Make a harness for Galaxian? or other options?
« on: May 04, 2007, 01:20:16 pm »
I neew do make/find a harness for an original Galaxian PCB.

Where do I find the 44 pin "edge" connector and would 18-22 Ga wire be suitable?

What is the technical term for the parts that I need?  the plastic piece(card edge connector?) and the little metal pins that you solder the wire to.

Should I just buy one pre-made?  Anyone know a good scource?

Why don't you just buy a Jamma harness and a Galaxian to Jamma connector ?

I thought of that but wouldn't I then have to do something creative with the power?

You can get 44-pin card edge connectors from Bob Roberts (link), either Molex type (crimp-on split pins) or solder tail/eyelet type. You can also get bundles of multicolored wires from him too (link), which is handy. Generally speaking, use 18 gauge for power and ground, 20 or 22 gauge for everything else (20 gauge has more "meat" for crimping terminals to, which is nice).

If you've never ordered from Bob Roberts before, be sure to read his ordering FAQ first (link).

Yeah, Bob is great...

...I'm still not sure if you have to do anything special to run a stock Galaxian board in a Jamma cab? (besides buy an adapter.)

Has anyone with a older PCB found that it's connector is a little two wide to fit into a 44 pin card connector?

I tried placing my PCB in another galaxian cab and found that the PCB would not fit onto the harness.  It's just a little too wide.  The pinouts line up but there is extra blank space at the edges.

I really don't want to risk modifying the original PCB so I was going to make a adapter for it...by picking up a 44 pin card edge connector and widening it slightly.

Any other ideas...I have a feeling that any Galaxian -> Jamma adaptor will have the same issue, i e, not fitting.
