Help with a "creaky" joystick
« on: August 21, 2008, 12:51:24 pm »
I've been playing a LOT of shooters lately, and started to notice my Happ Competition 8-way joystick is starting to "creak" while moving; almost sounding like it needs lubrication(?). Is there a way to fix this?
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

The first step is to figure out where the noise if coming from.  I would remove the e-clip and the square actuator from the bottom of the stick so no switches can be hit and see if it still makes the noise.  If so, it's likely the internal spring.

Pull the whole thing apart and shoot some silicone spray inside the spring cavity.  Make sure you get a good shot everywhere the spring makes contact with the plastic, as well at the parts where the spring coils back on itself.  I'm guessing you won't have any creaking after that.

Don't waste it; if you can get rid of an irritating squeak with a bit of lubrication you're good to go. Wouldn't bin a car if it needed an oil change would you?
