is this the wrong hinge?

i tried hanging the front door on my arcade. i have hinges that look like this from home depot



the problem is, when the door is mounted, it opens half way and then it binds on it self stopping it from fully opening.


also i want to add my door is recessed into the cabinet 3/4"   meaning its not flush with the edges of the cabinet.

is this the wrong hinge?

if so is there anyway around it?

if not which hinge do i need ?

You need to leave about 1/16" space on the sides of the door, I think, in order to allow it to fully swing open.  Try beveling the interior edge too... THIS is what I did...

I think those are the same hinges I used on my cabinet and I couldn't get it to work right (I only opened halfway). It all depends on the way your door is hung. I think that javeryh used the correct hinges for my cab. They work properly because they are recessed.

Do some googling on (kitchen) cabinet hinges to learn how they work and which to get.

BTW, I removed some material and beveled the edge too. It didn't matter alot since the hinges were still incorrect. But if you get it working, please post some pics.

Looking at the picture it doesn't look like the door is lined up with the edge of the frame.  It's set off to the side the width of the wood. 

Is that how you mounted it?  I'm guessing that is how the hinge is build so you wouldn't have much a choice, but thought I would ask .  If that how yours is setup, it could be the hinge is designed for 1/2" wood and you are using 3/4" or something to that effect.

Yeah... that's why I left it the way it was since it worked well enough anyway (I only need to get in that door occasionally, and otherwise I have full access from the back).

Maybe the hinge is right but the installation is incorrect. That's why I'd like to hear how you eventually resolve it -- so I can copy you!

Make sure you get the type of European hinge that is designed for the door to be inset. Look here for some more info and you should be able to pick the type that will work for you.

Looks great! I see you had to use an extra strip of MDF to mount to. I'll remount my door the same way but I have a couple of questions first:

1) Where'd you get the hinge? Every time I'm in home depot I get all confused looking at a dozen hinges. Does it have a model number or something?

2) Did you have to route a recess on the door side? It looks flush.

3) how much space did you leave between the door and sidewall (the gap) on the hinge side.

4) The mounting strip is 3/4 thick"?

5) What's that white bracket for?

2) yes the door has to be routed out a bit for the hinge

3) the hinges come with a template which you use to line up exactly where the hinges need to be.

4) yes 3/4 i just added it so the hinges sit exactly flush with the door.

5) the bracket is used to hold up the sidewalls of my arcade.. a bit of overkill but i had them lying around so why not.

Thank you guys. I think I initially avoided that particular hinge because it required routing and I didn't think routing was necessarily necessary (if that makes any sense).

You'll probably be better off. I used cleats - mostly 1". There are no diagonal structures. As a result, the cabinet can rack slightly to the left or right while playing it. I play with a light touch so it's not generally a big deal, but for some arcade games and some players, more rigidity would be much better.

go to home depot and pickup the brackets with your hinges u can always add the brackets to make ur walls stronger

It's funny, I bought the same hinge, and have the same problem... the clue is the cabinet door is recessed in... so is mine.  I broke two of these hinges trying to get the door open.  I decided that not having the door open fully would be fine for me.  I also removed the springs (the little silver bullet thing) which helped getting the door open about 75 degrees.  These hinges are meant to be on the edge, so I would do like clickhea has, and put a board down the side on the inside where the hinges go to make it more like what it is supposed to open like.
