Having something to invent..
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:26:14 pm »
So I have something I want to get made. Its nothing revolutionary, but I know theres a certain group of people that would be interested in it.
I haven't built one yet. I'm trying to decide if I should or go to someone and have them mass produce it for me ... if possible. I don't know how this really works.

Does anybody have any insight on this kind of thing?

thanks

Depends  a lot on what it is, but usually mass-producing means a lot of money up-front, and that's if they don't have to tool up for it. Check in Randy's Tron grips thread for what he says on this.

If it's something that will sell very good, you may want to think about a patent.
But that means more money and time.

The easiest way to make money off a great idea, is to invent it, patent it, then sit back and earn royalties from licensing it to other companies. This way you don't have the headache, overhead and risk of having to build an entire business around one product. No need for a factory, distribution, convincing retailers to carry it, marketing, etc, etc, etc.... Let an experienced company assume that risk.
