Question: Happ 27" monitor bezel + 27" SONY Triniton TV?
« on: July 10, 2007, 10:16:12 am »
I use a 27" SONY Trinitron TV for my cabinet (model from 2000)

I am looking into what to use as a Bezel... Ihought of using a Gator Board and cut to size.

I am curious to know if the "proper" Happ 27" Bezel would work for my setup: http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49010500.htm
I looked at the "inside dimensions" from the website, but it doesn't seem right (sony tv or not, isn't a 27" screen taller than ~15"?)

The one thing about 2000 Trinitron TVs, is that they are a bit "curved" horizontally:

Thanks for letting me know what you think I should do (and if this happ bezel would work in my case)

Hi,
Most trinitron picture tubes are flat vertically and curved horizontally. I have a 21" Trinitron PC monitor that I am prepping to use in a cab build and am using a 19" bezel. The usual monitor bezels should be ok although you may see a gap on the sides due to the vertical flat nature of this picture tube.
As long as the bezel is SMALLER than the screen you should be ok.
If you want perfection you need to find a different bezel though or like you said, make one yourself.
Good luck,
Alex

Thank you very much for replying.

If I were to make my own bezel, what material would you recommend?

I have seen pictures of people using paper/cardboard but it generally doesn't look as clean as I'd like...

Someone suggested black Gator Boards (like foam core boards, but stronger / stiff) which sounded like a good idea.

Are there materials prefered by BYOAC members?

Thanks again.

Tailgunner wrote this great piece on how he built his own bezel for his monitor (came out very nice!)

OK!

I picked up 2 sheets of FOAM CORE BOARDS from the office supply tonight, and made my Bezel
It looks good, although I need to use some velcro to keep things in place. It's not all "shaped" like most bezels, but it blends well with the Trinitron's existing contour, and hides all of the cabinet's inside... Meets the goals to me!

Next I'm putting my plexiglass in there... Stay tuned :)

Thanks for the help! This is such a great community, I am happy to be a part of it.

If you Bezel looks good ... but not great then I would suggest getting some smoked or grey tinted glass instead of plexiglass.  The tinted glass will help hide any imperfections in the bezel itself.

Yes, the tinted glass does a fantastic job and makes the screen look so nice too.

Thanks for the pointer.

I was planning on getting grey smoked plexi - instead of glass because I'm scared my 5 year old (or his friends) will break it somehow... I understand you can get tampered glass too but I don't know how confident I should be in it

any input is welcome.

This may be a bit late but I used the Happ Bezel with my Sony 27" TV and it came out great.  The curve is very slight and the space between the bezel and the tube is not noticable.

There's lots of pics on it in my project thread.

I also added tempered glass.  I was told that it's extremely tough when hit on it's face.  Impact to the corner's or sides can easily damage it.

Hi Dmod!

I took a quick look at your project thread, very cool stuff! I will read the details when I get a chance.

Thanks for letting me know about the Happ bezel. The foam boards were cheap (2 x $5) so if I end up moving to a platic bezel (happ) later I won't feel too bad. Tonight I'll probably velcro the one I made (curve it in place along the TV shape) and put it all in place ready for the glass (or plexi), and see how it looks.

I don't have that much space between the front of the TV and my controller surface - the thinner foam-core bezel works well in that respect. If I go Happ Bezel I'll have to shave an inch off my control surface.

BTW attached below is a photo, taken before I made the bezel :) ... SCRATCH-BUILT and designed (my own plans). I'm proud of it already :)

I hope you like my cabinet design + construction so far.

Thanks again.

Thank you everyone for the kind words :) I tried to keep that minimal / small CP design... Maybe I should post a project thread ;)

**** UPDATE **** Bezel fixed + grey smoked plexiglass in place!

No tempered + tinted glass available from calling around ... only on order... plexi was cheap ($20) so I figured I'd give it a try...
I like the result very much so far.

new photos attached  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Ignore the (lack of) marquee... I just put the 2 1/16" plexi sheets (sandwich for the art that's coming) I got today in there to check measurements.
