FS: Williams Firepower Pinball project [US-TX-Austin]: $225
« on: April 16, 2007, 11:40:01 am »
I recently picked up a complete non-working Firepower.  According to the diagnostic, the game boots (leds flash once and go out) then it locks up in the software. Voltages at certain touch points seem a little low (12v is getting 10.95 and 5v is getting 3.9).  This may be the root of the problem.  There has been some battery damage at some point on the MPU and onto the driver board but seems to have been repaired.  Otherwise, is complete and would make a nice player game.  A couple wear spots in the usual places.

This may exceed my limited electronics experience, so if someone wants to pick up a decent project game, here is your chance, otherwise I'll fiddle with it over the summer and see if I can get her back in order.

Pick up in Round Rock, TX , local delivery available for $40.

Thanks,
John

Good deal, I would buy that if it were local.  The low voltage thing can be addressed by someone with reasonable soldering skills that can put in a rebuild kit.  Rebuild the power board, repin the connectors/replace header pins, and those voltage issues probably go away.  3.9v is definitely way too low and is the likely result of heat damaged or corroded connectors.

You should post the condition of the backglass, too, as that's the real driver value here for a complete pin.  Backglass and playfield.  The partout value is in the boardset.

I have added some pictures.

Backglass has flaking in spots, most likely from rubs against the innards.  Doesn't seem too brittle.  Someone made an attempt to color in the spots  :-\ but you can see what it looks like from the front.  I don't have any backside pics, nor do I have pics of the pcbs.  I can if someone is interested.

Hard to tell about the backglass from those pics but the playfield is in decent shape and will clean up well.

After some fiddling tonight, I just got the game into audits and then into attract mode.  It'll coin-up but won't go into gameplay mode.  I have decided to keep it for now (last night's frustration has turned into excitement).

That sounds a lot like the interboard connector needs to be redone.  Not overly difficult but does take a while.

That is great when you get reved up on a project again.   Take it bit by bit and you will end up with a good pin.   :applaud:

Even better.  What was stopping the game from coming up was a missing ball!  Added a 3rd ball and, although a bit rough, the game played all the way aside from the "voices" missing.  Game still needs work but has gone from bust to boom in 24hrs  :applaud:.  Not a bad deal for $200.
