dkjr problem
« on: August 17, 2007, 09:56:14 pm »
well, i got my dkjr rom chip set today.  installed all the chips, and all i get is a screen full of garbage.  it doesn't coin up or do anything.  i have double checked all the chips, they are seated correctly with no bent pins.  could i have F-ed up the chips somehow?  i have worked with socketed chips before, i have even hot swapped a pc bios successfully.

any one have any ideas?  i will probably put the eight ball action chips back in to see if that still works tomorrow.

i can take a picture of the screen garbage if you want  but its mostly numbers and small characters.

anybody in central nj want to take a look.

heres a pic of the garbage

Did you remove the daughter board / CPU thing or whatever it had on it ?

And are you certain all the ROMs are in their proper location, etc?

yeah, that thing was a pain, it did not want to come out.  hopefully i didn't mess up the cpu socket when i took it out.

ok, i just noticed (on a pic from an ebay auction for a dkjr board) that there could be a rainbow wire set going from the cpu board p12 to the video board p4, that i don't have.  it was probably removed for the conversion i guess.   dang,  i guess i will be making a wire tonight after work.  unless an ls-30 wire will fit on there.

:banghead:    hopefully that is the problem,   i am an idiot, cause i was looking at these pics yesterday.

maybe just take a look at that little bunch of wires please.   from the photo it looks like they are all in the same order on both sides.  which means I'm going to have to swap a couple of wires on the ls-30 cable, when i find it.    i hope it fits.  i don't know what else i might have lying around that has a 10 pin header on it.  maybe an AT power supply.

i really hope that is all i need,  my four year old was pretty upset that it didnt work.  he kept telling me that i needed to put the back panel on and it would be ok.

well, after reading the manual i found that the little wire is a power jumper wire that provides the same power as the board already has.  why would i need this then.  the answer is  i don't   ( i think).  i assume that the wire supplies power to the other board when using the edge connector.  which my machine does not.

i saw a pic of an open popeye cocktail this morning that appears to support this theory.  it was connected to the machine with the edge connector and had the little jumper wires.

so i am back at square one.  i'll be pulling the board to check things again.

anyone near the jersey shore with a eeprom programmer?

Well, it turns out the dkjr board did not have a z80a cpu in it.  the chip it had is a MAB2650A 7983 GHG8316 MOY.  so i took the z80a out of my popeye ct and poof, it works fine.

Hopefully this will help somebody else in the future to remove the curse known as eight ball action.

now i have to go save my popa   again and again.
