Looking for some cool solutions to power on an off my cabinet, what has everyone else done other than a power strip.  :P

I use a Sears brand smartstrip. My pc monitor does not auto power on, so I desoldered the power tact switch, and soldered in leads for an arcade button. I use the monitor to power everything on. I set the front end to power down the pc on exit. The beautiful part is that standby mode in the monitor is not strong enough to keep the smart strip activated. So, everything shuts down still after the pc shuts down. Pretty cool huh?

Pretty sure I've seen a custom cab on here that did have something like that.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Not a radical solution, but these power buttons look great (scroll down a bit). I've considered ordering one for my cab.

I love the description for that thing...

Armed and Dangerous

The secret to the USB Doomsday Device is very simple - it has three levels of failsafe protection. In order to arm the Device, you first need to activate switch one. Then, you need to activate switch two. Then (and stay with us here, because this is where it gets a little crazy), you need to activate switch three. Switch three is a key switch, and only authorized personnel should have a copy of the key. Once all three switches are turned on (in order) the Main light will glow red. This means the Device is armed and very dangerous.

All that is left to do is flip back the plastic shield and press the red button for an explosive sound effect. But what really happens when you press the button? We're not sure. Perhaps 15 kittens explode; perhaps your bank account lowers by a fraction of a cent; perhaps you start an interplanetary war trillions of parsecs away by blowing up the caravan of Queen Knorb'l. But one thing is clear - before pushing the button, you must ask yourself, "Do I feel lucky, punk? Well...do I?" Because, who knows, the explosion you hear from the USB Doomsday Device might just be the sound of your brain vaporizing.

Those look pretty nice. How would you guys recommend wiring something like this? More or less I want two buttons to turn on two different power strips.

VQ - Did you ever get your cab shipped?  I'm anxious to see how she turned out with that awesome control panel.

I did, just got it together this last weekend. I will post some pictures soon; I wanted to wait till I got the glass install. Measuring for it tonight and ordering it tomorrow.

Those are pretty damn cool. It's not clear where the LED gets the power from. Is the power from a seperate lead or is it taken from the current through the switch?

I've seen that before and well... I think it's kind of cheesy. The concept is pretty cool, the execution is kind of not.

I dunno, I've seen photos to the so-called doomsday control panels many years ago and they're not really ever anything like what most people visualize.

NOTE: LED is rated for 3.4 Volts and the motherboard LED headers are 3.3V. This is acceptable

Most switches like that have leads for the LED. This allows you to power the LED any way you like.

What the hell is wrong with you today HarumaN? You're a bleeding comedian today! Lol.

I pissed up laughing though when I saw that! People are still looking at me strangely!

I personally like the good old push button with an intelipanel! Not a smart strip.... an intelipanel! There is a something different!

This is the pushbutton i will use to my bartop
Its a kind of mod (the metalic part is a part of a power supply unit...it used to gather the wires)
i think i like it

I made a switch plate for my 1st cab many moons ago:

Whilst wiring the thing up I managed to blow four LED switches, trip the circuit breaker three times a fry a PC  :laugh2:

I've been trying to find the thread on the mameworld forums to give you guys a laugh but I can't find it.
