CP Layout submitted for approval
« on: May 01, 2007, 12:40:46 am »

Ok well I think I figured out CP layout.  This gives me 7 buttons for each player (Neo Geo Friendly), each player will have a coin & player button.

3" Trackball in the center, however I chose to minimize buttons and not wire mouse buttons.

Above trackball a 4 way, Arknoid Spinner (Already owned), and 2 buttons for 4way play (spaced a little further apart, similar to 80's games)

Along each side will consist of 2 buttons (both black)
Left side (left flipper, and shazaaam dedicated)
Right side (right flipper, and fire pinball)

I intend on wiring admin buttons to P1 buttons 4-7, making a small direction card for bezel.

The reason I chose to go all blue is because I intend on using standard pushbuttons with LEDs, from examples I've seen blue looks the best in my opinion.

Assuming I follow the plan above, is there anything I left out or should ad?  Being my first MaMe build I don't want to go too detailed, but make it worth the build.

Thanks
Squeeky

At my house, playing Golden Tee, Shuffleshot, and World Class Bowling - both your spinner and 4 way are in the way of the trackball path. Also, where are the pinball nudge buttons? How wide is this control panel? Seems a bit wide for pinball.

I realize your going for symmetry, but anything above the trackball is begging to be hit.

Well I did not plan for pinball nudge buttons, as if the ball is stuck I could set a P1 button for nudge and move my hand back.  I don't really play pinball, but I didn't want to leave out the option.

Control panel size and shape is based off Knievel's which is 34" wide.  The actual CP box is only 33"

The nudge feature is similar to bumping the machine. If I remember correctly, the game offers a few nudge options. Nudge from the right, left and center. Maybe someone more familiar with the button layout can clarify.

As for the spinner and 4 way - they are in the way of the trackball. Only a matter of time before someone cranks their hand on the spinner or 4 way.

Hi there!

And well, I'd add the nudge buttons anyway - you can always use them as admin buttons.. I wouldn't place the shazaaam! button near a flipper button, though.

I used miniature buttons for the nudges on my bartop: big yellow = right flipper, mini yellow = nudge from right and mini blue = front nudge. See the picture ->

All the best :)

It's 34" x 14", I just don't know what to do with the spinner and 4way.  I'm extremely into symmetry so I want it to look good.  As far as the nudge buttons I might add them anyway, whats another $3 when I'm spending $100 on parts for control panel alone.

$100? Your doing pretty good. That looks like a $300 cp to me.

Would you rather have symmetry over gameplay? The defender control panel must be a mess to you. If anything, the 4 way needs to be in the center of the screen since thats how a 4 way was traditionally used (as was the spinner).

As a possibility - consider a swappable panel. You could also use Ultimarc 360's to double as both your 8 way and 4 way and you can eliminate a stick.

You do what you want, I just now that people would physically get hurt with that setup at my house.

If I kept the current setup and just moved the trackball to the lowest point, and 4-way/spinner to highest.  How much distance would one recommend between the trackball and a joy?

The way my friends play? 30" - 36". That trackball can't go to much lower because of the housing.

Do this, build a mockup out of cardboard and see if it works for you.

Hey I love your retro design, that looks really cool. Like soemthing from the sixties. Can you post more pictures of it?

EDIT: Oh wait, didn't realize that was just a bar top. Still cool though.
