Altered Beast!!!
« on: March 31, 2007, 11:52:16 am »
hi again people!

ok i have fiddled about with a Crystal Maze SWP for a while and figured i now have enough knowledge of what i want to do to start my prject.

i want to either get and revamp or make from scratch a Altered Beast arcade cabinet.

firstly i have searched high and low on google and found some pictures of the cabinet art and manipulated them and cleaned them up as best as i can and hope they look nearly as good as the real ones which i cannot get!

so its now just the cabinet because my Crystal Maze cab was a MAME anyway so i can transfer it all over and scrap teh cab  :)

so if anyone could maybe send a link to a page of dimentions for the cab or even has a cab for me in bristol that would be great, i did see the dimentions once on the net and swear i downloaded the page but could not find it  :( but hopefully u guy's can help me:)

cheers

As far as I know, Altered Beast was only sold as a kit to convert existing cabinets. Most I played were Williams cabinets (like the pic on KLOV).

If you want a SIMILAR cab to what it might have been like, maybe you could copy the Alien Syndrome cab. I think that was the only System-16 game that had it's own cab.

Crackdown was sold as a dedicated machine a few years after AB, but appears to be a standard Dynamo cut-corner cab.

I'd use whatever cab you could get or find a design you like and build it. By the time you put clean artwork on it, it'll look dedicated anyway.

Altered Beast and Golden Axe were only available as conversion kits. They could be installed in just about any cabinet.

In general though, I installed Altered Beast in Williams cabinets and Golden Axe in Nintendo cabinets.

That looks like a Robotron cab. If you look over at Jakobud.com, probably the closest match to that one is Moon Patrol. Other Williams cabs on there are Defender or Stargate. If you want to see more examples of the Moon Patrol cab, take a look at Joust cabs too. I'm thinking they're the same except width.

Ken--the Williams makes sense, but is there any reason to put Golden Axe in a Nintendo cab? I know most of the Shinobis I played were in Williams cabs.

MOON PATROL is the shape i want! your right in saying it was a robertron thou so thanks for giving me both options.

but the sides on moon patrol are much more square to shape and thats what i was looking for.

any idea's on building one of these things where i would get some blue prints???

thank you again!

I think your enthusiasm is getting the better of you.

As mentioned before, www.jakobud.com is a site that provides free, downloadable plans for cabinets.

While it really doesn't have much to do with the cabinets, you might read a bit about Sega's System-16 hardware that Altered Beast ran on. It was quite popular and Sega used it for many games (such as the ones I've mentioned). A good source of info is here:

http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=701

If you're making this a multi-game cab you might want to widen the cabinet a bit. Most fighting game cabinets were 24-26 inches wide between the sides. You probably want enough room for two people to comfortably play.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I can barely understand what you are saying. Please say that you are not from the US, otherwise you might want to go back to school. ;)

number one i AM a kid! im 15, 16 this year  :)

number two: im excited muched it up will now pay the price of having to either live with a like slightly off colour blob or look around for a 19" PC monitor, it was nearly impossible to find one in the fist place!

so im rounding up all my arcade parts and boxing them ready for my next school term as im going to be using the workshops of my school after school, so i have acess to all the stuff i need to do it

wish me luck and any more advice or points for sorting out my screen???

Brasso on your monitor tube?!?

He read about it elsewhere on the forum.

Wish I would've seen this earlier. This came up about a year ago and the consensus was that a scratch on a crt is gonna stick around. You'll just eat off the antiglare coating by polishing it. If the scratch is deep enough, it can be dangerous.

Anyways, good luck on your project. And make sure to take a little time to type your thoughts out clearly so we can help you better. Spelling shortcuts are okay, I can even sometimes stomach lack of punctuation.

Not just the anti glare, but the anti static coating as well.... anybody who fancies a shock every time they play a game is welcome to try this stupid trick. Whoever gave him this suggestion needs a kick up the rear.

yeh i mean im new to all this stuff, im a computer wiz thou  :) all my family and mates rely on me for that but....

 :laugh2:

Sorry, nothing against you. I always think that's amusing when people say that.

