Any good Vertical Football games?
« on: January 31, 2008, 08:17:34 am »
I am bringing my Vertical MAME cabinet to work for a Super Bowl party and I want to put some football games on it to go with the theme of the party.

Does anyone know any good football games that are vertically oriented?

here's the obviously football titles that I was able to pull out using romlister.

Quarterback
Quarterback (set 2)
John Elway's Team Quarterback
John Elway's Team Quarterback (set 2)
All American Football (rev E)
All American Football (rev D, 2 Players)
All American Football (rev C)
All American Football (rev B)
TouchDown Fever
TouchDown Fever (Japan)
TouchDown Fever 2

there were 140+ matches of sports+vertical games, and some of the titles were rather obtuse, so I may have missed one or two.

I'm not much of a football fan, but I've always liked 10 Yard Fight.

edit: Oops, I was thinking 10 Yard Fight was vertical, but it's horiztonal.
It just scrolls vertically.

I was just getting ready to check that one out to verify orientation. I LOVE 10 yard fight. I played the hell out of it on nintendo.

10 Yard Fight was THE football game until Tecmo Bowl.

Quarterback
John Elway's Team Quarterback
All American Football (rev E)
TouchDown Fever
TouchDown Fever 2

Note these games used special controllers.  The first three (and clones) used a "SpringStick" aka a "football kicker stick"; an analog joystick that sprung all the way up to control strength of passes and kicks.  The later two (and clone) used optical rotary joysticks (to control direction of pass & kick, I guess).  So game play might not be as good as original (depending on you CP).

If you want to go old school, check out Atari Football (X's and O's).  This actually was a vertical cocktail with two trackballs (4 for the 4player version), and there is no AI; both players have to be manned, and it's best played with trackballs.  You'll have to remap player 2 upside down to work on your upright, too.  Maybe not right, but maybe worth a look.

If you want to screw with some people, Tehkan World Cup is a good game (but "soccer" to us americans). ;D

Atari Football uses a special controller too - if you aren't careful it will eat your hand.  One of only a few games with a carnivorous controller.

All trackballs can bite fingers.  Replace the rollers.  Worn rollers results in a bigger gap between ball and lip, resulting in more bitten fingers.

AF did use 4.5" TBs, which are bigger and heavier than 3" or 2 1/4", so they can eat more with a stronger bite.  Maybe a finger, but I don't know about a whole hand. ;)

Wasn't there some sort of super violent football game akin to Arch Rivals, where you had a team of like Vikings or Zombies? I think that was vertical, but I can't remember the name of it.

Sounds like Pigskin 621 A.D.

Yep...its fun...but I think it is horizontal. Additionally, I think it is best played with a 49-way, though I could be very wrong on this.

It was a stand-up cocktail, not a typical sit down.

How does one drink cocktails on a stand up cab?  :D

You're absolutely correct. I could have sworn that I played one that was like it though it scrolled vertically. Heck, I think it took the place of Pigskin 621 AD at my local arcade.

Its as heavy as a kitchen table too. I just moved one a few days ago. Dam those trackballs are big. First thing I plan to do is rebuild those jokers.

Well, if you don't mind playing football with robots, Cyberball 2072 is vertical.  I think it's pretty fun.

The original cyberball is really fun too. It's horizontal, but works great in my vertical cab. Just be sure to go into the video options menu and switch the mode from split screen if you plan on having 1 player at a time. Otherwise it squeezes 2 screens onto your vertical monitor, which is OK (I played it for a while like this), but not exactly ideal.
