Have I fried my Opti-pac??
« on: August 04, 2008, 04:04:06 pm »
I wired my opti-pac to a steering wheel using the appropriate hack. Everything was working fine for weeks until I diconnected everything today so I could install the hardware into my cabinet. Now, when I hook things back up, when I turn the wheel to the left or to the right, the pointer moves semi sporatically to the the left only. Have I fried the opti pac or have I done something else??

Sounds like your optical encoder board, do you have a trackball or other controller with an encoder board you can hook up to test?

Check all your connections and your cabinet power supply. You may have a loose connection or a bad earth.

Ok, I checked my voltage coming off the optipac and it's 5v. I checked the voltage all the way down to the encoder and it reads 5v. I am using a Pole Position steering wheel again with the appropriate hack. I checked all of the connections and they seem tight. All of the solder points seem good. Everything was working fine until I started messing with things. What is a bad earth??

Thanks. BTW, I had a look at all of the connections and back tracked. I started from scratch and decided to bypass the existing quick connector since it was over 25 years old. I soldered all the wires directly to the board and voila we have success. The Optipac is running like a charm again.