You're going to regret it in a few years. I used to do that and it got to the point where everybody expected me to fix their PC either free or on the cheap (usually free). It's OK when you're still learning, but when you eventually have to make a living, it doesn't work out. I did it for a bit longer on the premise that I would build a "potential job network". I was slow to realize that if any of those ---uvulas--- actually knew someone that could land me a job they wouldn't be coming to me for PC work, they'd be going to them. :banghead:

It's a bit like moving to Hollywood in the hopes you can land that acting job or to get your killer movie script accepted. People have done it, but not enough to make the effort really worth while.

Nowadays, when most people ask me to fix their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, I tell them I don't work on anything other than CP/M.

ummm there are idiots taht abuse my 'talent' LOL but i don't mind as long as im increasing my knowledge.

and  the next one yeh we all yer buts no buts down y'ere!!!!

back to subject in hand!

im using a very very old PC for my arcade machine, this is because it has ISA slots and therefore can support my very old ISA soundcard which i must say is amazing for all the old DOS games.

Duke Nukem 3D, Stonekeep, and a few other classics.

and the point is i just decided to take the fan off the processor for some reason and now when u first turn teh computer on it sort of makes a very loud noise! it quiets down after a while but i just wonder why it does this????

Dead power supply fan bearings...... I have one that does that, and has been doing it for two years. The only reason I haven't fixed it is because I just can't be bothered. You could strip it down and change the fan or fans out in the power supply and it will shut up.

NO! if your processor was designed to run with a fan then it needs it to keep cool....  Only really the P2 and earlier without a fan installed at the design stage are OK to run without one.

You can easily fudge a processor fan onto most heat syncs.... Have you got a good picture of the fan type??

You should be able to get a small 12V fan and just figure out how to screw it on there.

BTW.. I'm not too far away from you... Down in Cornwall.

ROFL  :laugh2: Most arcades are like that now I'm afraid to say..... It's going to be a very long time before current games are emulated on a PC.  Actually that may be a little wrong to say that, because most current arcade machines actually are PC's..... It'd only require the software "cracking" to get it run on a machine at home.

HOTD isn't really high tech at all.... HOTD1 and 2 run on quite primative SEGA hardware.

yeh tahts what i thought B&Q are pants everything is OTT on the prices i mean if i used B&Q just to get 2 sides your looking at £70 then with all teh base wood and internal shelf and back etc your going to be up near £200 !!!

in kingswood//on the outskirts theres a wood place been in there a few times with my dad, i know they do beading skirting etc but not sure about big sheets

hummm wil have to investigate ... it anoyes me this technology technician was ment to be getting on the phone for me but been waiting easily a month now he keeps making excuses ARGHH and he recons he could get it cheaper than taht as well !

can you still get 3/4" wood?

Yes David.... I've been a bit busy for the last couple of weeks.... I'll sort your artwork and mail it to you later tonight.

As for your MDF..... You won't get 3/4" easily or cheaply anywhere in the UK. The 18mm is the closest you will be able to get. Try small builders merchants that deal in timber, they will usually have it for half the price that B&Q do it for.  It is in fact "18mm nominal" which means it can vary between about 17mm and 19mm thick.  It's exactly what you would get if you bought 3/4".  1mm will make no difference at all to your cabinet. and the T-Molding fits it fine.

If I understand your goal there.

That Tiny (Is that a generic brand, like GQ?)PC has nearly everything you need to install it in your AB cab. Don't use the power supply from Crystal Maze with it, you'll only experience heartache. Keep it for another project or sell it off, whatever you want to do.

You can leave the PC as-is and install. Locate a KeyWiz or IPAC2 and wire it into your buttons/joystick. I don't remember if you're using an arcade monitor or using a PC monitor or TV. Depending on the monitor you have and the Video card currently in your possession, you have several choices before you.

Terribly sorry to hear your PC crashed. My main PC has been dead for months. To add insult to injury, I was using a non-mainstream file system that now has a questionable future. So once I get my PC back, I have to go through the very tedious process of manually copying every file to a more mainstream file system and still preserve all the important bits of information relating to those files. In the mean time, if I reallly need to access something, I have to use my laptop and jury rig the drive to it. An immense mess of wires.

Anyhow, I digress. This is a good example to the value of backing up your data. Especially important stuff.

