Leaf switch lamps? Plus 2 player CP advice please
« on: December 01, 2007, 10:44:23 am »
Hi there! Long time since I was last on these boards. But I return because the cabinet I made three years ago I have now sold. I had to sell for space reasons due to a house move.  :hissy:

Anyway... I have decided to build a standard two player control panel just for use with Mame running on a standard PC and monitor. Basically 2x joysticks with 7 buttons each, Happs 3" trackball and spinner. Nothing out of the ordinary. However, I do want this panel to be as all encompassing with as many Mame games as is possible with this spec.

So I've been thinking of running all my buttons, trackball and spinner through a Minipac. And then using 2x 360 joysticks which plug straight to USB ports on my PC. Is this a viable setup? And can I use this with Mame32? Or must I use a frontend with Mame to be able to configure the games? I'm not too bothered about a separate front end like I was when making the cabinet project. But if I have to then so be it.

The other point is that the buttons must be leaf switches. I don't like the "clickiness" of micro switches. Just my personal preference. I've been looking at WICO for these translucent buttons/switches:

The button holder has an integral "lamp mounting" according to the blurb. But what lamp would fit here? I would like to use the Ultimarc Pac-Drive to illuminate the lamps but not sure if this would be possible. All dependent on the lamps used I suppose.  :dunno

Wico is out of business, get your leaf buttons from Bob Roberts:

The holder is meant for a wedge base holder and incandescent bulb, which looks poor in my opinion.   You cannot power incandescent bulbs from the minipac, they draw too much current.
You could replace the incandescent bulb with an LED version but that would not look good either.

If you want to light the buttons nicely there are some good home brew examples people have done here, or I have a product available just for such a thing:

You can light LEDs from the 5v provided through the minipac by the USB port but there is a limit.  A USB port will provide 500 mA and a typical LED will draw 20mA.  With the amount of buttons you have that would be over the limit.

I didn't know WICO  had gone bust.  Seems I been out of the loop for too long, what with the new products and news I've not heard about. I didn't know about the U360s or MaLa for example. Got some catching up to do.

I may not bother lighting the buttons. But if I do I will certainly consider your option. I kinda know exactly how I want my CP to perform. But the extra bells and whistles of lights and graphics overlays etc. I may have to leave out.

I sold my Mame project cabinet for £825 and I've already calculated that the full cost of the parts for my fully "perfect" two player control panel would be just about half that. So I may need to compromise on some things.  :dizzy:
