*MARKRVP WINS* NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em 2007
« on: August 31, 2007, 12:32:46 pm »
I have run this the last two years and it went pretty well.  Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong, you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post.

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread, so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

Man, there are no sure picks this week. All the games are pretty good match ups.

There are definitely no easy picks - to many question marks on pretty much every team. Having said that, if I go out in the first week I'm going out supporting my team.

Green Bay over Philadelphia at lambeau.

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

You're not eliminated yet since there are more games in Week 1.  You cannot pick this game, though, as you didn't meet its deadline.

figures I pick a team that wins.... and wins 41-10. This game was the only one this week I had an confidence in picking.

Try number 2,I flipped a coin and got heads, so Arizona over San Fransisco.

So long Tommy, and thanks for all the laughs!  :laugh2:

What's funny about the Giants is that there are a ton of quality QB's out there and they get a 300 lb dude from Kentucky to be their backup. :laugh2:

And oh DAMN our game moderator is outski in week 1...... :o

Yeah, that ain't right.  Obviously the game still runs, though.  I'll update the thread when I have more time around lunch today.

Ever seen that 300lb dude throw in practice?  He looks like he could put a football through a bank vault door.

I watched him when he played for Kentucky fairly regularly. He can only operate out of the gun. Being that he is bigger than the dudes that tried to tackle him on that run, he should have went head first and plowed them over for the first down. Instead he did a crappy slide.

Being that if he gets injured they're down to a third string QB (if they even have one), sliding is the intelligent thing to do.  It's more important to keep a bit conservative when you're almost out of bullets than it is to keep shooting for every possible inch of field position.

Here's a new suggestion:

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.

To be more accurate, you can't use either game that involves a team from your preceding game.  You can't even pick one of those teams to lose.

It's not trolling when your right, unfortunately markrvp beat me to the tommy taunt.

I'll hold off on ridiculing everyone’s wrong picks until after I'm the last man standing. This way you can all enjoy my belittling equally.

I didn't see the highlight your pick post until now, and I didn't want to mess with the new post positioning, so instead of modifying it,  I'm reposting my pick.

Once the match up is picked, move on to another team or match up.

This is a GAME. True problems lie out in the real world. I've got better things to do than worry about the implications of the BYOAC pick em contest. If everyone keeps picking the favorites, the law of averages suggests that eventually they will be wrong. Or are you predicting Indy to go undefeated this season?  ;D

That's how this game works, tommy.  Eventually, most people are out, and the ones that are left begin to make different choices.  We have a full 17 weeks to play and the playoffs if need be but rarely does one of these games go much beyond the halfway point.  Even if everyone picks the Colts every week, the Colts aren't going 18-0.

(the Colts will lose week 9  ;D)

No one will pick 18 games in a row.  If they could do that they'd be somewhere else playing a better game.

That's the way it goes sometimes in these games.  Some weeks there are easy picks, some weeks those "easy" picks end up as upsets.  But really, given Cleveland's current situation, can you blame folks for picking against them this week?

Edit:  I went back and looked, and I've picked Cincy over Cleveland in one of the first two weeks every Pick'em so far.  Man, I must really like that matchup.

I knew that was bound to be said, but that's not true, really, who cares about this byoac little contest. I just noticed all the same teams were being picked and mentioned it. Enough already.

See?

I feel really bad for you guys that picked Cincy over Cleveland.  Cleveland scoring 51 points is the world's largest fluke.  I picked Denver over Oakland because I thought there was no way Denver loses against the Raiders in Denver, but damn if they didn't try.  Luckily they pulled it out in overtime.

you can... watch the giants lose in miami next week, or try out for the team? I'd suggest trying to play defense for them, you cant give up 80 points in 2 weeks and expect to win. I wouldnt been out this week if I didnt get eliminated this week, I had the bengals over the browns on my GF's game like this at work, shes pissed at me lol, they have double elimination though

Holy cow, no kidding...after watching seattle literally deconstruct in their final - should have been winning - drive only to turn it over and setup AZ's winning field goal, I switched to the raiders / broncos game only to see an almost exact replay  :banghead:

I honestly can't BELIEVE the timeout call that nullified the good fieldgoal kick, to only have the kicker miss the next attempt and give the Broncos the ball back...

INCONCEIVABLE!

What did i do wrong exactly here? I pointed out that everyone was making the same old lame picks jumping on the bandwagon and that they should have some balls and actually pick a team that no one else picked, so now i'm being called a sore loser and cannot participate anylonger? I'd like to know what you guys are smoking so i can steer clear of that garbage.

