wg u5000 with no red? Fixed!!!!
« on: June 25, 2008, 06:34:49 pm »
I just just received a good condition 25 inch wg u5000 dual res monitor, however after putting it through it paces there is no red, I have tried all of the adjustment on the neck board but still I am missing red.

Any troubleshooting advice.

I have a 25 inch polo 1 tube laying around, would I hurt anything if I swap the tube out and see if red is still missing or is this most likely a cap issue on the chassis?

u5000 suffer from bad solder joints and bad drive transistors on the neck card
pretty sure the u5000 had a 0.600mh yoke so if you connect your polo tube you will fry the horizontal output stage :o

Try swapping color transistors first.  U5000 (and the others that use that neckboard) are notorious for eating them.  Usually green, but any color is game.

A few more questions

I am new to reading schematics  can someone help me before I order parts. Is the circled part a Q505 like I think it is?
I will be testing the tube hopefully sometime this week.

I had some time today to look everything over really well and I am completely missing this part, would this have been removed for any of the 3 upgrade kits available for this monitor, and for that matter how can I tell if the upgrade kits have been installed or not?
What do I look for?

Thanks

Q505 is the schematic reference.  The transistor part number will be noted either in the schematics in the parts list, or on the transistor itself.

Ok I have the part # for the transistor (its npn sanyo 2sc3782)  but what is the part number for the (It looks like a heat sink that surrounds it)?

and how do I know if the upgrade kits have been installed or not?

Just reuse the old heat sink.

Gotcha.  Wells Gardner would have them.  But any small filled heat sink would do the job as long as you can attach it securely.

I made a few calls to local arcade shops in the area, and found one that had the transistor and heat sink, I picked them up on my way home from work ( I even bought an extra just in case) 5 minute solder job, fired her up and I now have red, I spent about 5 minutes adjusting thing and now have a beautiful picture, I have to splice the power as the cab it's going into has a different connector for power.

Many thanks as if weren't for the helpful direction provided here I would not have know where to start looking.
What a good feeling...... my first solder job...... and monitor repair.
Now I want to cap something with my newly learned skills. ;D
