Some 80's nostalgia
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:57:44 am »
A lot of people don't know this but when Delorean Motor Company went out of business it was bought and has been operating in Houston Texas.

I was just on vacation and passed through Houston so I stopped and checked it out.  I'm hoping to restore a Delorean and a Ferarri 308 GTS so I had an interest in seeing what DMC Houston provided in restoration services.

DMC has a complete inventory of parts and can actually build you a new Delorean from parts.  They have VIN #'s issued to them from the 80's and can legally build new Deloreans.

If I ever have a midlife crisis and get a sports car, it will be a DeLorean.  And a garage.

My restoration project is gated by the size of my garage.  I can only fit three cars in it so something has to go before I can do the 308.  I'm thinking about putting a lift in the small bay.  This would let me stack the Delorean and the 308.

That's some $$ right there.  The whole thing, the cars/garage/lift.

Delorean restored is about $25,000.

Good lift  $3000

308 unrestored $16,000 - restored $30,000.

about equal to a good size game room  (like saints).

3 car garage is also a 5 figure item, not a small one either.  Here in MA you're looking at mid 5 figures if you count the land it occupies.

Just saw a Ferrari 308 GTS on the road yesterday.  Not something you see everyday on the streets around the upper midwest.  That car still looks cool after all these years.

If you ever have a midlife crisis and get a DeLorean, you still won't have a sports car.

Its a 130 horspower 2 3/4 ton car that does 0-60 in 10.5 seconds. Hardly a sports car. A new V8 pickup will blow it away while towing a 25 foot boat. Its notorious for its role in Back To The Future, but it never wound up being the car John DeLorean envisioned, and basically ruined his life trying to save.

Edit to add: Sorry Mike, but restore the Ferrari first.  ;)

Still works for me as I don't care about performance.  I'd be doing it to look cool.  If I want a sports car with real power I'll buy a <cheap ass red wedged late 80s domestic "sports car" that I can't place the name of no matter how hard I try>.

At this point in time, I don't think it would be "cool" to drive around in a Delorean. I think that it more appropriately screams "nerd". ;D :laugh2:

Personally, I think it would be neat to have an MG sportster. IMO, they are like a poor man's James Bond car. ;)

I didn't say I would be cool.  I'd be sitting in the seat giggling "I HAVE A DELOREAN" over and over.

YES!  A Fiero!

EDIT:  ooh!  How do I get onto the Fiero Who's Who?!    :applaud: :applaud:

Thats why the car I eventually want to restore is one of DeLorean's other creations, a classic GTO.

Fire Bomb?  :laugh2:

Fixed that for you. ;) ;D

I have a buddy who has restored three Fiero's. He loves the things. I drove his first one once and hated it. Unresponsive as hell on all control fronts. BTW, the original design flaw was that the oil cooler was not properly designed and the oil would overheat and ignite. Not all Fiero's are fires waiting to happen, but they are still poorly designed and a ---smurfette--- to work on.

There is a lot that can be done to enhance the performance of the Delorean.  There is a company building a turbo for it that will bring it up to around 300hp after some manifold and pipe replacement.

But that isn't why people own them anyway.

We have a Delorean club here and get a crowd everytime they meet at a local burger joint.  A lot of people like them.

I don't think I've had a midlife crisis.  It's more that I spend the last 20 years busting ---my bottom--- and am finally at a point that I can afford to buy toys for myself.

I'm 40 and have kids in elementary and preschool so I'm somewhat of an anomoly.

I've mentioned that "at 45 maybe the guy just has some spare cash finally" concept and people generally shrug it off.  It makes them feel better about themselves to make fun of the guy.

Ya, I got a bunch of crap from my co-workers when I bought my last car.  I had never drove a new car because any new car we bought went to my wife and I got the hand me down.  When I bought me a nice new car, I got the whole midlife crisis speech.

Agreed.  I came very close to buying a '91 or '92 MR2 turbo....man that car was a kick in the pants to drive....I had a '90 Celica GT that looked fast, but was pretty much a dog performance wise.  (this was back in '95 I think)

They are awesome.  A little finicy but still awesome.

Looks-wise, I prefer the 348.

DeLorean: ugly nose on it.

MR2: pretty fast, I heard.

328 is very nice too (basically the 308 with body colored bumpers and better fuel injection) but I like the original classic design of the 308.

Oh, the 328 is homely-lookin compared to the 308. Not a lot different but definitely that toned-down look characteristic of the late 80s. I'm a little conservative when it comes to contour, though, hence the preference for the 348.

Magnum originally drove a 1979 308 gts.  These were fiberglass.

I'd like to find a 1984ish 308 gts QV to restore.  Steel body, quadrovalue.

I was kidding, and refering to someone as a  :tool: will get you banned, so respectfully watch your mouth.

