What is your white whale?
« on: March 25, 2007, 02:39:37 pm »
Just taking a little poll here. I'd be interested in knowing what everyone's white whale/dream machine/unattainable cab is. Any stories about actually getting your dream machine certainly welcome! :)

I am actualy on a trail currently on a VERY nice one.....can't tell you what yet though :D

Apart from that.....Puck Man ?
Q*bert, Ms.Pac Man because I played those SOOOO much in the early 80's....
Robotron

And of course, any vector I don't really care which.

All of these are rare here. It hurt me to see two dead Ms.Pac Man's in an amusement park while on holiday in the US. I wish I could have made an offer and take them back home.....o well......I should not be complaining, I've been very lucky last couple of months, getting a Galaxian, a Mario Bros (in red !), and a Centipede....

My dream/white whale would have to be an original dedicated Tron cab. Second would be a Tempest.

What must you keep people in suspense??? ;)
And btw, your Galaxian is looking awesome!

Yea,  I'm a sucker for early 80s games also...I think that period was the most time I spent in an arcade (and when arcades were most accessible).

From all the requests people come into my shop and ask for.....

Under 25:  Any head-to-head fighter like MK3, Tekken, etc.

Women:  Any Pac-title, usually in a cocktail

Casual arcaders:  Galaga, any Pac, Centipede, Defender, Asteroids, etc.

Software programmers:  Discs of Tron, Sinistar, Dragon's Lair, or any other incredibly hard to find dedicated game.

Me?  I want a Bride of Pinbot pinball and a DKjr.  Got the DKjr boardset, and just need a cab to put it in.

Not really rare, I see them from time to time, just can't afford one yet, but I've always wanted the sitdown Star Trek ( http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=S&game_id=9770 ) Many fond memories of wasted money in that thing for some reason...
Alos on my list: Thayers Quest, and environmental DOT (of course)

Modessitt-that's a pretty interesting breakdown of wants-I'd add centipede for women also.

Angry_Radish-I remember sitting in the captain's chair playing Star Trek and thinking it was so futuristic looking and cool...um...yea....
If I got that, I'd have to add those space egg chairs to complete the look.  ;)

Angry Radish - Believe it or not we're going to be converting a Star Trek sit-down into a multi-game unit for a guy who's a Star Trek nut.  He brought us the cab and it had been completely stripped but has all the cosmetic pieces.  Just don't know where to mount a joystick and buttons - perhaps the joystick on one armrest and the buttons on the other?

Am_Monkee - Yeah, women like Centipede, probably because it was the first game designed by a woman.

Leapinlew - if you can get to Austin, Tx, we're gonna give away a free Firepower (and Firepower II) pinball that probably are missing their boards, legs, and playfield glass.  My boss doesn't think their worth restoring.  Don't know what shape the playfields are in, but thought you'd like to know.

Texasmame - my boss probably wants way too much for it but we've got a dedicated Defender cocktail with the 13" monitor.  He sells for dealer retail but it will be completely working when you get it.  You may be able to contact him to see what he would sell it for as-is if you wanted to do you're own work....

Now would be the time for someone to tell me they got a Bride of Pinbot that doesn't work and only want $100 for...   :laugh2:

Journey upright cabinet!!!

Beautiful Cabinet... cool music... so so game... did I mention Beautiful Cabinet???

Shoot, I would build a replica if I had the measurements...

Only seen one Journey machine ever in my life... Paddock Mall in Ocala FL... early 80s...

Star Trek in an Asteroids cabinets looks really cool... methinks it looks cooler than the original Star Trek upright cabinet...

South Park Pinball with cursing enabled... ;D  There was one of these in the commons area where I went to college, I got really good at it...SPSU...late 90s

At one point, I would have said a Joust cocktail, then I found one locally, then another and another (didn't buy the last two, though).

I think of my remaining dream machines, my only white whales are a Star Wars cockpit and a Sinistar cockpit.

Everything else is just expensive or I don't want it enough (or both). Cash flow could alleviate those problems, though.

Cheers.

Had one many years ago, and then I sold it because I am an idiot.

Good luck.

