Is there a way to bookmark threads within the forum software?  I know that I can bookmark them in my browser, but I use multiple computers and don't really want to try to keep bookmarks synced between them or run a mobile browser.

It's a bit cheap but if you post in the thread there are 4-5 different built in queries that pull all of those threads up.

Heh . . . that's not a bad idea (if kind of obnoxious to others).  I can just make a post that says, "Bookmarked," and anytime I want to access my bookmarks I can just run a query for that word.  I can't decide if I'll start doing that.  It would get pretty annoying if it became commonplace and even ten members did this with any regularity.  Regardless, that's thinking on your feet.   :applaud:

reading shmokes reply i didnt get the impression he understood you, as it seems he was going to post the word  bookmarked in a thread and then search for that word.

He understood me perfectly.  He gave another suggestion similar to mine.  His would be more effective but more annoying.

No, I understood.  But what made me think of the subject to begin with was a couple of threads where a question was asked and answered by the time I saw the thread, and I thought, "That's something I bet I'm going to run into down the line.  I want to bookmark that."  So, specifically, I was talking about threads that would make no sense for me to post in.

If I use the new replies to my posts link, wouldn't that treat every thread I post in as bookmarked?

You could send yourself a PM with the thread/message URL in. You could even use the {url=www.}thread{/url} tags (but obv with []'s) to give it a descriptive name.

You could 'add' new bookmarks to it by quoting the previous PM and including the new bookmark before sending it to yourself. You could then delete the old PM to keep things tidy.

We could even start a bookmarks thread similar to the picture hosting thread in project annoncements. You could then add your bookmarks to the thread and then just keep modifying your message to add the new bookmarks. It could also make interesting and useful reading if you have lots of peoples descriptive bookmarks in one thread.

Good idea!  Now that one I just might do.  Idea of posting the word "bookmark" in threads would work pretty well, but it wouldn't be nearly as well organized as using {url} tags in a personal message.  Also the PM idea wouldn't bother anyone else.

I also like the idea of people contributing useful bookmarks.  That would make a cool sticky in this or the main forum.  It's kind of halfway between the organized material in the Wiki and the absolute jumble of useful tidbits scattered throughout the forum.

i like the idea guys, so i can create a thread called eg polaris bookmarks, i can have one link to that in my browser favourites and just paste links into the first post of the thread and lock it i suppose, so its there for my reference. but what forum should i create it in, be nice if there was a 'my byoac' sub forum that we could all create a personal link list in.
i like the idea of a general thread one as a pre wiki but id like my own one too.
i might create one and see where it gets moved to.

Well . . . you could do what Franco suggested and just send yourself a PM.  Anytime you want to add a new bookmark you can just copy and past the old bookmarks into a new PM, add the new bookmark and send it.  Then just delete the old bookmark PM.  That way you don't have to keep bumping your locked bookmark thread to the top of a forum every time you want to add a new bookmark.  That would be irritating, especially if more people started doing it.

Do you think we should start a 'bookmarks' thread? I for one think it would be really useful i more ways than one. I often use at least three computers to access this site and it would be nice to have all my 'bookmarks' in one place. In  certain instances I have refrained from bookmarking certain threads as I knew I wouldn't get chance to recall them on a different computer (well that was before I had the PM idea but I think a community bookmark thread would be more beneficial.)

I'm not sure what forum it should be in if it was to happen. Probably not Main as it may confuse new comers to this site. Maybe a sticky in this forum?

Obviously it may not be moderated as much as the Wiki additions but people could always report offending posts/links to the mods. I really do think it could open up many links/resources to all of us and would also help people who either don't know how to share or don't realise the potential that the links they have contain.
