Well, I happened to be searching my local Craigslist yesterday when I came across a broken juke for $100.  I came across it first and tonight I now have my project machine!  The grills aren't as transparent as they appear.  The flash really makes it look like they aren't there.  There is also some really neat lighting effects already going on.  We'll just have to see where this goes!

Here is my todo list as of right now:
1.  Possibly put a 23" monitor where the song selection window is.  This would be for music videos, karaoke, and visualizations utilizing Freebox by Barcrest.
2.  Get the record selector to work so that when something is selected, it works as well.  (I'm fairly certain someone on the boards here has got this to work.)
3.  Figure out where to incorporate the touchscreen monitor for song selection.
4.  Use my two 12" cerwin vega floor speakers for audio.

It looks like you've got another cool project on your hands.  You've got plenty of speaker there.  What are your plans for the amp?

Very nice find.  Have fun with it.

Mccoy, you are in Columbus, right?

I scan the Columbus craigslist daily for an old jukebox to convert. I missed that one though.

Good find!

Thanks man!  I've been looking forever.  Craigslist is now next to woot and slickdeals.net on my daily tabs.  It's a perfect fit for the price and I think I can make it look pretty slick.

Thanks Knievel.  I wanted to ask you for any tips about general build.  Did you like the usb volume control you used, and is there anything you would change if you could go back?

I realized that there would not be enough room for the receiver inside, so I have removed the record mechanism and have begun gutting the cabinet.  If it makes anyone who cares feel better, whoever had it before me did quite the job on the wiring and I don't think it would've been repairable.

Love the Powermate, nice and hefty.

Only thing I would do different is an LCD monitor instead of the CRT, which I have actually done since.
The flat surface is much nicer to look at and use.

Using home audio speakers as you suggested works well. I used a pair of Technics I bought back in high school and they sound great in the cabinet.

Excellent.  I have a couple 12" Cerwin Vega floor speakers and a Kenwood Receiver I plan on using to power the badboy.  I have decided to investigate using an Ledwiz to work the lighting in conjunction with the software.  We'll see how that goes.

Thanks for the advice on the volume.  I would really love to be able to use the volume on the receiver to avoid the humm noise that is there when nothing is playing.  I'll report back as details come in.

On my driving cab project I put a volume pot in-line between the CPU (Xbox in my case) and the amp.  Like you, I wanted to use the pot from the amp, but it had a 20 pin PCB attached and I didn't want to screw it up by removing it and putting a ribbon cable in-line.  There was a very slight hum initially, but it went away when I rerouted the stereo wires (volume pot & speakers) away from all power wires/components.

Good luck with your volume control solution.

Did the same thing with my cab.  Built in volume control on the speakers would have been hell to dismantle, so I leave them turned up all the time.  Then I picked up a 15 foot headphones extension wire.  Cut it open and wired an audio pot to it.  The pot has a really long handle so I was able to attach it just under my marquee sticking through the mdf.  Attached a small knob to it and it works and looks great.

Nice thing about the Powermate is pushing on the top of it will mute the music. Didn't really think much of it when I bought the thing but it is really useful when the phone rings or something.  :)

The functions of the unit are programmable as well, right down to speed of the pulsiing LED underneath it.

Most common cause of a hum in your sytem is a ground loop. If you're using home audio equipment it shouldn't be a problem.

Okay, just a couple of updates.  1) Received my LEDWiz from Randy this week.

2) Gutted the jukebox tonight.  Kind of made me sick to rip those parts out, but I know the final result will do it justice.  It looks as though everything will fit fine.  Also, I was able to get the speaker grills off the left and right and it is really exciting to see what can be done in there.  I can't wait to get my speakers in there and some rgb's in the lighting areas.  I took the light lenses off, there are three on each side, and cleaned them with googone.  They came out well and I'm pumped to get the lighting hooked up.  All in all, it looks as though this project will be fairly simple.  The most difficult thing is going to build the custom housing for the touchscreen.

Tomorrow I may go to Bestbuy and pick up the 2nd monitor for the center.  Or I may mow the yard.  It's toss up.

Okay, I did get the jukebox completely gutted.  Man that took forever!  About a million screws to undue and twice that many wires.  It was quite the scene.  All in all, I'm very happy to say that all it should need is a good cleaning and a little paint here and there.  I feel like I smoked a pack of cigarettes though, as the inside has permanent smoke damage.

On another note, I picked up the center monitor.  It is a 21.6" Samsung lcd.  Here is a link to the product page and a pic of the monitor:

Here is the area where the monitor is to go.  The actual viewing size of the monitor is 18.375" x 11.5"'s.  The actual area of the glass is 21.75" x 17".
13.875" is the actual total heighth of the monitor.  I can either center it in the 17" area, or I have a couple ideas.  Above that is the area where the beta brite is to go.  I'll make a piece of plexi to cover that area and cut out what I need from behind.

Below the area where the second monitor is to go, is another glass area appx. 11.125" tall and 22.375" wide.  I think it would be a great marquee area, but I could also see a killer light organ there.

Here is the speaker areas gutted.  There are three places on each side for lighting.  I plan on using Randy's RGB Boards and LEDWiz to power them.  There was a flimsy shiny metal backing used for the lighting, but I'm going to look into diamond plating.  Shiny!

