Building an NES Cabinet
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:39:41 pm »
Okay, I know that this could probably be considered a "project announcement", but since this is so far in advance of starting and I'm still not even sure if it will ever start, I didn't want to make another announcement only to have it die in the planning stages.

Basically, after seeing website about oversized NES and SNES controllers, I thought it would be cool to make an oversized classic NES console and run an emulator inside of it.  I have some room in my living room under the table that my TV, Cable Box, and DVD Player are on.  I could make the console about 12" high which would give me enough room for the computer inside.  The area where the cartridges would go could be used to store a wireless keyboard and mouse so that I can navigate through the computer when I need to and not be stuck right next to the console.

All of the conector sizes would be scaled up with the real size ones still able to fit inside of them.  (E.G. for the controllers the ports on the console would be pretty big, but in the middle of that big port there would be a normal sized controller connector.  The interior of the console would have th NES to USB adapter to hook up with the computer).

I went on e-bay and got a dead NES console for $10 so I'll be able to use that to make accurate measurements.  What do you think?
Donkey Kong High Scores:
1): 49,500
2): 35,600
3): 30,100
4): 29,400
5): 28,200

I think it's a neat ide but I could have sworn I saw a story not too long ago where someone put a pc running a NES emulator inside an actual (gutted) NES.  I'll be damned if I can find it though.  Maybe someone else knows where it was at.

At any rate, good luck with the project.

I remember that, used a mini ATX board and has the laptop DVD drive where the flap was.

Here's one that uses a mini-itx board and no dvd.

If I understand you correctly, you want to make a super sized Nintendo Controller and put a PC or real Nintendo inside it... NOT put a PC inside a NES chassis.

If so, this has been done once before. I couldn't find the original website with the writeup of how he did it, but here's a video of it in action:

Edit: Found the website

Nope.  I want to build an oversized NES Console with an NES emulator in it and have the ability to use it as storage, and a funky way to play NES on my TV.

2): 35,600
