Old adhesive on a metal CP

Hello,

I'm putting a new CPO (adhesive vinyl) on a metal CP.  I ripped the old CPO off, and it left most of its adhesive on the metal.  Should I take the time to remove the old adhesive (if so, how).  Or should I just stick the new CPO on the already sticky metal?

The metal is pretty much all covered with the sticky residue.

Thanks for any input!

That stuff is a ---smurfette--- to get off. I finally had to sand blast it off.

None of the removers that I tried really did anything.

Definitely remove it.  I used a metal grinder and it worked fine.  And then i painted it black so that anywhere that didn't get covered up wouldn't show threw.

Yeah, your new overlay wont stick worth a darn if you dont clean the CP up first.  I used WD40 and a scraper (like you use to get the inspection sticker out of your car window) and scraped it off, sanded it, scraped it and so on until it came clean.  It takes a little work but the results are nice!  I'm sure there are better solvents to use than WD40, but thats all I had readily available.  Heres a good example of the difference it makes:

Use an Automotive tar/grease remover.

It will strip that stuff off in no time.

Very little effort required.

Yeah, I used an automotive grease remover too.  Then I primed and painted it before installing the overlay.  It worked great.

Spray a little goo-gone and let it sit for a few, then wipe off.

I have the same one.. How do you fill in the holes left over.. mine has Nine button holes per side and some of the are overlaped. I only need 2 or 3 per side.

a dremel tool with wire brush

burn it with gas and sand it

try finger nail polish remover I used many cleaning products and nothing eats away goop like this stuff well maybe some thinner lol.

Just did a metal CP last week. I used gas a scraper and steel wool. If you let the gas soak in it scrapes off nicely. You may need to repeat the steps several times. Then when only little bit of adhesive left and the scraper is just smearing it around use the steel wool. You may want to finish it off with some hot soapy water, to get rid of the smell. In the end you have several ways to achieve the same results, but defiantly remove the left over adhesive before applying the new overlay. Good luck.

With the cost of gas these days, you might be better off having a metal company build a new one.  ;)

Also, I agree with spaces - use a automotive degreaser.

I am serious, Stobe don't stuff  about with a dremel or powertools.

Use that tar remover/degreaser like I said and watch the stuff drip off. There is nothing better, trust me.

Any remover with Xylene works best. You can buy pure Xylene at Home Depot as well.

I took mine to a metal shop, they baked it, ran it thru an abrader and it came out good bare and smooth as new, all for $15, check out the pics.
 
I had terrible luck with solvents and wasted a lot of time and money.

Pissed me off, I should have just paid someone to kick me in the balls!

steel wool and goo off 2 (name maybe off) but with the elbow greese it comes off.