Seriously though, I've driven hi performance cars before and I find them personally to be waste of space.  See the problem is these things called traffic and speed limits.  Unless you go out to a track and race them every weekend all that "performance" is wasted.  Owning a $100,000 car doesn't get you to walmart any faster, it just means you have a lot less money you could have bought something really fun with.  :)

The delorian though, that's another story.  The stainless-steel design makes for a suprisingly practical car.  The price isn't horrible either.  I mean for a car that hasn't been built in 20 years, that's not bad at all.

Having owned a practical car and a high performance car, I couldn't disagree with you more.  While I do take my car to the track from time to time, its still a whole lot of fun opening it up at stoplights or freeway on-ramps.  And on certain freeways and highways, its just plain dangerous to have a car that can't quickly accelerate (of course many people can't handle the extra power, making it more dangerous for them to own a high performance car then a practical car, but this conversation isn't about that).

To each their own opinion, but there are a LOT of people who disagree with you.  And I'm sure you're joking, but I doubt many people drive their $100k sports cars to walmart.....they take their $60k SUV's instead ;D

I don't own anything exotic, but I drive a Lexus IS RWD sports sedan and it is a major KICK to drive.  No need to track it, but hot-damn if the acceleration, handling, and braking on that car doesn't get the blood pumping.....

I somewhat agree with HC here... I'm totally indifferent to performance cars.  Give me a good automatic 4 cylinder and I'm cool.  I have driven 70s muscle cars and stuff up to mid-high range domestic sports cars... didn't do much for me to justify tripling the cost at a bare minimum.  Just not for me.

I have driven a loaded Trans-Am a few times, and while it was very fun I don't think I would really want one of my own. I just like driving. Give me a low horses, high rpm stick shift and I'm good to go. Fun to drive, get to shift gears alot, and won't get busted by the cops.

OK, so I'm having Tracker withdrawal ( I traded it in). So sue me! ;) My dream car was a Honda S2000. 6 speed that red lines at around 9000 rpm. They should be pretty cheap by the time I hit my mid-life crisis right? :laugh2:

Depends where you live..I would be that in and around most metropolitan areas you can find parts fairly easily.  ie, there are enough shops that work on these regularly that you can get original and repro parts without too much trouble.  Also, with the internet and 'net clubs, that makes the issue even easier.

10 years ago my dad owned a '58 Alfa Romeo Guilietta roadster and even then he was able to source original parts for most things.  Things he couldn't find, he had fabricated at a local machine shop to original specs.

I wouldn't mind a Mustang convertible from the early side of the 5.0 run in the late 80s.

I just recently traded in my 2K3 Convertible GT for a SUV (thanks to our new addition this year).  It was the most fun to drive car I have ever owned.  Beating out even the 69 Olds 442 that I had thru high school, and the 91' Ford Probe GT that was the first car I bought new instead of used.  Just about every passenger I had in the car did have complaints about lack of comfort, but I figured screw em.  If I could have gotten a baby seat in the thing with my two large teenage sons I would have kept it.  C'est la vie.  I plan on going the sports car route again once I'm past child seats.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

One of my math teachers had an olds like that - with the circular rear lights. A little odd compared to a chevelle; sort of in the vein of the difference between a 50s step-side Chevy and a Studabaker. I'd take the latter.

Sports cars, or luxury sports, etc - can be fun. My brother has a Lincoln LS. Some years ago, I visited and we went to Six Flags Magic Mountain. I've been there a few times. The ride home in my brother's car was actually more thrilling. Of course, who's driving makes a difference. He also has an all original '70 454 convertible Chevelle he drives around when he visits home. It'll jump and stuff, and you can hear it from a ways off, but I prefer the Lincoln. (Along with all the luxury it has, and the pep, it's a 4-door. Coupes are a pain in the ass.)

My girlfriend said she'd buy me anything under $40k. I thought an LS like my brother's, or perhaps the later model of it, would be nice. My brother said instead of spending all that cash, he'd sell me his for five grand. My girlfriend likes to avoid possible repairs on older cars, though.

Parts aren't bad at all.  Deloreans, parts for engine and tranny are available at a Volvo and Puegot dealer.  The rest you can get from the place in Houston.  308's are a bit harder but not too bad via the internet.  A couple parts on the ferarris are hard to find but those are the ones you make sure are in good shape when you purchase the car.

Supra's can very easily be a $100,000 car. I bought a double din cd deck for my tracker off a spoiled rich kid that drives a souped up Supra. I believe his is packin about $75,000. Oddly enough, it is his THIRD Supra - he wrecked the previous two.

In the grand scheme of things even the 308 isn't a hi performance sports car by today's measure.  My daily driver Infiniti weights nearly the same as a 308 and has 60 more hp.  The 308 was built during the emission control crackdown.  Companies hadn't put the research into how to get the HP out of an engine with all the smog control strapped on it.  It took a decade for that to happen.

