Silly Button Question
« on: March 27, 2007, 04:19:41 pm »
I have a Donkey Kong Jr cabinet I am putting a 48-in-1 board in to.  Some of the games require 2 buttons but I don't want to alter the CP of the DK Jr.

Can I map 2 functions to the same button?  For example,  can I make the P1 button both P1 and Button 2?   If I do this and the board is set for for free play is it going to somehow register the P1 button over and over as I press the button while playing a 2 button game?

My thinking is that once in a game,  the P1 button doesn't do anything until the game is over anyway so it shouldn't make a difference?

I am keeping the DK Jr. 4-way stick anyways so I suppose I should check to see how many 4-way games use a 2nd button on this board (probably none)...so this question then becomes unnecessary anyway.

You could, although the layout would be awkward - and I'd probably put it on P2 instead.  Just remember that the P1 & P2 buttons are your save buttons in programming mode as well, so don't know if this would cause a problem.  You COULD always just tie both s1 & s2 inputs to the same button, then they would do both options at once.  Wouldn't matter in games like Xevious as you have unlimited bombs, but you'd run out of warps right away in Moon Cresta and don't know how the fast/slow in Qix would be affected.

I've added a 2nd button to these games before, and they look fine as long as you match the original button in color.  If it bothers you that much, do one of two things, either add a floor pedal for the 2nd button that you can stick inside the coin door when you're not using it, or don't play any of the 2 button games.  There's only 5 or so anyway....

Perhaps you could put a toggle switch to send the P1 button to either player start or B2.

It works fine in MAME, http://www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/encoder/startkey.htm, don't know how it will do with actual hardware.