Second, in many situations, the actual data from a... PC crash is recoverable. As long as you didn't reinstall your operating system, you can utilize a number of tools to, at the very minimum, recover your project. If you already reinstalled... then you're back to the drawing board. :(

It's standard for "worst case scenarios" to simply go in and wipe everything out and start over fresh. One of the driving reasons why I went out and bought a second hard drive. If you make it a habit to always put your data on the second drive, it has a far better chance of surviving a meltdown. It's only until recently that I grew lazy and opted not to create a similar configuration with the laptop. I suppose I'll pay for that one day.  ::)

I did, however, buy an external drive enclosure and use it to dump ridiculously large files.

Take it from someone whose tried all sorts of backup methods. Save up a little cash and buy a second hard drive. To make things simpler, buy an external USB 2 drive.

It's probably not any consolation, but I used to get BSoD's all the time. During the Windows 95/98 years I was writing some custom software for myself involving some convoluted memory management and I got an error screen that looked like the one below. Wasn't fun trying to figure that one out.

Even in the U.S. 3/4" sheet wood refers to nominal measurements. In reality, 3/4" wood is rarely ever truly 3/4" it's probably closer to 23/32" which is somewhere between 18mm and 19mm. For the purposes of building a cabinet, I believe 18mm is the correct sheet to use. You'll have to compensate in some of your measurements.

What the hell language are you speaking?!?

I used to moderate a vide game forum and I used to deal with that all the time. Just pick out what you actually understand and ignore the rest.

I already answered this for you, in fact so did several other people.  Try reading the replies you get.

3/4" T-Molding is fine on 18mm MDF.

BTW... did you get the artwork I sent you. You never replied, so I can only assume that you didn't.

If all you are working with is a pentium 2, here is the best way to fix it:

1) take sledgehammer to existing mobo
2) After feeling better, throw pieces in garbage
3) Go to nearest resell shop and buy ENTIRE pentium 2 pc for next to nothing
4) come home
5) install your software and be done

No problem:
Insert the following addendum steps after sledgehammering as follows:
1a) Use soldering iron, pliers, and other specialty tools to reduce entire board to its elemental components.
1b) take separated piles to recycling plant.

The problem is it's a DELL.

For some years (not sure if yours falls in this range) DELL used a proprietary power supply that was not compatible with standard PSU's. In fact, plugging in a standard ATX power supply resulted in a dead motherboard, period. As far as I know, DELL motherboards are usually still are not compatible with ATX supplies, but the incompatibility is not as risky or dangerous. It is a nightmare working with these boards.

You see no pins for a power button for the exact same reason. DELL typically uses a proprietary daughter board that houses lights, power and reset with a funky cable. It is not compatible with standard ATX case wiring. You might find the daughter card on eBay.

I'm all for the preservation of hardware, but DELL's fall into a rare class of hardware I would rather see destroyed than preserved. The level of proprietary hardware manufactures like DELL, Compaq, and others employ often border on insane and maddening. If you come across their parts, scavange what you can, destroy the rest, then buy a complete PC on the cheap. Or better yet, put one together using standard components.

Best of luck with your project David!

After reading your plans, I have some suggestions.  You stated:

"One thing I will have to incorporate into my design will be a little control strip on the front of the cabinet that holds, Light switch, PC power button, PC reset button, Volume switch. I will do this because I want to emulate a real arcade machine as much as possible..."

A real arcade machine doesn't have a control strip on the front, and yours does not have to either.  Search through these forums for the Bits Ltd. strip, or "one button solution".  The Bits Ltd. strip is made in UK I believe, so you should have no trouble finding that.  You'll also find plans to add a relay to a power strip and effectively end up with the same thing.  One switch powers up everything in your cab-PC, Lights, Speakers, and Monitor.  Mount your switch on the top or back of the cab where it belongs, and follow the other suggestions you'll find in here to auto load your front end and hide windows, and you will be very very close to a "real arcade" machine.

The second suggestion I have is for you to pick up a copy of Saints book to assist you in your research.  You mentioned using the internet and picking peoples brains, but having the book will round out your research, provide you loads of information on the hows & whys + some history, and will give you another source to add to your bibliography.

Again, good luck, and keep studying here too.

thanks a lot Disturbed013

thanks for taking time out to have a little read that means a lot to me.

saints book?? is taht a book you buy and where from?

yeh that book will really help becuase the internet is very clicky when you as for something and it gives you something else, at least with a dedicated book you know you will get pure useful facts.

i might pop down the libary and get out some games history books and even arcade history if they do them

thanks again