Everyone is making the same easy picks. 3 guys picking the Colts every week is kinda lame. 3 Guys picking the Bengals over the Browns? Come on.

Once the match up is picked, move on to another team or match up.

This is not my party but it seems to be going kinda weak.

Two people picked the Colts so it must not have been that much of an easy one.  And they lost there last year.  And, oh yeah, three guys picking the Bengals is fine.  Unlike the candy ass teams in NY, everyone else has a chance to win every week.  Bucs over Saints, Texans winning at Panthers etc proves that any one can win at any time.

Start your own pool next year, or better yet, start a new one now with your rules.  Quit being a troll in this thread please.

The reason you can't participate any longer is because you failed at the objective of picking a team that could win an NFL game.

I AM a royal ---uvula---, you're not the first to point it out, but frankly, I'm not the one crying sour grapes about the game.  and "for the record" I haven't picked the Colts yet, and even if I did, this week was a wild one and they almost lost.....as did my pick, the broncos.

Consider this... only two people have picked the Patriots who are clearly the best team in the NFL after two games.  As good as the Colts have looked the Pats have been as good so far as any NFL team I've sever seen.

True, but NE at home seems unbeatable right now.  And Buffalo's offense is anemic so far.

Buffalo always plays the Pats tough.  So does Miami.  Most other teams roll right over but those two teams are never easy for the Pats.

Heh, the Packers are my team and all, but over the last 5 years or so I've gotten to the point where I don't think they can beat anyone with talent. I was shocked the other day when I saw that the spread was in favor of Green Bay. I guess those guys know what they are talking about. Oh and, Go Pack Go! ;D

Didn't quite work out so tough... but man, living right in the shadow of Gilette, this team is as bemusing as it is dominant.  Three weeks, three ---smurfy--- unnecessary filthy events.

Week 1 - Harrison suspended
Week 2 - illegal camera on sideline
Week 3 - Wilfork intentionally dives at Losman's knee and injures it

I mean, WTF... I'm sick of this crap.  That hit on Losman, and this is coming from a home fan, was way out of line.  Clearly intentional.  Dude went 3 yards out of his way and reached his arm forward to get to Losman's knee.

I think the over under for tonight is about 125.   Brady is on pace for 53 TD passes and has a rating of over 140 after three games.

Tom Brady is playing Tecmo Bowl with NFL defenses.

I'm a little confused on the rules.

Can I use one of the teams I've picked in week 3 for week 5?

I feel for the guys who lost with San Diego.  I'm in (was in) another contest and you can only pick a team once.  In that contest I was saving Indianapolis for a later game.

That rule only applies to consecutive weeks.  You're fine using a team in week 5 that you used in week 3.

You cannot pick a game that contains EITHER team from the previous weeks pick.

Yeah, that's the twist I threw in.  I didn't want it to be TOO hard but I didn't want someone to be able to, say, pick the Dolphins' opponent every week.

New England over Cleveland

At this point, I'd be a little scared to pick Cleveland either way. They could very easily bring that x-factor and be the team to knock off the Pats.

Rodney Harrison returns next week.  The Pats' defense is much stronger with him covering the middle and guiding the other DBs.

Cheating or not, those pats are impressive. The just have too many weapons one the field at any given moment. And its good to see Moss finally playing to his potential. It's sad, because he had the tools to be the best ever and own all of the records - instead he wasted a significant portion of his career.

The good part is that the whole Brady-Manning debate was always separated by two things - Brady's rings and Manning's weapons.  The big question was always "if Brady had Harrison/Wayne/Stokley/James what would he do?"  Well, Brady has a set of weapons that is almost as good now and he's killing the whole NFL.  The one thing he doesn't have is a reliable workhorse back.

Good man.  This is a tough week to pick - a lot of teams that could or could not play well.  And they are playing against other teams that could or could not play well.

I hate to pick against an 0-4 team, because you know they're due to win a game sooner or later.  The biggest slam dunk is the Cowboys over Buffalo, but I can't pick that one because I had the Cowboys last week.

I want to pick Green Bay over Chicago, but I just know Brett Favre has a 3-interception game in him just waiting to bust out.

Aaaaaaagh.  I'll pick at the end of the week after going over the injured list.

besides, the steelers defense is riddled with injuries from sunday alone...their cornerback is most likely out with a high ankle sprain leaving Deion Branch and Bobby Engram to run free....

