Spinner Problem - Left Only
« on: February 24, 2008, 07:32:46 pm »
I'm having an intermittent problem with my spinner (Oscar) and Optipac.  For some reason, the cursor (in Windows) only turns left.  Turning it left makes the mouse scroll left, but turning it right also makes the mouse scroll left (though not as smoothly).  I've had the problem before and it cleared up by itself but its acting up again.  I'd like to know what causes it and how I can fix it.

Thanks

I had a similar experience using a mouse hack to hook my spinner electronics to a mouse. I got some input in this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76635.0, but I got the impression that it would go away once I get a real encoder. I'm very interested in what you discover and how you solve your problem.

Could be a bunch of things.  The encoder PCB on the spinner could have a faulty sensor.  You could have a loose connection.

How fast are you spinning it?  Could be backspin perhaps?

My Oscar Spinner using an Opti-Pac is doing the same thing and has been for a long while now..  I can't even recall the last time I was able to use my spinner on anything.  I was thinking about replacing the encoder on the spinner, but don't know where to get one now that Oscar is gone. :(

Its not backspin - it happens no matter how slow it is spun.  Its jut weir because it was working 3 hours ago.  I am guessing a wire is crossed but I was hoping that I could find out exactly where to look.  Apparently it could be anything.

Thanks

I don't mean to dig up an old thread but this is the same problem I'm having.

Optipac, Windows XP.

I'm having the same problem with a trackball.  Player one trackball does this exact thing.  No Y movement only left X movement.  Trackball 2 works great.  I also have two spinners and two optical rotary joys hooked up.

Both spinners work great (Player 1 and 2 Y) but NEITHER of the rotary joys work (Player 1 and 2 X).

All equipment is brand new and never been used (but did sit in the garage for a couple of months in wrap).

I was wondering if you ever figured out what the problem was or if anyone else has any solutions?

***************UPDATE*******************
Trackball issue fixed.  +5V wire had slipped out from the power block.

Optical rotary issue was I had gotten the WRONG pinout from some thread but found the correct one.  Unfortunately this had GND and +5V swapped!  I fixed the wiring but now the rotarys only move the cursor left.  Am I screwed?  Will swapping the GND and power kill the optical board on the Happ rotary joys? If so where can I order replacement optical boards for the optical rotary joysticks?
