Source for cheap DB-25 cables for control panels?
« on: May 21, 2008, 01:42:03 pm »
I'm ready to convert my swappable panels from 50-pin SCSI to 25-pin DB25 connectors. The internal SCSI cables just don't make good quick disconnects (they haven't held up well) and I can't use switch-boxes or make fancy connector blocks, or expand easily. Time to redo this mess.

Anyway, I need at least 4 good quality 3-6 foot straight-through cables with color coded wires. Some of you probably just sourced some for your cabinet. Can you point me in the right direction? I don't want to spend too much on cables that I'll just cut in half. :)

Check mouser.com, lots of varieties and lengths, not too pricey.

Check out PCH Cables (http://store.pchcables.com/serparcab.html). They've got great prices. His shop is just down the street from me, though most of his sales come from online orders. He's a great guy.

If DB-37 cables are appealing to you (I used them for my swappable panels), then Winford is your place: http://www.winfordeng.com/products/cat_cables.php.

All good leads. I was actually going to order from monoprice.com just before I posted here. But I wanted to be sure I'd get straight through cables with color-coded wires. Can you guys confirm that all these cables are likely to be color-coded? Or am I just being silly about this?

Another vote for Winford. I don't think you will find color-coded cables, though.
Old, but not obsolete.

So I have to tone out each wire? I'm not against it, but I've seen cables with colored wires. Makes it easier to identify what is what. I guess I'd still tone it out to make certain I have the right wire.

I just didn't want to end up getting wacky cables that will make me pull my hair out...

My cables (from both PCH and Winford) are color coded. Knowing what pins the colors correspond to is another matter. I just used my multimeter to figure that out - fortunately it makes a beeping noise when there's near zero resistance.
