TV as monitor - slight issue
« on: November 06, 2008, 02:18:55 pm »
I'm using a 27" Toshiba CRT TV as my monitor.

Looks great when in MAME but I've noticed that there's a "ghosting effect" in the background of games such as Galaga. Any game with a black background. For example in galaga you can see a faint trail left by the flying bugs that stays for about 30 seconds.

What causes this and how can I fix it?

Thanks.

How is it connected to your computer?

I'm thinking it probably has something to do wit the monitor refresh rate or something similar. I'm not sure what the refresh rate should be set at for a tv.

if it's standard res, it's going to be 60hz. Thirty seconds is a long time. More than three second would be a long time. Pictures or/and video might help.

Is it really thirty seconds? Thirty seconds is a really long time. For that amount of time, the screen would fill up with so many shadow ghosts you probably wouldn't be able to tell ghost from an enemy.

Do you think you could show us a picture or better yet a video feed of this effect?

I'm still trying to get the means to make a video.

The "ghost trails" are very faint. I was originally checking it out wit the lights off which made them stand out more. With the lights on their not as bad.

Like I said though, the lines are faint and do not look as prominent as the actual graphics that are being displayed.

So i'd say they remain faintly for about 30 seconds (with lights off) and just show a slight 1-2 pixel trail when the lights are on. Like the monitor can't quite keep up with the graphics.

So I guess in general I'm asking what do some of you do to lessen the "trailing" effect?

CRTs have a certain trailing. I find it charming, actually. LCDs can 'ghost', too, but I've found it unappealing because of their innate color presentation. No experience in either case that compares to your description though.

I adjusted some setting for the video card and it's much better. Oddly enough the game that shows it anymore really is galaga.

I'm goign to be putting #14 gray smoked plexi glass over the tv anyway and I have a feeling it will not be visible once I do that.
