Do the tokens work in normal quarter coin slots?

Maybe I'm blind, but I couldn't find anything saying whether or not I can use the byoac tokens in my stock centipede coin slots that currently take quarters. Do you have to have special token coin slots?

I never tried a token but A real coin mech. is designed to take real money and reject fake coins.  I think you would need a token mech. for it to work.

I could be wrong though.

you can definitely put a token in a coin slot...
the coin mechanism though needs to be appropriately used for tokens though in order for the token to not be rejected...

using tokens...?
use the appropriate token mechanism...

using quarters...?
use a quarter coin mechanism...

Thanks guys. I thought perhaps these tokens were weighted to match a quarter. Oh well.

That would probably be illegal. People could then use tokens in any coin-operated machine, e.g. the soda machine at work, or the washing machines at the laundromat.

Tokens would not respond the same to the magnet in the coin mechanism due to the different metallic properties between the two coins either.

Actually, I'm no expert, but I have been researching this exact thing, and from what i've learned, almost every single coin mechanism out there can be configured to accept either. It's just a matter of figuring out how yours switches between the two. Some have a simple switch on the back, some actually have a spot to place an example coin, and i'm sure there are other ways. See if you can obtain the original documenation for the coin mechanisms or the game it originally came in for specifics. Or just poke around on the coin mechanisms for a switch.

On a similar note I own the Happ 40-0008-00 http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/40000800.htm which accepts and registers quarters fine - I was wondering if there is a way to adjust this to accept the MAME/BYOAC tokens as I just bought some and can't figure out what I need to adjust.  The mechs shown in this forum and on arcadereplay don't match this one.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I'm a newbie, but here's my take from what I understand. Technically, if the door has a slot for the type of coin to accept it is a comparitor.

You would have to adjust the entry slot restrictor to accept the new thickness (if it has changed). Reconfigure the cradle to accept a different weight coin via the counterweight. Calibrate the magnet to the new magnetic properties of the token. If the token is not magnetic, then the magnet will not slow the coin enough to let it fall into the accept chute. If it is magnetic, then the magnet will need to be repositioned closer/further via a setscrew. It seems like an awful lot of work when you can grab an inexpensive token mech. Of course, you could just bypass the mech and send the coin straight to the microswitch if you want the coin door to accept anything. Hopefully somebody that knows exactly what they're talking about can chime in. I've been known to talk out of my arse from time to time.  :blah:

Thanks for the detailed explanation - you know much more than this newbie ;)  I think I will stick to quarters for the meanwhile.

Thanks all! I will definitely investigate. Those BYOAC tokens are cool, even if a tad pricey (but then again, I have $20 tied up in quarters for my cab right now!).

Thanks Santoro,

I checked this out but my mechanism doesn't have the plastic screw illustrated.  I will continue to research and if I find anything will post here.

Not all coin mechs are "moddable". The coin controls mechs are fairly easily modded for byoac tokens, but it can be finicky. For instance, your machine has to be pretty close to level, or the coins will jump the bottom diverter. The really neat thing about this mod is that you can still use quarters too. Most plastic ones are factory calibrated, and have no way to adjust.

I don't think my coin mech is moddable - the Happ 40-0008-00, however I may buy a different mechanism in the future.  Thanks again for all the advice on this thread!
