GGG LED lights mounted on silver shelf paper (fire hazard?)
« on: December 21, 2007, 01:13:03 pm »
I got my LED lights to shine using the LEDWiz board but I was unhappy with how I positioned them so they did not cast the light how I would want it.

To rectify this, I was thinking of taking some wood and covering it with some self sticking silver (ie: mirror-like) shelf paper and then mounting my LED lights on the wood in front of the silver shelf paper.   The LED light bulb and little metal wires from the LED will most likel;y touch part of the shelf paper.    I was wondering whether this would be a fire hazard or whether it is ok to mount the LED lights like this.

I am mounting my LED lights with the silver shelf paper background so the light from the LEDs hopefully will shine more light in more directions.

Please let me know whether it is safe to do this .......

just paint the wood white, mirror paper would probably be less reflective than white paint, if its painted then no possible fire hazard either

LEDs give off very little - if any - heat, this should not be an issue.  Just be sure that if the shelf paper is metallic it doesn't short anything out .

The LED light bulb and little metal wires from the LED will most likely touch part of the shelf paper.

If the shelf paper is metallic or conducts in any way, this would likely short out the wires. At the voltages we're talking about, it's not a major fire hazard, but it's not something you want to be doing.

Like someone mentioned, true white paint would likely be a better choice.

for informations sake, foil/mirror has a black backgrond and absorbs more than reflects, white paint is the way.

in my experience, people who have special gardens in their attics know, they buy special white foil. i am not one of these people should the local law enforcement be reading.

Ok, I returned the silver shelf paper and found this peg board stuff which has white laminate-type stuff on one side and has the typical brown material stuff on the other (see pictures).   This is normal pegBoard stuff which you hang in your garage to hold tools and such ... just one side is white.

After I cut it I was wondering whether having the wires from the LED light touching the brown material is going to be a fire hazard.    I planned on having the wires coming from the LED lights be on the brown side and then push the LED light (and two metal wires from the LED light) through the hole and tape it down on the white side.

Do you see any problem with me pushing an LED through the hole and having the possibility of the LED light wires touching the brown side?

have you considered putting heatshrink on the led legs, they could short whatever you mount them on.

Thank you ..... yes that would solve the problem.     I just tested out the pegboard wire mounting and the white side makes everything shine very nicely when mounted.   Heat shrink tubing should solve all my concerns ......  thanks again

Just wired up a couple of panels using heat shrink tubing ...... it feels real safe to me know .... thanks again.

Pictures??

Also, about the pegboard: there would only be a problem if the pegboard is electrically conductive. Put your ohmmeter test leads on the brown side, see if it has a low resistance, if resistance is very high, it should be safe to let the wires touch it.
I think most peg boards are made out of a cardboard like material (I may be wrong though). It probably wont conduct electricity (when it is dry), unless you are pumping a thousand or so volts to it.
If you are worried about the heat from the leds, turn one on for about five minutes, then touch it, I bet you wont feel much heat at all.

Yeah, they do not give off much heat at all.   With the heat shrink tubing applied, I have no more worries......

I will just provide a bunch of pictures of everything when the cabinet is completed.    :)
