Gotta love the DK machine. Is that a restore or built from the ground up? Either way, awesome!

I plan to make my second cab a DK cab. But I guess it helps if I get started on my first cab. :dunno

There is thread on the DK on here somewhere.
They are a beautiful cab. Good luck with yours.

I have a few favorites but leapinlew's tempest project is my most current favorite. tempest is one of my all time favorite games. Ive always wanted a dedicated cab for this game and a bartop is a nice compromise. I am jealous its not mine. I would have never been able to pull off the curve of the control panel design though.  I dont have enough patience.

Ha ha ha.

I gave up posting Project threads a while ago. Dunno why. When I build a cab I just get the job done. I do take pics along the way but would end up boring you guys to death with details and threads.

I usually post up pics here:
http://www.picturetrail.com/vfcoupe

I just went through and deleted some pics. Almost ashamed to say I built some of those early ones.  :laugh2:
I have another page as well but it doesn't have much in it at the mo'. Just a Ms Pac and that Grey Defender. I have a heap of pics to upload. Ah, one day.

Thanks mate.
I really like those too. Wasn't sure about it when it was in planning but once it was done it looked cool.

The CP is the best part. Very simple and clean. The bubbletop stick really sets it off.
This was before the bubbletop:

The CP is a digital print. A simple purple - pink- purple fade in photoshop.
Then it was covered by a product called Graffiti Guard and then applied to the CP. Signwriters use it to protect prints that my get tagged. Basically it is like Mylar probably around 1mm thick which creates a depth in the colour. You can get it in thinner varieties but I like the thick one best.

This is how it originally looked:

I didn't like it so I sanded it down and resprayed:

Then added the stripes, new CP overlay and marquee and it looks heaps better.

Sorry for the hijack :)

Well the project that made me start looking into the hobby was 1-Up's PacMamea, however it looks like all the sites and pics are down :(

The one that showed me just how far one could go was supercade.

That red Kong looks amazing.
I am soo gonna build another and do it red, along with the blue DKII as well.

Thanks.
In New Zealand we didn't get any USA cabs. If you want one you have to import or build.
I have an Original Defender, Robotron and Dragons Lair. Thats it, so far ;)

Spacies: The coin door you use, I recognize it from Ultimarc, is that a coindoor commonly used in your part of the world? I've never seen one in the US except for that cab they build on Systm.

Nope. We had very ugly generic doors.
These are made in China mate :)

hi spacies,

can you explain in a Little more detail how you did the "Graffiti Guard" laminate?
That is exactly the look I'm going for on my cab
Is this the product?
did you print it then apply the film over the print or did you apply the print to the cp first,
what did you print the gradation on?

any info would be very much appreciated,

thanks,

Bender

You know, I saw the walls of an elevator I rode in this morning covered in this stuff. I thought it was interesting how it was a giant sticker, but now I know. It's gotta be GBC™ brand Arctic® Graffiti :P. Pricey stuff though.

Oh mate, its in a bad way at the moment. I haven't touched it yet. There is a big chunk gone on the front edge (through t-molding and into the wood), the CP is worn to the metal and its dusty and dirty. I haven't even turned it on! Last time it was powered up was 15 years ago.

I will do a resto soon though.

Yeah that is the stuff. Pretty thick and very tough.
The product was applied to the print 1st. It was done using the wet method which is 1 drop of dish washing detergent in a spray bottle filled with water. Soak both the digi print and the sticky side of the laminate. Stick them together and work the water out, starting from the centre heading towards the edges.  Then it was applied to the CP. :)

To get a small bit for a CP, call in and talk to your local sign writer.

Yeah it is used in areas that get tagged a bit. You can wash it done with chemicals to remove spray paint and marker pens. Its a very resilient product. Its not cheap if you buy a roll but a small bit will only be about $10.

Thanks so much for the info,
just one more question what type of print were you able to spray water on and not have it ruined?

I had been browsing and perusing this site on and off for a while before I actually decided to set myself down and commit to owning one.

Although I didn't really know about the "UAII stock" when I was originally looking at it, The Heavy Metal Arcade cabinet is what really threw me over originally:

Visually it was a sight to behold because I just love Heavy Metal... When I saw that I knew I had to have a cab.

And since.... two words:  Mission Control.

Hi Spacies,

Thanks so much for the info,
just one more question what type of print were you able to spray water on and not have it ruined?

They are standard prints with solvent inks. Most signwriters use solvent inks for this very purpose. Have a chat with them. They will steer you in the right direction.

Okay, I now have a new favorite project:

My next project will be one of these. I have some spare lumber and a big piece of 5/8" from an old desk that I took apart last year. Very nice bartop Spacies!!! I saw this posted last year, but I didn't know I wanted to make a bartop until this year.