People don't buy these cars to own a supercar.  It is much like why we build or refurb arcade cabinets (at least for me).  It brings me back to a time when I had no cares or responsibility.  It is for the nostalgia and to have something to tinker with.  I'm the type who doesn't like to be idle.  It is hard for me to sit and watch an hour of T.V.   I'd rather be building or working on something with my hands (Probably because I sit at a desk all day and just use my brain).

Neither the Delorean or the 308 are all that practical though if you have a family.  They are both 2 seaters.  That is why they are a nice hobby car.  You can own your 2 daily drivers for the wife and kids and have a 2 seater for nights out with the wife or whatever.

I had an '89 for a while (until I finally accepted the fact that it was a bottomless money pit).  Not quite the same, but still fun.  There's a sweet '90s-one in the parking lot where I work - I need to meet the owner.

I didn't move here until after college in '94, so no on Dana.  I did see Sam Perkins at Southcenter once, though...  :D  And I hate those giant wings on the back.  I think they look really stupid.

Well, first of all, Dana Barros (I misspelled it above, no W) was TINY for an NBA player @ only 5' 11".  H drove a MkIV supra pretty much from the day they hit the states, and of course it was a twin turbo model.

Sure, it was still "just" a toyota supra, but this was right in the thick of the escalation of the non-exotic sports car race-> supra MK IV, RX-7 GenIII, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX, etc.  These were former "affordable" sports cars that were now pushing $50-100k rather than their initial target of sub $30k.

And Dana's didn't have the huge stock wing, it had an aftermarket F1 type...VERY ugly.  Before that car, he drove a 300ZX with a gargantuan wing too.....I hate aftermarket wings.

I totally agree with MikeQ about the 308, DeLorean, and some other older "exotics" being as much a nostalgia thing than a performance car thing. Sure, they ARE fun to drive (I've driven several older ferraris and other older sports cars), but a modern moderately performance car will outperform most of them.  Heck, my IS250RWD probably accelerates and handles better than many 80's era sports cars, but it doesn't have the same cool factor to it.  The most fun car I've ever driven was a De Tomaso Pantera....thing was a total pig to drive, and at 3000lbs+ it handled like one too.  But damn it was fun  8)

I was out with some friends one night, and one of my buddies pointed and said "Hey, that's Dana Barros"....I looked and was like  :dunno  Those are just normal guys over there,I don't see any NBA guys...they're all too short.

It was him..... ;)

I forgot he played for the Celts.....not a "great" player, but a decent role player.  He was a sparkplug for the sonics of the day, he'd come off the bench with good energy and fire up the team.

The older cars are also fun to work on.  Cars now are totally computer controlled and tinkering with the performance means popping out a chip and popping in a  new one and setting some parameters.  Not very fun and not very flexible.

I used to think Delorians were pretty cool.  But as said, they are not too
speedy.   I think for full 'coolness effect"  youd have to upgrade it to look

special at all,  but what the hell...

I strap in, and he makes it out to the main road.  Then he floors the
thing.  It was like being in a Rocket!  I was thrown back and litterally
glued to the seat for several seconds.  Absolutely AWESOME!

He also ichanged the suspension and installed a racing kit which tightens
the frame so that it can hug the road and take corners at SICK speeds.

On the Highway, he opened it up, and on a corner that my car would have
had trouble taking at 45 mph on the Outside lane,  he took the INSIDE lane
at maybe 90mph.  It was Rock solid!  Didnt slide, slip, or show any sign of
loss of control.   The G-forces felt were intense and wicked!  :)

The bad part, is that to get such performance, the suspension was rock
hard.  You felt every little crack and bump in the road.  He said he only
used it for short trips because his ass and back cant take it for too long!
But he also takes it out to a nearby racetrack occasionally.  Must be a
real blast.   Hes driven it to work several times...  but hes gotten into a
bit too much trouble doing that.  If he gets one more speeding ticket, I
believe they will take his license.

If I had a lot of money to burn, I might consider such a thing.  As it
stands, Id rather have a nice comfy van that I could use to haul machines,
wood, people...etc in.

Cant wait for the Electric cars to be affordable.  The acceleration
abilities on those is mostly only limited by battery power/life.   Lightweight
materials will also help too.

Ohh, and finally, if i had to choose between a 2nd car for 'fun' and a
gameroom with more games (such as a nice row of williams pinball machines)
Its more games for me :)

:D  And I hate those giant wings on the back.  I think they look really stupid.

Maybe that was his 'status' thing. Ya, they's ugly.

