Sneak Preview: New Trackball from Ultimarc
« on: February 02, 2008, 06:12:51 am »
Lets face it, nobody likes trackball mounting plates! Nor the effort in crafting a panel which does not need one, with a conventional trackball. Well soon they will be banished to history!

A few weeks away yet as this it the production prototype. These will be available with white solid, and red and neutral translucent balls. Either for connection to Opti-PAC/Mini-PAC or with a new USB 2.0 interface.
We own full tooling and production of these units so expect the price to be very competitive also.
Been so busy developing new stuff that we don't have a name for this yet. Any suggestions welcome! Any winner whose suggestion is adopted can choose $100 worth of stuff from our store.

Good idea.

What's the size of the ball?

I'd call it High-Ball  or Tall-Ball :P

I think this is a great idea. I already have a trackball I plan to use on my project coming this spring, but if the price is right I may shelf it and use one of these.
As far as a name, Im not too good with things like that, but "Stealth Track" comes to mind...

Neat Idea Andy..... At first I thought you'd just had a new top injection molded to fit the betson, but then I realised that you'd have to make the mechanics of it fit higer in the bottom case as well.... Very good!  Not sure how the encoder wheels fit unless they are somehow geared from the rollers. Do they still spin well with the additional friction??

Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

name Easy Mount is not correct. He does not require mountplante only, but still requires screwing. Screwing - negation Easy Mount

easy mount is top mount. This Trackball has the same assembly how korean joysticks. Korean joysticks are not type easy mount. Easy mount:
 iL -Universal Stick
Turobo Twist spiner
Bao Lian Easy Mount

RTM trackball (Ready to Mount)

in MDF you still need mountplante:P - edges of hole
this will make easy in panels from metal and lexan or very hard wood

in MDF you still need mountplante/bezel, how near lock:P

Clearly it is for easy mounting into a wood CP. A couple of counter sunk bolts and your away! Not everybody has access to router, workshop, etc. Some of us are stuck with just a jigsaw and sandpaper :(. I still say "EZ-M" it looks damn issue to install in a panel to me ;)

Is this thing the size of a button?   If it is, then how about the Ultraroll mini.  Or Ultrarolltrak.

I hope it is small though.  This could bypass the hurdle of playing dual spinner games, and having easy mounting.

I think someone mentioned it already, but I'll detail it again. What would seal the deal for me on this is if the trackball had some sort of flange for the top of the panel. For instance, you could rough cut a hole for it and not worry about being an absolute perfect circle as it requires now. Then you mount the trackball, and from the top screw down a flange type connection like what is on a push button housing. This covers any errors in the cutout, and would give the TB an ultra smooth and pretty tie in to the CP.

As to name, I prefer Ultimarc E-Z Mount Trackball. Simple, and to the point.

That name is way too long.

Maybe Ult-iBall ?

Anyway, wouldn't a flange like that hurt your hands ? Or at least hinder your playing ?

If the lip of the trackball and the flange where threaded you could even use it as part of the fastening of the trackball.

Ultimarc Clean-mount?

Ultimarc EZ mount

Ultimarc Supermount?

Ultimount?

Those would be my guesses.

Nice work!

It appears to me that you could probably just use a hole-saw and a few counter-sunk screws and be set.  Looks cool to me!

OK here is the optional flange...
Its a 3 inch trackball by the way, rather larger than a button! The appearance when mounted is exactly the same as the Happ from the top of the panel (without the mounting plate!).

There is no gearing. The wheels just fit. It was a very careful piece of CAD followed by laser prototyping. The mechanics are fairly conventional although I searched for the best bearings which are not pre-packed with thick grease and also specified precision-ground stainless steel rollers.
I was also able to maintain the distance between the points where the rollers contact the ball.. just. This avoids the ball jumping off the rollers, something which was noticeable in an early design which pushed the rollers inwards.

Some good name suggestions here! Keep them coming. I already have a couple on here earmarked! The final decision will be made by a specially-convened committee... ok some mates down the pub...

Fitting in with the theme of the UltraStik 360, which is also known by its abbreviations as the UltraStik or U360 ...

How about ...

UltraTrak 720

... which could also be known by the following abbreviations :

UltraTrak,  U720

How about just a simple "TrackMark".  Nothing to complex about that name, but it does show that it is original to the ultimarc business.

BTW, the SpinTrak that I ordered from you arrived the other day.  It's AWESOME!  My cabinet is far from complete (as I decided to re-start my CP build from scratch after a few screw ups), but I spent all of last night playing Arkanoid on my laptop with the spinner.  So much more fun now!
