Worried about button lengths vs. joystick lengths.
« on: July 09, 2007, 07:58:41 pm »
Ok, so I ordered my buttons and joysticks from Happ last week (and they shipped everything except one red joystick), but I overlooked something about the buttons.

On the recommendation in Project Arcade, I bought the concave pushbuttons with horizontal switches. I also bought for of the Happ Ultimate joysticks. I noticed today when I was checking to track my order that the pushbuttons are longer now and it said they will work best with 3/4" wood + lexan. I was going to get 5/8" thick MDF.

Is this something to be concerned with, or is the length adjustable as long as I don't actually need them to be longer? I'm thinking it won't be a problem, because the diagram for the pushbuttons makes it look like the nut on the bottom will adjust for the thickness of my wood?

Does anyone foresee a problem with the thickness of my wood?  :laugh2:

You don't want to talk about the thickness of my wood?

Seriously though, thanks. I know the question sounds dumb, but the first time I'll be seeing a pushbutton that's not installed in a cabinet will be tomorrow when mine arrive.

They'll snug up. Worse case, you can make some washers out of 1/4" material for underneath (but you won't need to do that) but if you did thats how I would do it. You probably won't have to. But if you did - thats all I'm saying.  ;)

The only issue that I can see you running into is if you don't have very much clearance under the CP.  But most people aren't foolish enough to build thier CPs like that.  (I, however, am)

Cant speak specifically to the buttons you bought, but the ones I got (and I suspect they are all much the same) use an underside nut to tighten things up, letting you adjust from the buttons full length to almost nothing.  For the IL translucents I got, that would be quite a range (prolly more than 1" to ...nothing).  As a previous post mentions, the only issue is clearance under the panel.  At the top, all is well.  I'm just starting too, hope this helps.

The threads for the button nut run up the full length of the pushbutton. You can use the same buttons in a 2 inch thick CP (why you'd build one that thick, I have no idea, but you could) as you would use in a 1/8' metal CP.
