Silly wiring question
« on: April 11, 2003, 02:05:52 am »
Last time I wired my buttons, i ended up with sore hands and neck.

OK, OK, I'm exaggerating, but seriously:  Is there an easier way to wire all the 'grounds'? I'm sure there has to be a better way than making a cable from ground to ground.  The jey here, is that it needs to be insulated  from A to B, so simply running a bare wire won't do the trick.

Someone please tell me there is a better way!

Why does it have to be insulated? One or two of my arcade games have a bare wire as the ground that goes from switch to switch and it works just fine.

If it is a bare wire, you risk it touching non-ground terminals.  no?

Well, whenever I saw it that way it was always stiff wire that they did it with. It certainly didn't have any room to move around or anything.

I also purchased a game at an auction that had unshielded wire for the ground.

It is a very shoddy way to do it though!

You are correct in the fact that is is very easy to cause a ground fault with this setup. The easiest way to wire a Cp is still daisy chaining the ground.( or buy a prewired Jamma CP)

Just get a good tool to crimp and strip wires (all in one), and everything goes much easier! :)

Is it possible to use quick disconnects to connect all the 'ground' terminals of buttons/joys?   I only see how you can make a connection between 2, but then youre screwed.  no?

No, just put 2 wires into 1 connector to form a chain.

Get one of those nice spring-loaded automatic wire strippers -- makes a world of difference... saved my hands a lot of pain.

Then all you have to do is mash the connectors on with the crimper -- which I think is actually kind of fun -- I like the crunching sound it makes.  ;D

i got a hold of quick disconnects that have a female plug (like you would find on a microswitch) piggybacked on the end of a normal plug.. so i just make ground wires with a normal quick disconnect on one endand a male/female disconnect on the other...

seems to work okay... not sure how happy i am with it or not (they look a bit unruly once its done, but i think it makes it much easier to rewire or fix something if you get a broken wire.. )  just taste i spose