I could go for the easy pick, but what the heck, its only a game, right?  ;D

besides, the steelers defense is riddled with injuries from sunday alone...their cornerback is most likely out with a high ankle sprain leaving Deion Branch and Bobby Engram to run free....

I could go for the easy pick, but what the heck, its only a game, right?  ;D

I'll give you a perfect example of a tough game to pick:

New York Giants vs. New York Jets

Both teams have the potential to suck, but NYG certainly has better chance to explode with Plaxico Burress (how do you cover a guy who looks 8' tall?)  However, that game could absolutely go either way.

There are several teams you would like to pick against, but they're all at home.  Arizona at St. Louis is like that.

Another example - Miami at Houston.  Common sense says Houston wins this one, but can Miami really lose 5 in a row?

Geez, this week is hard.  I'm pretty sure Indy is going to kick the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of Tampa Bay as a gift to Tony Dungy.  That may be the game I pick.

Plaxico could be considered to be better than R Moss.

Plaxico could be considered a bigger headcase than R Moss.

I fixed that for you. ;D

I wish I could find the vid of when Plax spiked the ball without being touched. That was funny as hell.

Week 1 - Harrison suspended
Week 2 - illegal camera on sideline
Week 3 - Wilfork intentionally dives at Losman's knee and injures it

Week 5 - 11 seconds left in a lopsided game, Mike Vrabel dives at an OL's knees for no particular reason on a clock spike, drives him all the way back to the QB.  Vrabel is the only player on the field that hits on that play.  Completely unnecessary cheap shot at the knees.

 :banghead:

For those keeping track, it didn't take very long for Rodney Harrison to rack up his first personal foul of 2007.  IIRC it was in the second quarter of his first game and he didn't even start.

The Colts can't stop the run again... the Jags are putting up their usual huge rushing numbers again... and the Jags have beaten the Colts more than anyone except the Pats over the last 4 seasons.

Of course, the Jags play them twice a year and the Pats only play them once unless they meet in the playoffs.  Either way, I think I see a Colts loss coming this weekend.

EDIT:

Quick note... Pats lost at Miami in 2006, 2004, and 2002... just as the Jags are the Colts' Achilles heel... Miami in Miami is the Pats'...

It appears noone was eliminated..although the Jets had no excuse for blowing it in the second half. I think that game made it glaringly obvious that Chad Pennington is the least of their worries.

This year is weird.  For the next two weeks, on all but one or two games, there is no clear favorite in each game.  It could go either way (like Detroit over Tampa Bay yesterday).  In two weeks, the Patriots play the Colts, so you can't even pick one of the two best teams.

I should probably just let these things happen, but:

Week 8

Darn you. I could have been eliminated. Now you force me no choice...nevermind - Miami isn't playing.

I'll take  Cleveland over Seattle for Week 9.

Damn I pick Cleveland and I still survive. That's okay, Miami is back next week and they are DUE. :laugh2: Seriously, don't be surprised when my official pick at the end of the week is Miami...and I don't even know (or care) who they are playing.

I'm telling you, Miami is due. It is a lock coming off a buy week. ;D

And anyways, I want to win in style. With the exception of my two Indy and NE picks, all of my picks have been "off the grid".

I was going to pick San Diego over Minnesota (had planned it two weeks ago), but since it was already picked I chose another game to make it interesting.  Thank God that happened.

Eh, both the Rams and Dolphins are on the road and it's a ---smurfette--- to play in Buffalo once it gets cold.  Plus the Bills are .500 now on a 3 game winning streak.

What I'd like to see is the Chargers stop letting Rivers kill them and start handing the ball to LT 35 times a game.  Starting this week.  Give the Colts 2 in a row.

Miami is at home Vs. Bills . Plus Buffalo doesn't even know who is starting at QB yet.

Dammit I even looked those games up to be sure... and still read the Miami game wrong.   :banghead:

Buffalo has had QB confusion all year but that doesn't change a 3 game win streak or 4-4... or how bad Miami really and truly sucks.

Thank you very much.  I honestly thought New Orleans was the safest pick this week.  It was a really tough week to pick.  I also thought Miami was going to pull it out, so a lot of good and bad luck all the way around this week.

Heh.  It hadn't occurred to me to put up a prize until half the people were eliminated... by then it didn't seem like it would be fair.

Next year we can put up a prize... or would that make the game too big?
