UMK3 to MKII wiring dilemma
« on: August 05, 2007, 08:09:36 pm »
I have an MKII machine that was converted to a UMK3, I finally landed a complete MKII board set with sound board and ribbon cable, however I lack the power cable to go from the MKII main board to the sound board.

its pictured here

I have the wire that looks like a mini IDE cable, I lack the other. Any ideas where to get one (ebay is a bust) I've emailed the guy I bought the board from and Im hoping for the best, but what do I do if he doesnt have it?

Easiest way is probably to just make one.  The connectors on both end are standard 0.156" headers.  The Molex KK series will fit just fine.  Check the wiring diagram, but I'm pretty sure it's just a straight-thru cable.

I will prolly end up making one, just wasnt sure what sized molex to get, they should have the Kk header at Radio shack eh? Also, I lack an MKII service manual, so I'm just going by the pix Ive found online. if anyone has a MKII service book they wanna get rid of cheap, lemme know

EDIT: God bless google, http://www.aaronguilmette.com/gaming/  has a bunch of wiring diagrams and books for download. looks like me and the radio shack will be gettin it on tomorrow

Radio Shack does NOT carry anything from the Molex KK line.  They only carry some of the 0.062" pin/socket line.  Fry's electronics DOES carry a good chunk of the KK line, but I'm not sure if they'd have this.  You can order these from Mouser Electronics and get decent prices (no handling fee, reasonable shipping on first class/priority).

Don't forget the contacts in addition to the housings.  You can crimp them with needle nose pliers (and possibly solder the wire in for additional mechanical strength, as well) for this small application.  I'd go ahead and get almost twice as many contacts as you need since you WILL destroy a few of them, especially if you've never done this before.

AMP also has a series that is compatible, and I think may be what Midway actually used.  Look at the 0.156" MTA series.

I just ordered 2 9 pin headers and 36 female connectors (twice as many as needed, just in case) and I am going to try and hunt down some wire that matches up with the MKII service manual. Thanks for all the help, I'll post up when it all comes in and I put it all together, in the mean time I'm still open to any further advice. ordered from jammaboards.com was about $11 shipped, not bad at all (I'd have preferred a premade wire, but beggars cant be choosers)

BOBA:awesome link, if I wasnt out of paperand ink on my printer I'd print out all 79 pages

It's pretty easy to make your own... I made one for myself before I got an original one from a another message board (somone was just selling it so I grabbed it up).  I would have sold you my home made one, but I already reconverted it to a MK 1 power cord and sold it with the extra MK 1 board set I had. :(

If you need or want some close up pictures of an original power harness hooked up to the MKII board set just let me know.

TK.

Here are the pics you requested... it's just a one to one for each wire, no funny crossing the wires or anything like with MK1.

thanks to all for all the help, it was nice to have visuals to work from, I got the package from jammaboards.com on friday and made the wiring harness today, it works perfectly!

I used electrical tape to bunch up the 4 wires on each side then again at the molex connectors just for added security, Im glad I bought extra connectors, I didnt mess any up wiring them but I did drop some on the floor and lost them, lol.