Good thing you caught it before it got cancer.  A couple of coats of paint should cover up the smell.  Nice monitor.

You need to put a lilliput screen where you were thinking of putting the betabrite so you can select songs. Simular to what dragnit has done on his first juke. Personally i thought that would be too small but he assures me it's fine.

Barry, the touchscreen is going on top.  It's right at my wife's eye level and out of the reach of small children without a stool.  There was a rounded thing on top that had me quite worried about fabricating something, but I found that it screwed right off.  So, now that I have a nice flat surface, I just need to decide on the size of the touchscreen.

Gave the jukebox a good scrubbing today and dismantled all the glass, metal, etc, that will need to be removed for painting.  I received the beta brite today and I'm excited about it.  I think I'm going to decase it when mounting.  I also think I'm just going to center the 22" monitor in the middle.  Now to figure out what to do with that bottom window.......... :dunno

Tonight:  Brought home my jukebox components from OSU.  i.e. speakers, computer, monitors, amp, etc.... So, I'm going to start going over what I've got, what I need, and how to make it all work together with this new setup.  The cabinet is painted as well as the speaker grills, and I'm very happy with the results.  It seemed to be exactly what the cabinet needed.  Tomorrow I plan on picking up some plexi to begin constructing the bezel for the 22" monitor and the area where the betabrite will go.  I've got an idea for the glass area below the monitor.  I'll just have to see if I can make that happen.

Okay, last update of the night.  I had four 250 watt cerwin vega speakers to use for this project.  I used the tweeters, woofers, and sub from two of them and just two of the woofers from the other two.  I think it looks pretty solid.  I had to predrill all new holes for the speakers.  That was a blast. ::)  The 12" subs didn't fit completely flush, so I'm going to make an extension ring with a little padding to fix the issue.  Also, where the bottom 5" speaker would go, I'm thinking about putting those 6" electric balls there.  Also, I was able to salvage the power amp from the speakers, so I just need to make a little housing for it and the speaker situation should be set.  Here are the pics:

Here is that plasma ball I was talking about for the bottom speaker holes on the left and right.

I used a 2" hole saw to drill the holes where the speaker hookups were to go.  I used hot glue to seal the hole and hold it in place.  Check out the size of the plug that came out!  I thought it was gonna be about 1/2" deep.  I also drilled a small hole right next to it to bring the wires back up through for the other speakers.  I also used hot glue to seal the hole.  I figured this would give everything a nice clean look as I can tuck the wires into a sleeve.  I then put the 12" subs in.  I used 1/4" foam around the outside of the speakers to make up for any gaps between the speakers and the housing.  I forgot to take pictures of that, but it was pretty straight forward.  I used a marker to outline the speaker, cut it out, and held it in place as I drilled the holes for the speakers.

Here is what it looked like originally:

After getting the bottom done, I decided to do some more this evening since the newborn wasn't ready to clock out yet.  So, I was sitting around checking out BYOAC and nothing new was going on so my mind wondered to the rgb's and LEDWiz I picked up from Randy and how I was going to mount them on the bottom of the jukebox.  I thought and thought and nothing was really jumping out at me, because if you know what Randy's RGB setup looks like, and you knew I was dealing with 6 1" holes, it might cause some problems for you too.  Anyways, I was just getting ready to cut some wood to hold them and as I picked up the metal yard stick, the idea just jumped out at me.  So, without further ado, I introduce what may be the most unique mounting of Randy's RGB boards to date.  I cut the yard stick to length, used some 1/4" thick foam and the hot glue gun again and this is the final results.  Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to mount the same RGB setups in the 6 2" holes on the sides! :banghead:

Here is the six holes that are at the front top of the bottom speaker area.  There used to be just regular bulbs there that did nothing special.

I marked the center of the holes on the yard stick, drilled out the width of the RGB, and here is what resulted.

Here are the six RGB boards mounted with the foam and hot glue.

Here is the whole thing mounted with a couple self tapping screws.

Tonight I had the wonderful experience of completing the speaker wiring.  Now I remember why I don't build these things left and right.  I don't mind it so much, but it is tedious.  It's all pretty now, and I've moved on to making the 2" plates for the RGB boards for the left and right sides.  I cut 2.5" squares out of some 18 gauge metal, and I'm currently drilling the four corner holes in each of the six plates and the center hole for the rgb.  They're not pretty, but they'll get the job done.  I hope to get the LEDWiz wiring done tomorrow night.  That would pretty much leave me with mounting the betabrite and the 22" monitor as the last two big tasks.  Making the encasement for the touchscreen will be the biggest chore of all, but I'm not counting that yet so I don't go insane! :banghead:

EDIT:  Forgot to mention that I took the speakers for a test drive, and they still kick butt after all these years.  The wife was more than a little upset that I was rockin' the casba with the newborn sleeping upstairs.  Sheesh.

Here are some pics of what I accomplished overnight.  The first pic is just a sample of the speaker wire all buttoned up.

Here is one of the six pieces of metal I used to hold the RGB board.  I told you it wasn't pretty:

Here is a pic of the whole getup installed from the back and then from the front.  The last two pics are of the cover that goes over them.
