You know, penis enhancement surgery has really gone down in price these days, you could save yourself a butt-load of money and unlike a ferrari and delorian, you might actually be able to use the latter.  ;)

I've already got a penis I can play with anytime I want.  However, I don't have a Ferrari 308.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

Spoken like a true idiot that has never actually driven a high-performance sports car.  It has nothing to do with "macho self esteem" BS as so many WOMEN think it does.

I applaud you.... :tool:

I was kidding, and refering to someone as a  :tool: will get you banned, so respectfully watch your mouth.

Seriously though, I've driven hi performance cars before and I find them personally to be waste of space.  See the problem is these things called traffic and speed limits.  Unless you go out to a track and race them every weekend all that "performance" is wasted.  Owning a $100,000 car doesn't get you to walmart any faster, it just means you have a lot less money you could have bought something really fun with.  :)

The delorian though, that's another story.  The stainless-steel design makes for a suprisingly practical car.  The price isn't horrible either.  I mean for a car that hasn't been built in 20 years, that's not bad at all.

Having owned a practical car and a high performance car, I couldn't disagree with you more.  While I do take my car to the track from time to time, its still a whole lot of fun opening it up at stoplights or freeway on-ramps.  And on certain freeways and highways, its just plain dangerous to have a car that can't quickly accelerate (of course many people can't handle the extra power, making it more dangerous for them to own a high performance car then a practical car, but this conversation isn't about that).

Interesting...are you going to use your mighty intellect to ban me?  If it's such an offense to call someone like you a  :tool:, then why is the  :tool: emoticon available? :dunno Riddle me that one batman.....

To each their own opinion, but there are a LOT of people who disagree with you.  And I'm sure you're joking, but I doubt many people drive their $100k sports cars to walmart.....they take their $60k SUV's instead ;D

I don't own anything exotic, but I drive a Lexus IS RWD sports sedan and it is a major KICK to drive.  No need to track it, but hot-damn if the acceleration, handling, and braking on that car doesn't get the blood pumping.....

I somewhat agree with HC here... I'm totally indifferent to performance cars.  Give me a good automatic 4 cylinder and I'm cool.  I have driven 70s muscle cars and stuff up to mid-high range domestic sports cars... didn't do much for me to justify tripling the cost at a bare minimum.  Just not for me.

I have driven a loaded Trans-Am a few times, and while it was very fun I don't think I would really want one of my own. I just like driving. Give me a low horses, high rpm stick shift and I'm good to go. Fun to drive, get to shift gears alot, and won't get busted by the cops.

OK, so I'm having Tracker withdrawal ( I traded it in). So sue me! ;) My dream car was a Honda S2000. 6 speed that red lines at around 9000 rpm. They should be pretty cheap by the time I hit my mid-life crisis right? :laugh2:

Well, that's why it's great that we have a broad selection of cars available.   :dunno

Some people spend their $$ on cars, others on electronics, and then a few real geeks spend it on arcade machines and pins  :D

I would never own one of those for the simple fact that sourcing parts would have the odds of slim and none.

Depends where you live..I would be that in and around most metropolitan areas you can find parts fairly easily.  ie, there are enough shops that work on these regularly that you can get original and repro parts without too much trouble.  Also, with the internet and 'net clubs, that makes the issue even easier.

10 years ago my dad owned a '58 Alfa Romeo Guilietta roadster and even then he was able to source original parts for most things.  Things he couldn't find, he had fabricated at a local machine shop to original specs.

I wouldn't mind a Mustang convertible from the early side of the 5.0 run in the late 80s.

