Powering NovaMatrix marquee light / NovaGemCDR™ Coin button
« on: November 11, 2008, 10:25:18 pm »
I am in the final stages of builing my cab, and before I power the PC for the first time, I wanted to make sure that I got this right.  Since the marquee light needs 12v, I cut the yellow 12v wire from the power supply and spliced it with the red 12v wire that connects to actual marquee light (I also connected the two black ground wires).  As for the coin button, which uses 5v, I cut the red 5v wire from the power supply and spliced it with the red wire from the button (also, black ground to ground).  In order to splice the wires, I first stripped them, and then crimped a QD onto them.  I then cut the metal piece off the end (since it's not connecting to anything), and applied black electrical tape so that there is no exposed metal.
Does this all sound ok, or should I expect to fry my motherboard?   :dunno

Basically you turned a disconnect into a butt connnector, right? (http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/5200/BUTT-CONNECTOR-BLUE/-/1.html)

You can also use wire nuts (http://www.vosslighting.com/storefrontB2BWEB/img/staging/ACC/Red_Wirenut.jpg) to 'splice' the two wires together, then just do a quick wrap of the nut with some electrical tape.  Bit easier to disconnect later if necessary.

Or, even better, get a male/female quick disconnect set and attach one to each side of the junction.  Then you can connect/disconnect as needed. ;)
