X-arcade trackball button questions
« on: November 02, 2008, 11:08:39 am »
Hello eveyone.  I recently purchased a x-arcade trackball for my control panel.  Not like the whole tankstick, but just the trackball.  Here is the link to it:
http://www.xgaming.com/arcade_trackball_part.shtml
There are four buttons that come with the trackball.   The left and right click mouse buttons I have figured out.  The other two I have not.   Allegedly one of the other buttons is the middle mouse click button and the other is a button that is supposed to be the "golf cheat" button where it disabled the right and left movement of the mouse.   I can't get the last two buttons to work.   Everywhere I look online it says that windows should recognize the x-arcade trackball as a three button mouse, but so far as I can tell Windows only thinks it has two buttons.    I do have a separate 3 button mouse hooked up to the computer, and the middle click button does work.     You're not supposed to need a driver to get the third button to work on the trackball, but it seems to me like you do.   Also, this "golf cheat" button doesn't seem to disable any sort of direction, so I am further confused.

Can any help me out on getting my pc to recognize the other two buttons? The middle click and the golf cheat one?

Let me know if you need more information.  Thanks!
-Mark

I don't know about getting the middle click button working, but you really only need the main 2 buttons if you don't want to use the third.

The golf cheat button sounds like it probably is device specific and might not be recognized in windows anyway. When you press it, can you move the mouse cursor horizontally in windows?

I have this trackball too. I can only get right-click to work!  It means ive used the left and right buttons inputs on the minipac instead.  Which is annoying, cos I wanted to free them up for other things.   what color wire is the left click for your xarcade trackball?

There is a bug that occurs on occasion when you have both your trackball and a regular mouse plugged in. What will happen is that your Mouse loses "focus" on the active window (Your left mouse button won't register) and alt-tab will restore it...until it happens again. Ensure you don't have another mouse plugged in.

AFAIK, the golf cheat is all internal to the USB board, and just forces zeros on the X axis before it's sent over the USB cable.  As said, no software at all.

The middle button is a funny thing in windows.  Sometimes it needs a special driver, sometimes the three button works with the driver windows automatically gives it.  (Remember, "no drivers" means "windows already has a driver that works with this device".)  99% of windows apps don't use the middle button, and most drivers can, and do, change what pressing the middle button sends applications.  Mame is one of the few apps that read mice through RawInput, which is "lower" than most driver middle button remaps, so the question is, in mame, can you map the middle button?  (What about the other mouse's middle button?)  Unless you know the difference between a middle button press in windows and the action a remapped middle button, don't try to compare the TB and the mouse's actions in windows.

If you can't remap middle button in mame, and the golf cheat doesn't work, sounds like either a wiring error, or the TB's USB board isn't working like it should.

Have anymore info on this?  Is it X-arcade TB only, or multiple mice related?  I don't remember hearing of this one.

This is quite strange.  I disconnected my other mouse and tried with only the x-arcade TB plugged.  This time I could not get any individual switches to register.  I could however use a left click when I pressed two of the switches at the same time.  I can't remember which color wires did what.  I will try again tonight an update this thread.  Does anyone know which color wires are left/right/middle/horizontal disabler?

Thanks

I just checked this on my own X-Arcade Trackball, and found the wiring colors from X-Arcade's website are wrong!  Mouse buttons #1 and #3 are switched.  My trackball actually uses:

white=#1
brown=#2
orange=#3
blue=horizonal disabler
black=ground
