Control Panel and Monitor Height Question
« on: October 04, 2007, 09:49:38 pm »
I finally finished building my two person control panel and came up with a question.  At what height should the control panel be.  I mean to the top of the control panel itself or where the joysticks are.  Also what height is the monitor supposed to be that is standard?   Was just getting ready to mount the control panel and wanted to make sure i had it at a standard height.

There is really no standard height.  I have mine 40" to the base of the joysticks, but it would be more comfortable at 46".  This of course would be just for me at 6'6".  What height are you looking at getting it at currently?

Is everyone in your family short?  Do you have alot of kids?  There is also something called stools, evens the height for anyone.

Did you already find Akuma's ergonomics thread (with links to others)?  This PDF has a great image for monitor height and angle.   In case the link gets broken, the details I thought were interesting were:
1. the top of the screen about an inch below eye level
2. the screen is around  12°- 18° from vertical.

More pepper for this pot:
My joystick bases are a few inches below my elbow height, which is fairly comfortable.
My monitor shelf angle is adjustable from ~15° to fully horizontal.  The full vertical screen position was for watching shows from the couch, but I never do that so it is always at ~15°.  Angle adjustment is a fairly easy feature to implement, though.
My monitor is about 6 inches below eye-level.  This gives me a tendency to lower my overall height during intense Robotron sessions by standing with my feet further apart.  This stance puts me close to eye level with the top of the screen.  (I didn't really think about this stuff so technically when I built my cabinet)

It is good advice to play sessions of your most often played games at various heights to really determine what is most comfortable for your Player(s.)

I've been reading the posts in the BYOAC message board for about one year now but I am fairly new to the cab construction myself. As a newbie, I can really recommend, that you do some sort of playtesting to find the ideal height of your cp and monitor. Play for some  time and pay attention if anything grows painful or uncomfortable. Also, test both - playing while standing and sitting to find the best compromise.
