I know it's anal: multiple credits when pressing coin button
« on: March 27, 2007, 07:21:35 pm »
I know this may be minor and fussy, but when we are playing Joust, if I hit the p2 coin button, or insert a quarter--either way-- it enters a credit of 4 coins. p1 coin button and coin door works fine: one quarter per press. Is this just a glitch with Joust? I can't find any control over this in the config menus. Other games aren't doing this. I've already trashed the Joust config files and restarted to no avail. It just bugs the hell outta me every time we play Joust with 2 players and the coin button does that.  :D

No solution for you, but in case it makes you feel any better I just confirmed it happens for me too.  Same thing on Robotron.  Maybe a Williams thing???

Funny, I just noticed that last night as well.

I haven't tried yet, but within MAME you should be able to just remap (for the problem games only) both coin buttons to the P1 coin, and set the P2 coin to nothing (or keypress only).

Then both buttons will trigger the P1 coin.

It gives 4 credits because p2 coin is for the dollar slot on the 3 slot Williams door.

Try this to change it to one credit

Start Joust or any other Williams game.
Hold F1 down and hit F2 twice
You'll be in the menu
Go to Pricing Selection - Change to 0
Then change Center Slot to 1
Hit F2 to exit.

That's funny I didn't notice this same thing on other Williams games. Thanks for the advice. I will give it a spin tonight and see if I can "fix" Joust.

I've wondered about this before as well. I have a Robotron machine at home and in the config you can set up multipliers (unless it was just a dream). Such as

2 quarters = 1 play
4 quarters = 1 play

1 quarter = 2 plays
1 quarter = 4 plays

I haven't looked at this in years and can't double check this since my Robotron is on the blink. But I'm pretty sure it worked like this and may be the reason why the port to Mame is causing this.

Anyways, as a kid I never would have even considered complaining about it. 1 quarter 4 plays.  :woot

Link

Basically, with the Williams games, it supports three coin inputs.  Mame interpets slot 2 (usually inputted as '6') as the 'center' slot, not the right.  It's set by default to four credits per coin.  You can go in and flip the DIPs to change this.

Edit: I see it's already been explained.  Should have read the rest of the thread.

I have something similar happening on my Ikari Warriors machine (not MAME, actual hardware), and obviously the Williams dollar slot thing doesn't explain this one. Coin slot 1 gives 1 credit per coin like it should, while coin slot 2 gives 6 (!) credits per coin. I could fix it by wiring the slot 2 coin switch in parallel with the slot 1 coin switch, but I'm kind of curious what the problem is.
