Turbo LED Scoreboard
« on: May 17, 2003, 03:16:50 am »
I have a spare LED scoreboard from a Sega Turbo. I am just wondering if there is anyway to hook it up to the computer to make it do fancy stuff with Mame (or maybe show the scores on Dragon's Lair or something)?

It has 6 lines. Five that would show the top five scores and a sixth that shows the current score.

Don't have it with me, but I seem to remember a simple circuit board that hooked up with a connector that looked like a hard drive connector. I will have to look at it closer when I get home. I got my box of Turbo parts and the only one I really looked at was the control panel.

You mail it to me, and I'll try to work some magic. You could probably work some parallel port magic.

Ok. It hooks up via a 50 pin ribbon connector (2 rows of 25 on a single connector, like a hard drive connector, but a bit longer).

There are no ICs, capacitors, resistors or anything on the board at all. Just 5 rows of 5 small single LED numbers, and a large row of 5 single led numbers.

They appear to be wired in a matrix where each pin from the 50 pin connector leads to many individual pins on the LED numbers.

Each led number has ten pins, which I believe stands for the 10 numbers each one is capable of displaying, with no power meaning off (my guess at least).

More information.

The 5 large LED numbers are Toshiba part #TLR306 1J (with a D- above that).

The 25 small LED numbers are all part # TR353 1L (with a C above that).

The entire assembly is Sega part number 834-0116 or 171-0060 (depending on which side of the board you believe).
