happ trackball problem
« on: June 25, 2007, 01:54:07 pm »
I'm having some problems with my 3" happ trackball.  I changed out the encoder wheels with the ones from GGG.  I read on the boards that they weren't made for happs, but they still work fine.  Anyway, I switched them, and now the trackball is acting crazy.  The y-axis is inverted and the x-axis zig-zags when you try to move left and right.  Like you move left and it goes left an inch then back right an inch.  Its hard to describe.  Does anyone have any clue what could be wrong?

If this is happening in mame try the trackball in windows.

No, its just the trackball in general.  In mame, windows, anything.  Its just acting really strange.

And I have tried a regular mouse and it functions perfectly.  No inverted axis or anything.

Why did you need to switch out the the encoder wheels in the first place?

Sounds like its moving both the encoder wheels when spinning. I would check to see if there is any binding or wear in the rollers, or perhaps one of the rollers is not firmly seated?

I'm not sure what you mean?  Depending on what direction you are moving, both encoder wheels will be moving.  The only way that both aren't in motion is if you move exactly along either axis.  I have already checked this and neither wheel moves when it isn't supposed to.  This also doesn't explain the fact that the new encoder wheels invert both axis.  That just doesn't make any sense at all because it doesn't change the direction that they spin.  There isn't any binding or wear in the rollers either, the ball is brand new.  I opened it up and checked everything anyway.

And to answer Vidmouse's question, I replaced the encoder wheels with GGG's high resolution ones in hopes of eliminating backspin.

I just checked out the photos, thanks.  It looks like the optical boards are different on the PS/2 / USB versions of the HAPP trackball.  This probably accounts for why some have have reported them to work with the standard HAPP trackballs and others with the USB / PS/2 versions are having difficulty.

I'll investigate this further and update the product description with the results.  Please feel free to return the encoder wheels for a refund.  after seeing the type of optical sensors used on these boards, I'm pretty sure they cannot be made to work with them.

I don't mean to dig up old threads (but I guess it's better than making a new one!), but I'm having a similar problem:

I've wired my 3" happ track ball to the optipac, just as andy's instructions say on his site, and for whatever reason, my axises appear flipped and inverted.  for example:

if I move the ball left, it goes down.  if I move it right, it goes up.  if I move it up, it goes right.  if I move it down, it goes left.

I have the colored wires connected to the ipac just as andy's instructions say, and the arrow above the word MONITOR on the trackball body points toward the monitor (i assume that was the proper placement).

Any ideas?

I'd try just switching the wires between the ones that are connected.  Switch Up and Right and switch Down and Left.
