Make a mame video recording
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:35:30 pm »
I searched for this but couldnt find it. If it has already been discussed, a pointer to the thread would be greatly appreciated.
I see that mala can play a video clip of the game selected.
How is this done?
Do I need to download video clips from somewhere, or can mame make them?

Hello DaOld Man.  There are a couple pieces needed here to get you up and going.  I am sure others will join in here but to gt tyou started here is what I think you should do.

1.  Visit the BYOAC Wiki facts concerning how Mala interops with the game video previews.  You can get to the wiki site by going to the following:
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Main_Page

2.  You will need to get yourself familiar with the mala layout config utility.  Remember, all video will have precedence over any text or image.  These settings are self explainitory in the Mala layout utility.

3.  Visit the Mala homepage and preview some of the online documentation located here:  http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/help.html

4.  I would start by selecting a layout that has already been created for you.  You can then manipulate the layout to your liking.

5.  Once you have your layout configured the way you like, you will have to specify your video preview directory in the mala front end.

6.  To obtain the video previews and the static images, Circo has done a very nice job getting all these together for everyone.  This still is a work in progress so all the images and video's are not there.  I have faith in Circo and if he has taken the time to get this far in his project, they will be complete before he is done.

Well, that's about all I can suggest at the moment.  You can browse and perform a search in this forum for Mala layouts and will find a handful of nice thought out layouts.  That is what I have done and manipulated the layout to my liking with the emalators that I plan on using with the layout.

Thanks, Shane

The default is holding "Left Shift" and "F12" at the same time during game play or whenever.  It'll dump a file into your Mame folder... at that point is where I'm in the same boat as you because it's not an .AVI file that MameUI creates, I forget offhand (I'm at work or I could give you the extension) but I wasn't able to get it to work with Mala... granted, I'm having super issues with codecs on my other computer so who knows.

Does anyone know what to do with the files that MameUI creates, as far as conversion?

You can find Circo's movies here, and a forum thread about them here (there are others as well - search for emumovies). They can be found via bittorrent, or FTP access if you make a modest $20 donation.

If you don't mind my extra two cents... I was going to try to do them all on my own or scrape them together through different websites, etc., but the way they were encoded would vary drastically and it was becoming a big pain in the butt... last night I finally donated to Emumovies, $20, and now have lifetime FTP access.  Truuuuuuuust me, it's a LOT easier than hunting for the files and torrents and whatever else I was doing... plus, the quality is great.  Here's the link to that:

http://emumovies.com/donations.html

When you do $20, you'll get an email back with your account/FTP info and then you can download from there!!  It saved me a migraine, haha.  Best $20 I've spent in a while.

I just ordered the DVD set, it was $30 + $5 shipping.
I get the FTP access included in this price.
I thought it was a good deal.
Do I need any special software to play the movie clips?

All you need to do is install the xvid codec.

Ha ha..
No I havent given up on Glaunch yet, just thought I would try something new for my next project.
im still working on a couple of projects for Glaunch.
One is called Glaunch manager, allows you to better maintain the emulator lists.
The other is called rotglaunch., (name change is pending): this program will start Glaunch in horz or vert mode, based on the position of your rotatable monitor.

Interesting.  :o

One question can is it possible to run programs before launching an emulator using glaunch?

Im not sure I understand your question, but this program will run instead of glaunch. Once the program has setup Glaunch for proper rotation, it starts Glaunch.
I am also implementing this idea in my "the launcher", which should work with just about any 'rotatable on start up' front end. (already tested with Glaunch and mala.)
I am also building into the launcher a function that when you exit to turn off the machine, it will kill the monitor so that all the windows shut down crap is not displayed.
This will require a relay connected to a pin on the printer port. The relay breaks the power going to the monitor.

If you are asking if it is possible to rotate the monitor (using a motor setup), before running a game in glaunch, i'm working on that too.

i downloaded circo's movies the other day, mala plays them just fine...however they seem to cause everything to be slow.  selecting games, bringing up the mala menu..everything is just sluggish when video previews are running.  so even though i spent the best part of 2 days downloading that pack of videos (torrents suck), i am not going to use them anyway because of the diminished performance. maybe it is just MALA, i don't know..but i have yet to find a front end that works as well as mala and is as easy to configure.

Hmm... yours chugs now?  I just got my movies last night and Mala runs just as fast as it did with still pictures... I actually still have the video stacked on top of the stills, both changing at the same time, and it runs fine.  I'm not good enough yet to offer suggestions though... but hopefully there's some setting that can be messed with to get your speed back.