I just recently traded in my 2K3 Convertible GT for a SUV (thanks to our new addition this year).  It was the most fun to drive car I have ever owned.  Beating out even the 69 Olds 442 that I had thru high school, and the 91' Ford Probe GT that was the first car I bought new instead of used.  Just about every passenger I had in the car did have complaints about lack of comfort, but I figured screw em.  If I could have gotten a baby seat in the thing with my two large teenage sons I would have kept it.  C'est la vie.  I plan on going the sports car route again once I'm past child seats.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

One of my math teachers had an olds like that - with the circular rear lights. A little odd compared to a chevelle; sort of in the vein of the difference between a 50s step-side Chevy and a Studabaker. I'd take the latter.

Sports cars, or luxury sports, etc - can be fun. My brother has a Lincoln LS. Some years ago, I visited and we went to Six Flags Magic Mountain. I've been there a few times. The ride home in my brother's car was actually more thrilling. Of course, who's driving makes a difference. He also has an all original '70 454 convertible Chevelle he drives around when he visits home. It'll jump and stuff, and you can hear it from a ways off, but I prefer the Lincoln. (Along with all the luxury it has, and the pep, it's a 4-door. Coupes are a pain in the ass.)

My girlfriend said she'd buy me anything under $40k. I thought an LS like my brother's, or perhaps the later model of it, would be nice. My brother said instead of spending all that cash, he'd sell me his for five grand. My girlfriend likes to avoid possible repairs on older cars, though.

Parts aren't bad at all.  Deloreans, parts for engine and tranny are available at a Volvo and Puegot dealer.  The rest you can get from the place in Houston.  308's are a bit harder but not too bad via the internet.  A couple parts on the ferarris are hard to find but those are the ones you make sure are in good shape when you purchase the car.

Supra's can very easily be a $100,000 car. I bought a double din cd deck for my tracker off a spoiled rich kid that drives a souped up Supra. I believe his is packin about $75,000. Oddly enough, it is his THIRD Supra - he wrecked the previous two.

In the grand scheme of things even the 308 isn't a hi performance sports car by today's measure.  My daily driver Infiniti weights nearly the same as a 308 and has 60 more hp.  The 308 was built during the emission control crackdown.  Companies hadn't put the research into how to get the HP out of an engine with all the smog control strapped on it.  It took a decade for that to happen.

People don't buy these cars to own a supercar.  It is much like why we build or refurb arcade cabinets (at least for me).  It brings me back to a time when I had no cares or responsibility.  It is for the nostalgia and to have something to tinker with.  I'm the type who doesn't like to be idle.  It is hard for me to sit and watch an hour of T.V.   I'd rather be building or working on something with my hands (Probably because I sit at a desk all day and just use my brain).

Neither the Delorean or the 308 are all that practical though if you have a family.  They are both 2 seaters.  That is why they are a nice hobby car.  You can own your 2 daily drivers for the wife and kids and have a 2 seater for nights out with the wife or whatever.

I had an '89 for a while (until I finally accepted the fact that it was a bottomless money pit).  Not quite the same, but still fun.  There's a sweet '90s-one in the parking lot where I work - I need to meet the owner.

I didn't move here until after college in '94, so no on Dana.  I did see Sam Perkins at Southcenter once, though...  :D  And I hate those giant wings on the back.  I think they look really stupid.

It's still a Supra.  I would think an NBA player, especially someone that tall, would want more of a status symbol.

Well, first of all, Dana Barros (I misspelled it above, no W) was TINY for an NBA player @ only 5' 11".  H drove a MkIV supra pretty much from the day they hit the states, and of course it was a twin turbo model.

Sure, it was still "just" a toyota supra, but this was right in the thick of the escalation of the non-exotic sports car race-> supra MK IV, RX-7 GenIII, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX, etc.  These were former "affordable" sports cars that were now pushing $50-100k rather than their initial target of sub $30k.

And Dana's didn't have the huge stock wing, it had an aftermarket F1 type...VERY ugly.  Before that car, he drove a 300ZX with a gargantuan wing too.....I hate aftermarket wings.