A much bigger house so I can have a place to put everything.

Not just for the arcade machines, but the wood shop, the craft shop, the glass shop (We have a kiln that's been sitting in the middle of the living room since December), the computer shop (my server has been gutted and homeless since November), a real office,  and a place to put two cars.  :dizzy:

If we're just talking arcades, then I guess a fully functional Tempest cab (sorry for the cliche) would be my thing and an arcade cab contemporary enough looking and plays Bubble Bobble that I can sneak one into the living room. Move that ---smurfing--- kiln out of there. I'm thinking one of Knievals designs would inspire her to accept it.

I would kill to get my hands on a Black Night pinball machine

I have one of those, and the Star Wars mentioned a couple of times above, both close to working but future projects in the queue.

My white whale is probably the Star Wars cockpit (mine is a water damaged upright), a real Major Havoc, or a Discs of Tron Environmental.  I actually just got my white whale pin, Fathom, working and in need of a good shopping.

I actually just got my white whale pin, Fathom, working and in need of a good shopping.

I was at the Texas Pinball Festival over the weekend and I saw some of the repro Fathom playfields. They looked great. Gene brought two of his completed Big Bang Bar pins (they were turned on but not available for play)

I'd recommend getting one before they are sold out. Then you can put it in later. I've got some tips on doing that. ;)

I personally have no white whale pin or vid.
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Haven't the Fathom playfields been sold out for a long time already?  People have been flipping them for nearly twice the original price.

Even though they're common, I can't get a hold of a good (or better) Ms. Pac-Man.

Others I'm trying to find:
-Star Wars (upright or cockpit)
-Tempest
-Major Havoc
-Donkey Kong
-House of the Dead II

Some of those I've found, but the asking price has been outrageous and prohibitive.

Haven't the Fathom playfields been sold out for a long time already?  People have been flipping them for nearly twice the original price.

Maybe what I saw was the Centaur fields. Shows what little I know about these repros.

Hmmm.... I don't really have a white whale as far as cabs go because I'll just build a replica if I really want one.  My white whale is definitely a dedicated game room/home theater.  The house I live in isn't big enough for one and the basement is unfinishable (very low ceilings).  Whenever we decide to move, one of the conditions to buying a new place is that it has to have a HUGE basement that I can convert into an arcade/bar/home theater.

I envision a mini bar in a corner with arcade machines on a wall on one side and a shuffleboard table and a pool table in the middle of the floor and on the other side a huge HD projection screen with a curved leather couch that has recliner seats on the ends, maybe a popcorn cart in the corner.... framed movie posters on the wall, remote controlled lighting, etc.

I've had the plans laid out in my head for quite some time - I'm hoping I can get an unfinished basement that I can convert myself.  It will be expensive but it's really my onlu hobby - I don't like cars or anything that's really expensive to build/restore.

I think those are sold out, too, but there's an easy way to tell.  Fathom is very blue.  Centaur is very black.

Black Knight pinball.  Never had one of these in the comic store I worked at, so we were always skipping across to the arcade down the street to play.

Arcade-wise, Tron.

Funnily enough, as I thought about it, I'd rather have BK than Tron...

I would kill to get my hands on a Black Night pinball machine

One just sold on Ebay in really good condition for around $750. It was about 4 blocks away from my house.  ;D

On the white whale thing... DOT Environmental, Star Wars cockpit, X-Men 6 player (I love that huge ugly beast)

Starwars cockpit version or a Space Harrier w/ motion base.

A Cyclone or Comet pin in good shape would be great as well.  Hard to find one that hasn't been played half through the wood table.

Cab: Gravitar - Saw a near perfect (looking) one about half a year ago on ebay. But it was in Indiana.

Pin: Black Hole - About a month ago there was one for sale about 15 miles from me. I had the money for it, but I had been saving forever for my camera, so I kept to my goal. But there was wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I have a Black Knight. Got it on FreeCycle for free. I but free is not necessarily free. I have put probably 150 plus countless hours working on it. BTW, that was not a complaint at all, I have had a great time bring it back to life. Just looking for 1 plastic, a better back glass (mine is grody). Need to fix 1 audio issue, and 1 column of lighting. But the playfield is frakin' awesome and it plays great.

