This makes me angry about posting here on this site
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:31:02 pm »
Second time this has happened to me,
I type a long response and after I attach a few pictures (that happen to exceed the size limit) My entire post or attempted post is gone. It would make more sense to just reject the attachment instead of deleting my entire post.
just venting.

Whenever I do a long post on any web forum, I highlight and copy the text before I post.
It takes 2 seconds, and if the forum bombs out you can just paste and resubmit. I've never had a problem here, but still do it out of habit.

You think thats bad?

In my calculation software package at work, if you slip and hit the period button when inputting data the whole program crashes. No backup or anything. And to rub salt in the wound, a little error window pops up so you can still see your work in the background but know there is no way to save what is on the screen.

I try to save often, but sometimes you get in a groove and forget.

::Off rant::

I also get annoyed when I lose a post here, but its just a frikkin arcade forum.

Yep. I've never had a problem here, but I've always copied my text before posting. Saved my butt plenty of times elsewhere.

Thats one thing I like about the Opera browser, pushing the back button doesn't automatically reload the page, it just grabs the one out of the cache. This means if something gets messed up when I hit the submit post button, all I have to do is go back a page and I'm back to the edit screen where my post is just as I left it.  Often when I'm writing a post, I'll use the back button to see the entire thread, then when I push the forward button my post is still there waiting to be finished and submitted.

Wow..I wish Mozilla would incorporate that feature into Firefox.

This is a good topic.

I've had this happen on here before to, to combat it I do exactly what TOK mentioned. It's such a habit now that I highlight and copy almost anything before sending it...forum posts, emails, etc.

I've lost probably a dozen posts to BYOAC that way.  I try to remember to copy and paste, but it happens so rarely I've never been able to develop the habit.  The first time it happened I had written an enormous Wiki article about using laminate instead of paint for your cab.  It was really in-depth and included step-by-step instructions and diagrams, talked about pros and cons, etc.  I was really proud of it.  Then it disappeared.  I've never had enough ambition to write it again.

BTW, that Opera thing sounds great.  I doubt I'll switch -- I love Firefox and the various extensions I can't live without, especially since Firefox 3 came out and I've fallen in love with the brilliant address bar.  But it certainly is a feature that I hope Mozilla incorporates soon.

Yeah, just ctrl-a, ctlr-c before submitting any big piece of text anywhere in a browser!
Or better, use a thing like notepad or texteditor for extensive stories. The last one even includes spell-check for better quality posting.
What I don't like, is that login always directs me to some random page, instead of back to the page where I chose the login button. Guess the routine does not work well with multi-tab environments.

Sounds like a similar reason I'll probably never switch from Opera, I'm hooked on their mouse gestures.  I've tried the mouse gesture plugins in both mozilla and IE, but neither of them work nearly as well, and now that I've used them for so many years, I can't imagine using a browser that doesn't have them.

How are the Mouse Gestures on other browsers any different? I used them on Internet Explorer for a while and it worked fine. I just tried them in Opera and it works exactly the same way?

On the other hand, I felt the mouse gestures made my arm hurt and I didn't see the advantage really so I stopped using them.

It just doesn't work as well.  I currently still have them installed on IE and I have to hold the button down longer before it registers that I want to use a gesture, then I have to move it further for it to understand the movement, and even then it doesn't read the gesture correctly as often as Opera.  In Opera I use very small quick mouse movements for the gestures, just small flicks, so I end up moving my arm a lot less then moving the mouse up to the back/forward/etc. button and its a lot more intuitive since I don't have to search for the button or command that I want it to do.

I used mouse gestures on my laptop with my little bluetooth mouse, and they were pretty great.  I noticed that there were a number of different mouse gesture extensions and the one that I downloaded had reviews saying things like, "Finally a mouse gesture extension that works as well as Opera's."

I don't use gestures on my desktop cos my mouse has like eight buttons already (Logitech MX 1000).  On the laptop I only really used a few gestures with any regularity at all.  I might be inclined to use more gestures, I suppose, if I didn't already have so many keyboard shortcuts etched into my muscle memory.

It's been a while since I've searched for new gesture plugins in the other browsers, so its possible they've finally gotten it right.  I probably still won't be switching anytime soon since I like many of Operas other features.  Some of the features seem like cheap gimmicks, but I've come to really like them, such as the speed dial which is basically a glorified bookmarks page, but I've come to really like it.  Also, in the address bar, if you type a word it in it, not only does autocomplete kick in, but it starts showing every url you've recently visited that had that word somewhere on the page (not just in the title or url, but anywhere on the page) which I'm finding to be very useful at times.

Anyways, all the browsers have their cool features, so everyone can find one they enjoy most  ;D

You originally write posts that make even less sense than the ones that actually make it on the forum?  Shocking :o

I do sort of the same thing.  I'm not doing it to protect my post though.

I write my post in Outlook, so it catches my misspellings and some of me grammar mistakes.

Then I copy it out of there and paste it into here.

Weird.  I'm using XP and Firefox 3.0 and it spellchecks fine.  It even spellchecked when I was still using the 2.x tree.