I totally agree with MikeQ about the 308, DeLorean, and some other older "exotics" being as much a nostalgia thing than a performance car thing. Sure, they ARE fun to drive (I've driven several older ferraris and other older sports cars), but a modern moderately performance car will outperform most of them.  Heck, my IS250RWD probably accelerates and handles better than many 80's era sports cars, but it doesn't have the same cool factor to it.  The most fun car I've ever driven was a De Tomaso Pantera....thing was a total pig to drive, and at 3000lbs+ it handled like one too.  But damn it was fun  8)

I forgot he played for the Celts.....not a "great" player, but a decent role player.  He was a sparkplug for the sonics of the day, he'd come off the bench with good energy and fire up the team.

The older cars are also fun to work on.  Cars now are totally computer controlled and tinkering with the performance means popping out a chip and popping in a  new one and setting some parameters.  Not very fun and not very flexible.

I used to think Delorians were pretty cool.  But as said, they are not too
speedy.   I think for full 'coolness effect"  youd have to upgrade it to look
like the movie car.   heh

As for Sports cars, I never really cared...   Until one day a game collector
friend asked me if I wanted to take a ride in his RX7.   It didnt look that
special at all,  but what the hell...

I strap in, and he makes it out to the main road.  Then he floors the
thing.  It was like being in a Rocket!  I was thrown back and litterally
glued to the seat for several seconds.  Absolutely AWESOME!

He also ichanged the suspension and installed a racing kit which tightens
the frame so that it can hug the road and take corners at SICK speeds.

On the Highway, he opened it up, and on a corner that my car would have
had trouble taking at 45 mph on the Outside lane,  he took the INSIDE lane
at maybe 90mph.  It was Rock solid!  Didnt slide, slip, or show any sign of
loss of control.   The G-forces felt were intense and wicked!  :)

The bad part, is that to get such performance, the suspension was rock
hard.  You felt every little crack and bump in the road.  He said he only
used it for short trips because his ass and back cant take it for too long!
But he also takes it out to a nearby racetrack occasionally.  Must be a
real blast.   Hes driven it to work several times...  but hes gotten into a
bit too much trouble doing that.  If he gets one more speeding ticket, I
believe they will take his license.

If I had a lot of money to burn, I might consider such a thing.  As it
stands, Id rather have a nice comfy van that I could use to haul machines,
wood, people...etc in.

Cant wait for the Electric cars to be affordable.  The acceleration
abilities on those is mostly only limited by battery power/life.   Lightweight
materials will also help too.

Ohh, and finally, if i had to choose between a 2nd car for 'fun' and a
gameroom with more games (such as a nice row of williams pinball machines)
Its more games for me :)

:D  And I hate those giant wings on the back.  I think they look really stupid.

Maybe that was his 'status' thing. Ya, they's ugly.

My brother does this kind of stuff daily in his commute and general driving round SoCal, with his stock Lincoln. He must have good energy flow cos he rarely gets tickets, and never with me. (I make sure his energy's good when I drive with him.) Although, one time at night he hesitated on making a left turn as a bus was coming, then decided to and didn't notice this pimp-lookin black dude crossing the street there. I hollered at my brother, the pimp guy bucked and jumped, and fortunately we also missed the bus...and continued on our way.

Nearby theres a very curvey road that goes up and over the mountains (Angeles Crest highway) which is a shortcut for me to get to certain parts of L.A., so I take it every once in a while and I always have a lot of fun doing it.  All the turns have signs up that say you should go either 25 or 35 (depending on the turn), but I rarely drop below 70 the whole way.  I've only had the tires start to give once when I was powering out of a turn, but once I took my foot off the gas it was fine.  I remember the first time I took that highway I thought I was going pretty quick until a nissan 350z came up on me real fast and passed me, I decided to shadow his speed and learned how fast I could actually take the turns.  Good times.

In N.C. there is a famous road called "The Tail of The Dragon".  It makes 318 turns in 11 miles.  It is a destination for bike and car clubs everywhere.

The delorean club went there a couple years ago.  They wrecked at least 1 delorean.
