  • This is your brain on games.
My cabinet that I am converting is only 25 1/8'' wide.

I am wanting to get the most bang for my buck and have looked at the 24'' lcd's which are sweet but very costly.

I have read about decasing tv's and sawing a relief cut to allow for flex of the case.

My question is anyone using a 27'' tv that is less than 25 1/8 inch's wide without modification that has component connections?

p.s.
my head hurts......there is sooooooooooo much to learn.

Regards
GD

There are a couple new 24" CRT TVs with component inputs at Walmart.  Check this thread:

I was in the same boat you are in.  It's tough to find a 27" that will fit in these cabinets.

You have to keep in mind TWO requirements...

1. Fits in a cab that is around 25.25" wide
2. Has S-video

This is key because I found a lot of TVs that will fit on craigslist, but they didn't have S-video.
I found a lot of tvs with S-video, but they didn't fit.

I just decided to go to Walmart and get a new 24" flat screen.  Honestly, it looks great and I don't notice the 3" difference.

Actually, 24 is almost to big as is.

Check out the photo with the 24"...

I scoured every store and internet site I could find and couldn't find one to fit my Midway cab either.   I ended up buying one of these, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7631226&st=sharp+27%22&type=product&id=1130986501338 open box so I got a $50 gift card as well.  I had a couple of friends come over and we sawed the sides down a little and screwed it back together.  We were thinking about decasing but I was worried about electrocuting myself or one of my kids getting in there.  I also removed the wood slats that the bezel and glass rest on.  I just bought some square dowels at Lowe's painted them black and screwed them in so I can remove them if necessary.  I was thinking about getting the 24" from Walmart as well but those are flat screens and don't line up with the original bezel.  Attached a couple shots below.

I will have to check my tv dimensions later on, but I am thinking almost any standard 27" tv with the speakers on the bottom is fine.  I think mine is samsung.  It has component input, powers on to the last used input, and is 27" diagonally.  I think my cab is 25" wide giving about .5" on each side of the tv.  You have to remember the screen is 27" diagonal.  That gives you a 21.6" width for the viewing display.  As long as the tv has the speakers on the bottom, the case will probably not be more than two inches wide on the sides.

Just check craigslist for some good deals.  Picked mine up there and it is working great.

Zeno,

What was the price for the Wal-Mart 24"?  What do you think of the quality of image and construction?

I checked online and it isn't up there anymore.  I only bought it about 3 months ago, but I guess it was discontinued.  It was around $150.

No complaints.  Looks great.  Best price out in the market.

I forget the brand.  I'll double check when I get home.

I wish this was true.  Almost every TV I found that was 27" w/ speakers on the bottom was about 3/4" to wide.

I'm a little girl and didn't want to take a saw to a new tv case.  I think even Costco would reject this if I needed to return it.

BTW brock - your screen looks great!  Perfect fit.  I couldn't even tell it was a TV.

I know why you had to cut it, I actually checked that tv out last night (tape measure in hand) at my local BB and it measures just over 25 1/2''

Are you happy with the picture quality and does it remember the last selected input on power up?

Thanks, I'm surprised the 25" bezel fit that well too.  I'm very happy with the picture.  I have the Sapphire 9600 with the Monoprice dvi-component dongle.  I run at 640x432 for my windows resolution.  I need to force mame to run at that resolution because I get a little overscanning but I haven't changed that yet.  Yes it does remember the last input when you turn it back on.  It doesn't automatically turn on when you plug it in though.  I just drilled a small hole through the bezel and glass support and use the remote to turn it off and on.  Attached are a few shots that I took.  Pictures of tv screens never work that well and these are no exception.  ;)

At my girls last night so no chance to check dimensions, but have you looked at old 25" tv's?  The screen width should be 1 1/2" shorter so the sides would be that must too.  It is becoming harder and harder to find tube tvs with the speakers on the bottom in stores.  You might swing by some pawn shops.

Also, do you own a router?  It would be pretty easy to trim off 3/8" on each side.  It would also aid in holding the tv in place.  You could reinforce the other parts of the cab with some bracing if need be.  This would also make you picture look sweet as it would be almost to big for the cab.  Since the part of the tv that is too wide is just the front portion, you really would only need to trim off a 5" x 20" x 3/8" chunk of cabinet.

Why bother with all that when you can just get a 24" which would more appropriately fit your cabinet?

Checked out my 27" tv and it is 25 3/8", but my 25" tv was 24 3/8" wide.  All depends if you are looking to save money and get an old tv or spend a little more for a new one.
