finish on stage, doing a better job of it than Metallica, so they definitely have metal chops.

metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.

it means that with each generation metal is pushed forward by new sounds and darker content.  metal music in general pushes the envelope on every instrument that it can be played on.

Arise was my first Sepultura album.  It's my favorite.

I saw Sepultura / Ozzy / Black Sabbath back in 1992 I think it was.  Sepultura was really out of place...but I completely dug on them.

Arise was my first Sepultura album.  It's my favorite.

I saw Sepultura / Ozzy / Black Sabbath back in 1992 I think it was.  Sepultura was really out of place...but I completely dug on them.

Yeah, I saw that tour, too, in San Diego. I stayed for the whole thing, but I didn't really care about the rest of the show after Sepultura. Especially with popcul music, I really prefer recorded. Live is messy and in metal they always play it really fast, and....blech.

DT certainly has chops. They easily can play metal, it's just that they're inherently more of a rock band. And, yes, they've played around with meter (vs time), but it's mostly monophonic in approach, and even harmonically they haven't really gone very far.

metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.

it means that with each generation metal is pushed forward by new sounds and darker content.  metal music in general pushes the envelope on every instrument that it can be played on.

Not really. Just seems to for those who aren't familiar with much older music.

And, today's offering, good old-school thrash-punk:

Yup, that's what I head way back when. Both good, though I think I prefer MOD, especially their last album (or maybe only later album?....I didn't keep up)....Hey, that's Scott Ian. I forgot he was in that band. He was definitely the speedster back then. And, hey, nice interlude into part of Reigning Blood. HAHN.

And for today, some good 'ol:

(Great combination of Dave's riffs and lyrics/vocals and killer Chris Poland leads.)

4 Of A Kind is one of my favorite albums ever. Lots of fast jamming and minimal lyrics and the way some of the songs run into each other makes it feel like they recorded the whole thing in one shot.
I have all of DRI's albums, but think this is the best one by far. I wore the cassette out, replaced it, then bought it again on CD.

Manifest Destiny and Modern World off this album are also great.
