Project "M"
« on: September 28, 2008, 04:09:10 pm »
Hi everyone! After a loooong time off of this forum, I think I might return! : )

Almost one year ago, I got hold of a nice, 37 inch Mitsubishi CRT which only cost me 35,- Euros - getting it home (up to the 3rd floor (no elevator)) was another story...

I think it was around February, when I decided what to do with it. I already had my other project (The "Game Exhibition" Upright/Candy crossover) which was and is far from complete, but I got and still am bored of it...

Well, for my new project, I got inspired by the Sega Megalo 50, Super Megalo 2 and Naomi Deluxe Universal sitdowns:

http://arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=4779
http://arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=4476

So: "M" stands for Megalo - a little bit scaled down, although the CRT used in the Naomi Deluxe is only one inch bigger...

Other things I wanted to accomplish:

- not another Mame cabinet, but one to showcase my Sega Naomi, Triforce and Atomiswave games
- besides a "dedicated" 6 button panel in the looks of the big originals, I also wanted it be compatible to other Sega control panels (dedicated analog panels for Virtua Striker 4 for example)

Well, I have to say, that I work verrrry irregularly on it - I decided to put it into this section to get some motivation and finally to get some go again...

Enclosed are some pics showing the different stages it went through until the recent - enjoy. BTW: The game my buddy is playing is Virtua Fighter 4.

Feel free to comment.

Cheers and regards,
Akuma

thanks!

actually I don't have any blueprints yet as I am designing "on the fly". I know this is ineffective and I have redone the CP box 3 times until I was finally satisfied with it... but well, that is just how I am - the artist, not the technician ; ) But I am sure that I will draw blueprints, once it is finally completed!

I know what you mean. I get excited and just start working on it without thinking. Thankfully I've started breaking that habit and trying to learn the technical aspects of building cabinets.

Got a quick question for you.

Where by chance did you pick up that Naomi board? I've been looking around but don't know of any real good sources other than ebay or coinopexpress to get them.

thanky

Quick reply: I am an Ebay guy. Actually Naomi 1 motherboards start to become really affordable. You will have to get some extra stuff to make it run though, mainly an I/O PCB, the rest can get substituted (e.g. a PC ATX PSU instead of a costly original PSU). Another source are arcade communities - sadly the best one (killercabs.com) is down for undetermined time - perhaps it will never come back. Forget coinopexpress, as they are too expensive imho.
