7 button layout conflicts with Neo Geo Layout
« on: January 03, 2008, 03:41:38 pm »
I received my i-pac 4 in the mail yesterday and I was playing around with my button layouts and then realized that I may have a conflict with NEO GEO games.

Currently the 7 button layout I want to have is exactly the same as pictured below.  Button # 1 is on the top and button # 7 is the extra one on the bottom.  This layout is a must since I play Mortal Kombat 3 very often.

However, this 7 button layout does not work well with NEO GEO games.  I would like the A button to be # 7, B button to be #4, C button to be # 5 and D button to be # 6 to conform to the standard NEO GEO layout.

I don't want to have to change EVERY SINGLE Neo Geo game config by using Tab in MAME.  Is there an easier way to do this in an .ini file somewhere?

I've thought about using a standalone Neo Geo emu which would solve my problem, but I really would prefer if it runs in MAME.

Thoughts?

Well, on my TEST CP, I have my buttons reversed (according to your picture)

On the bottom rom I have #1, #2, #3

Then on the top row #4, #5, #6

I plan to add a seventh button for the Neo Geo layout.

I did mine slightly different, the #7 button is beside my start button, sorta like a select/start combo.  I use 1,2,3,and 4 for neo-geo games, and it feels comfy using the thumb to hit button 4.

I would like the bottom 4 buttons to match the Neo Geo layout because that's how the directions on each game displays it when playing.

I don't see what the problem is. Go into the MAME menu and define the controls for ALL games rather than for an individual game.
NO MORE!!

But that would blow away the original 7 button layout which I want for all other games.  I just want the bottom 4 for Neo Geo games.

Couldn't you set the neo-geo friendly layout to ALL GAMES and then set mortal kombat up differently? Or would that throw everything off?

I considered that, but yes, it would throw all the games off.  For example, all games would have the #7 button as button # 1.

There is a solution I just read it, but I can't find it at the moment.
It went something like this. This may not be accurate as it's from memory

Open and run a single neo geo game
remap your controls to your preference
then copy that cfg file to the neo geo bios or system file I can't remember everything but that was the basic concept.
Then the remap is only active for neo geo games

You can do it the answer is here somewhere.
If I find it I post the link
