« on: January 03, 2008, 08:27:03 pm »
Does anyone know if any of the current light guns work with Vista x64?

Thanks Everyone

Well, I wouldn't touch Win Vista.  I  don't see why a light-gun wouldn't work; it is basicly a mouse , right?

DOH!!   No!!  Not a wireless mouse at all......  :laugh2:

There are no drivers for Vista for the LCD Topgun right now. Vista is also so full of bugs at the moment, that it's not worth even thinking about. On top of that, MAME isn't optimised for Vista so at the moment it runs worse than a very slow thing on a slow day.

Just take a minute to think and chill.  If you don't have a lighgun, you move the mouse and click to fire.  The lightgun is for the same purpose.  I don't know why I put wireless in there.

Actually, that's not entirely true.  Vista 64 bit generally offers the best MAME performance under Windows OS's.

OK But there are still driver issues..... Not to mention the constant crashing and lockups of Vista itself. Until somebody writes some drivers for the Topgun and Guncon which actually work on there and Microsoft get to somewhere like second service pack on vista, it's a non starter. So I'd guess at least 12 to 24 months before it's even worth thinking about.

OK, let's cut the FUD. If you're going to beat up on Vista, then attack it for the things that are actually wrong with it (application compatibility issues, confusing interface changes, poor performance on low and mid-range machines), rather than for imagined "constant crashing and lockups". I don't see a lot of evidence for the latter, and it certainly is very far from my experience.

In general, if you use modern hardware, the drivers are there and work fine. If you use older hardware, you may or may not have luck with compatible drivers, though most XP drivers will work fine if you are still using 32-bit Vista. Once you move to 64-bit, you absolutely should have modern hardware (within the last year or so) if you don't like to struggle with finding drivers.

Given that the LCD Top Guns pre-date Vista, my suspicion is that the XP drivers work ok on 32-bit Vista, and that there are no 64-bit drivers, since many manufacturers didn't bother (and smaller ones still don't).

I run Vista Home Premium on my ASUS F3SC laptop and it runs MAME just fine.  Actually I'm thinking of ditching Tiny XP for another license of Vista Premium for my next cabinet.

Yes Vista can be a pain with "XP" compatible applications and games, but that is due to how Vista differs from XP for example system folder names. File transfers are slow and old DOS games suffer under emulation.  So what.

I have ran the latest games, Crysis, Orange Box, Bioshock with a better performance than XP.  Heck Vista is more secure web wise too which is a bonus if you hate rootkits being allowed to be installed by lackluster security software (several I can mention).  Vista locks them out (as far as I know)  ;).

My Topguns work fine in Vista, had them running off a DLP Projection TV which rocked even if we had to stand way back to get it to calibrate.

Actually I'm quite pleased with Vista, and I hope the Service Pack makes it even better.

So Fozzy please ensure you are talking the truth before you go posting  :censored: which makes me angry, as your previous comments in other threads are far more accurate and truthful.

And if the previous poster was THE AG - Thanks for everything so far and all the best for the new year!

I actually went with Vista to stay ahead of the game.  In the past few months, MAME has shown an improvement with 64bit CPU's and running CHD games that were previously thought to never be able to run.  I have a pretty good machine, with a 64bit cpu, and I decided to go with a 64bit OS.  As time goes on, this OS will become the standard.  Most systems already ship with it pre-installed.  And now with the 1st SP on the horizon, I'm looking to stay with the times.  With that said, I have all the drivers I need, including a VISTA 64 version I used vLite on.  Everythings running great, but as I start to look at purchasing a light gun, was just looking for some suggestions.

And as everyone remember, XP wasn't the greatest OS when it was first released...
