Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Noob Saibot Wavenet information ???

Anyone ever seen the so called Wavenet UMK3 machine in action with Noob Saibot as a playable character ? I would like to see if anyone has any info on how to aquire this ? I believe from what I've read it was a mishap that was only released in Chicago and San Fran, but thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has this or knowns how I can aquire this.
I have read that it was a dedicated T1 line that ran to Midway to test the game out. I wonder if this is anyway playable these days ?

As I recall, it was pure rumour, possibly even started by a gaming magazine for an April Fools issue. (but you know how people are... once a rumor is out, there's no disbelieving with some folks!)

it's not a rumor the info is on evry description of UMK3 on the internet. I'm simply trying to see if anyone played it and had more info on it.

I don't remember seeing Noob in the arcade. There was a human smoke though, maybe some people confused that?

I do remember playing as Noob on the Sega Genesis release of UMK3. Using him was borderline cheating - his moves ROCKED!

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Wave Net was a rare network version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. It was tested only in the Chicago and San Francisco areas so many people outside this area were not aware of its existence during its release. One outlet that stocked it still has the T1 line used for it installed. This version included extras that were available even in local play. It ran over a T1 line that was directly connected back to Midway HQ in Chicago.

One of the reasons this version wasn't widely adopted was the rarity and cost of T1 lines at the time. The game was released before alternative broadband access was available. At the time, a T1 was the only guaranteed way to get broadband into an arcade, but the game didn't utilize the full bandwidth of the T1. Midway subsidized the cost of the line during the tests to make it more attractive to the arcade owners.

It is highly unlikely that any WAVENet test games were ever released to the public after the infrastructure was dismantled, and so there are no known dumps of the ROMs used by the games designed for it.

You really love your MK don't you?! 

I used to love these 'what if?' rumours back in the day! Some turned out true (the early rumours of a Nintendo CD - fruition in to the Playstation), some were a load of tripe (rumours of cheats to access characters/gore in censored games) but they all encouraged healthy debate and gave free advertising!

MK was one of the biggest generator of rumours as even the makers played on it ('Kano Transformations' in the MK2 arcade settings). Seeing as there was a 'Challenger Hack' of MK2, don't be surprised if there was an early/prototype/hacked version of MK3 with Noob playable.

Then again, with this 'limited locale' back story it could just be another Polybius.

The EGM created MK1 Art Lean rumor was the best of all time. They even had a screen shot of Art doing his front flip decapitation. They even had clear cut directions on how to do the trick. Man I played for HOURS to do this, and I eventually got it down pat. What a ---smurfing--- letdown!

I recently have seen a Mortal Kombat with an extra board for network play for sale.  I can't remember if it was on eBay or another forum.  I also can't remember which Mortal Kombat it was.  I'll do some searching and see if I can find it again.

I believe the idea behind it was so they could have tournies at different arcades and then for example, the winner in San Fran could Fight the Winner in chicago. its a good idea but the technology at the time wasnt cost efficient. The crazy part is, it'd totally work nowadays just hook a cab up to a cable modem, but now that the technology is here and affordable, the arcades arent.

Far as I know, they don't have any version of Mortal Kombat with official online play. X-box maybe? I don't own that system so I dont know.

PS3 has MK2 with online play.
Xbox360 has UMK3 with online play.

Both... are laggy as ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  Almost completely and totally unplayable like Street Fighter online games.

There are 2 versions of the Wavenet where Noob Saibot was playable in arcades.  And they had different versions of Noob Saibot.

and I believe if it was dumped it would be nearly worthless in MAME.

The impression I get from every piece of information I've seen about it is that there was some kind of client->server model (rather than cab->cab connections)  The server software would manage the games, perform the matchmaking, handle the rankings etc. etc.

Without BOTH the server and client software, it's not going to do much, and you can bet there was only one copy of the server software somewhere at Midway and that's long gone, even if the boards aren't.

So, even if a board shows up, it probably won't be that interesting from the point of view of a gamer, I'm still inclined to think a lot of what is said about it is nothing more than rumours tho, I'd be surprised if there were extra characters, rather than just a crude attempt to implement a network ranking system which ultimately failed.

No, it's a user made hack (at least the one floating about) not one which was used on the arcade boards back in the day.  I believe misfit supports it, if not, the next version of misfit will.

just FYI, I had hobbyroms burn me a set and put them in my UMK3 boardset and it worked fine.

Wavenet isn't a rumor! However, this is the first time I've ever heard of MK3 Wavenet.


Forget the Zeus hack. Now a days we use the Juggernaut hack.


No reason to unlock characters, or pick R. Smoke to get H. Smoke. New ladder boards, fixed combo scoring, end & bio screens for characters that didn't have one before. Will work on the real board, or any mame that doesn't require you to verify the romset.

I'll have to contact steph and get this. Do you have the rom files? So if he doesnt have them I can pass them along. I have the legit UMK3 V1.1 and 1.2 boards incase you were wondering, and I'd love to put that in my machine.  If only they had a hack where you can play the "galaxian" game all the time, instead of entering the code before every match.

I extracted the WaveNet ROM from the recent "Legacy Kollection" game and got it working in MAME. You can download the IPS patch files in this archive to patch your existing u54 and u63 UMK3 roms to WaveNet:

You'll have to run MAME with the "-debug" flag (e.g. mame.exe -debug umk3) and you will get a checksum error. I've submitted everything to the MAME team so hopefully native support will be in a future version.

You also have to enable this cheat first to get the Noob Saibot transformation (Pick Kano, and hold Back + LP + HP + LK + BL before the match starts):

Thanks for this.   I'm waiting patiently for the physical release of the game.   I'll be damned if I pay $50 for a digital release of a retro compilation.

FYI - According to MANY reviews... the new MK re-release... has major Input Lag issues.
This has caused a LOT of people to become extremely Ticked off, as a result.

There are also other issues, such as the 32x version?, mission certain sounds

Additionally... the Online functionality is extremely limited, and Buggy.
Someone tried to join an MK3 fight... and ended up being paired with an MK4 fight instead
Stuff like that.

So... If you are considering purchase... you might want to wait to see, if they can Fix the issues, before
a purchase.

Now.. even if you get a CD version of the game... you probably should expect it to have limitations.  For example,
in the future... the Servers that connect people, might cease to Operate.. making that part of your game,
completely useless.  Im not sure if theres a way to have a Manual connection to others.. without going
through one of their dedicated servers.


I believe Warner Brothers is in the process of trying to Sell off the Company, as I believe they are going Bankrupt.
As such, changes could be dramatic.. and swift.  It might also be why this game was Rushed out quickly, before
fixing the various Issues.

The one Video I watched speaking about these issues... seemed to think that there was no Input Lag issues with
the PC version.  However... in the Comments section, people were angerly saying otherwise.  Some saying that
they had to slow down their combos, just to try to get them to work / register.

The game was just "released" but the physical release, even just the basic game with no swag, isn't released until December 12th.   Why do they do this?   So the early adopters can do free beta testing for them, and they have time to get a day one patch ready for the real release on December 12th.   This has been basic operating procedure for WB for a while now so I'm not particularly worried.   As for the online play, it would certainly be nice, but that isn't what a digital eclipse collection is about, and it isn't the reason I buy them.   There will be a ton on in depth interviews and such and that is why I want it.   I bought Atari 50 and barely played the games on it but I'm more than satisfied with my purchase.   


Meh WB has merged with another company like 4 times since I've been alive.... they just do that kind of thing.   When Ghostbusters came out Columbia pictures was by Coca Cola.... now they are owned by Sony.