My brother does this kind of stuff daily in his commute and general driving round SoCal, with his stock Lincoln. He must have good energy flow cos he rarely gets tickets, and never with me. (I make sure his energy's good when I drive with him.) Although, one time at night he hesitated on making a left turn as a bus was coming, then decided to and didn't notice this pimp-lookin black dude crossing the street there. I hollered at my brother, the pimp guy bucked and jumped, and fortunately we also missed the bus...and continued on our way.

Nearby theres a very curvey road that goes up and over the mountains (Angeles Crest highway) which is a shortcut for me to get to certain parts of L.A., so I take it every once in a while and I always have a lot of fun doing it.  All the turns have signs up that say you should go either 25 or 35 (depending on the turn), but I rarely drop below 70 the whole way.  I've only had the tires start to give once when I was powering out of a turn, but once I took my foot off the gas it was fine.  I remember the first time I took that highway I thought I was going pretty quick until a nissan 350z came up on me real fast and passed me, I decided to shadow his speed and learned how fast I could actually take the turns.  Good times.

In N.C. there is a famous road called "The Tail of The Dragon".  It makes 318 turns in 11 miles.  It is a destination for bike and car clubs everywhere.

The delorean club went there a couple years ago.  They wrecked at least 1 delorean.

That would be a really cool thing to eventually do with my project cars.  Convert them to electric.  Probably will become a necessity eventually.

I somewhat agree with HC here... I'm totally indifferent to performance cars.  Give me a good automatic 4 cylinder and I'm cool.

A truck and sheets of MDF are quite the brain teasers too ;)

My girlfriend said she'd buy me anything under $40k. I thought an LS like my brother's, or perhaps the later model of it, would be nice. My brother said instead of spending all that cash, he'd sell me his for five grand. My girlfriend likes to avoid possible repairs on older cars, though.

So she's not aware that you find her smelly....

Quite the reverse. She doesn't wear anything around me. They either get trained or they don't stick around. Actually, my first love wore decent natural oils - you could actually ingest them - but it's been so long I don't know if that'd be okay anymore.

It appears you're experiencing some personal growth this time around.  You're trying to converse more, at times you're even dropping the pretentious palaver, and I see you trying to make wit' da jokes (failing miserably, but hey, if ya wanna make an omelette, ya gotta break some eggs, right?).

There MIGHT be hope for you yet.  Don't get all giddy and start stammering as if a smelly girl is actually talking to you, just relax.

Here's to hoping you don't blow everything by trying to prove just HOW much you've grown

Quite the contrary.  His tummy gets to feeling funny around Cheffo.

My posts are relevant in that they are directed at his own comments and the apparent inability to keep track of what he's prattled on about.  I believe it was appearing as if he was taking his meds regularly, so either he WASN'T, or his tummy gets to feeling funny around me when he knows I'm right, but can't stand the thought of someone so detestable finding out his secrets, and sex talk is his personal Pepto Bismol :dunno

Drew -- you missed the point.

shorty made a sentence!  :applaud:

A real sentence ... with words, punctuation and meaning!

It didn't run on (as he tends to). It didn't split infinitives or mix tenses or subjects. It contained real words and used them properly.

Granted it was only 4 words, but he could have stretched it to 5.

shorty -- if you keep working hard through the summer, I think that we could have you writing at a second grade level by the time the new school year rolls around!

Keep up the good work!

my ability to be so candid as well as shamelessly disregard social moores.

An admitted knowledge of anti-social behavior, and rationalization that equates in your mind to "candid".  Gotcha.

Oh, and it's "mores", Einstein.  Try to be pretentious with people who aren't aware you're full of yourself.  They'll be dumber than the crowd around here who, thanks to you, know about how high you can stack crap. :laugh2:

I'll answer to that if you wish. Um, I typed it...then re-typed it...wasn't sure....---fudgesicle--- it, go with the original. As it's a word I use hardly ---smurfing--- ever, it's gradually fading from my 'working vocabulary', as is the memory of its spelling. Even the treat reference was no help, and no surprise as I haven't had them for probly 20 or more years.

And, you're just a glutton for attention.

Cheffo, I win.  Pay up, I found one ::)

This, from the guy who readily admits he's just throwing out words he rarely uses in an effort to impress.  Color me underwhelmed.

Say, is "glutton" another of those you "rarely use" but throw out there just to see if anyone raises an eyebrow?  Bet that one gets all the ladies hot....as if you cared :laugh2:

You're next, glass-boy ;)

We're not the ones focusing on our "secxluality", are we?

Or perhaps that's not considered "bad taste" in the circles you run with

One of my buddies has a show champion '74 Nova that he does not allow ANYONE to sit in the passenger seat - not even his girlfriend.

Sounds like a knobhead to me.

Nothing wrong with that. if i had the cash I'd have a garage built right next to the master bedroom so i could sleep right next to the car at nights so i knew it was safe.  ;D
