My control panel is complete! (Thanks for all the help!)
« on: March 17, 2008, 09:58:57 am »
Thanks to all the examples and help here, I've finished the top of my control panel. I haven't built the rest yet, but here it is.

All Happ parts from DM (www.arcadeemulator.net)

2 Happ Universals

7 buttons each (wired as six)

Player 1, Pause, and Player 2

Spinner (hard drive bearing with an optical mouse hack)

I will be adding pinball buttons when the rest is complete. (Maybe)

1/8" Plexi-glass (Lowes)

The Marvel poster can be found at Wal-mart or K-mart.

Notice how Juggernaut's head is the perfect place for a spinner.

The pictures didn't turn out great. This thing looks WAY better in person.

EDIT: I have swapped out the Happ Universals for a set of U360s.

Thanks. I'm too cheap to buy a proper CP overlay, but I saw on here where someone used a poster, so I thought if I found one I liked, I'd give it a go. Decided to look while I was Wal-mart the other night and thought that one would look pretty nice.

Here's what the poster looked like (click to go to site for enlarged version)

GinsuVictim,

Nice artwork, I did the same thing a while ago after not really being able to commit to any of my own designs (aka, I suck at artistic creativity).  Did people look at you funny and pull their children close to them, as they did to me, when they walked by just as you are turning the big poster display to a half naked boy band poster?

Try taking a picture of the CP in a very bright room with no flash and the picture will come out a lot better. It's better to place the camera somewhere opposed to holding it or get slight motion blur when taking the pic.

We have no bright rooms. We keep it fairly dark. Also, for some odd reason, my camera takes blurry pictures with the flash off. Even in daylight (which there's a lack of now in this area), we have to turn the flash on or the pictures are blurry.
That's the best I can manage.

Can you post where you found the spinner hack.  I have a HD bearing and a mouse but havn't really gotten around to hacking it yet.

did you use anything to adhere the poster to the CP? Or is it just sanwitched between it and the plexi?

Nice panel and again I like the layout.  Thoughts of copying in progress...

I used the Arcade Stupidity HD hack, but instead of using a ball mouse, I'm using an optical mouse I got from work that was broken (buttons didn't work, but the rest is fine).

I drilled a 1 1/4" hole through the aluminum plate that comes with the 3x2x1" project enclosure from Radio Shack.

I mounted the hard drive bearing in this hole, placed a foam washer from a CD/DVD-R spindle around it, placed the collar on the bearing, then screwed the top of the bearing on. I used the foam washer to make the spinner more snug and less wobbly.

After that, I super glued two large washers to the bottom of the bearing. The largest one on bottom is what the optical mouse reads as a surface.

I bought a 4-pack of metal standoffs at Radio Shack.

Two of these I used to hold the optical mouse board in place, and one I used to attach the knob.

I held the mouse laser up to the washer and tried to determine the best placement to get a good left/right movement. This was trial and error, and it's still a little off, but reads great. Once I found a good spot, I marked it with a pencil and drilled two small holes in the aluminum plate. I attached the standoffs and put a drop of super glue on each. Depending on the mouse you use will determine where you place the screws from the standoffs. Apply super glue to this point.

Sorry if this wasn't super helpful. I'm at work, so I can't get too in-depth.

EDIT: Here's a terrible picture of it. I hope you can even tell what it is (I hate this camera)