I want Pixelhugger's cab :P (when it's finished that is  :laugh2:)

No doubt. But I forgot that I bought the back glass for $50, but still $200 isn't too bad. The BG is kinda sad. Someone spray painted the backside black. I am in no position to pay $300 for a good BG.

Are you saying it's for sale, or just sharing that a member has one?

I spent a vast amount of cash on PinBot $0.25 at a time, back in the day. I'd like to play a few million games on one in the comfort of my gameroom. I'll probably skip the quarters this go-around. ;)

The biggest thing working against me is lack of space. So right now I'm trying to keep my list attainable. Currently on my short list:

Williams cab to convert to Shinobi - Just like I used to play.
Neo-Geo 4-slot or 6-slot. Great games, only one cab.
I'd love to get a pin someday, but the amount of work and money that I see going into these scares me.

I wonder how you identify an African Green Parrot as the one that was stolen. Maybe by it's vocabulary?Does it say "F*** the Nazis"?

Then again, maybe you're thinking of R360. You can buy one here for $18,500:

If I had enough room for that, I'd probably convert my garage to Ridge Racer Full-Scale.

For my game room I have a pool / air hockey table, electronic dartboard and my FrankenMAME.  I guess that my white whales would be a ROBOTRON followed by a Sinistar sit down cab then maybe an Elvis Pinball.  I'd also like to replace the current pool table with a slate model and add a poker table top to it.

I'd settle for a Williams sextuplet of brand spanking new machines hot of the press to go with my Williams arcade classics CD. Or I'd even settle for the consolidated version.

Robotron
Defender
Startgate
Joust
Sinistar
Bubbles

I never understood why all the multiwilliams crap included Sinistar. It is a verticle game, while the rest are horizontal.  :dunno

Sinistar is also used a 49-way stick.  Not as good on a 8-way.

Ooooowwwwww how could I forget it in my White Whale dreamlist:

Samba D'Amigo !!!!!

http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9412

Was this ever shipped to Europe ?

Star Wars (Cockpit) seems to be another favorite. I think the side-art of the upright is a lot more impressive than that of the cockpit (why did they go with a different design?) but the cockpit of course is a great looking cab. What do others feel make this one stand out ? ANd a question to boot, is that Star Wars sign on the back lit-up like a marquee ?

Thanks....

Don't forget I said all six which means the controls and screen orientation would be exact. The all in one is just a lesser dream during a hazy short nap. So don't go pooping on my dream.  ;)

No pooping meant. I myself, would love to have them all. I was just making a side comment on the MultiWilliams stuff.

Another one I wouldn't mind owning just because it looked cool was Time Traveler by Sega.  The game wasn't the fun, but it sure was neat when it first hit the arcades.

The ultimate white whale:

enough money to buy all the damn games I see for sale around the country (like the Red Baron cockpit on Ebay right now), a place to put them without cluttering up the house, and a wife who understands why her husband doesn't want to "grow up".....  (well, guess I've got that last one, as long as I don't do the 2nd one....)

An arcade back in the day had a rotating afterburner cockpit game where it moved as you flew.  Seemed really awesome when I was young, so would love to try it again.

A PAIR of those sold locally at auction for C$50 (one working, one for parts) ... nobody wanted to move the bloody things. Guy turned around and sold the working one on eBay for C$940.

 :dunno

Heh.  I sold a PAIR of those things to another member here a while back.  Moving one of those things is the second worst arcade-related task there is.

Thus far for me, by a longshot, was dropping a $2400 game and seeing the cabinet crack/hearing shattering glass.

Just curious ChadTower. How did you react?

I know I would have seen white (like that explosion of white pain you get when you violently stub your toe), fell flapping to the floor like a fish freshly out of water and start screaming new and improved obscenities never before heard by mankind.

I did it at my workplace after having won the machine at auction (Twilight Zone).  Luckily I was alone in the room, so while I was very very quiet, I did just sit there for a couple minutes contemplating the stupidity of my existence.  It was a Douglas Adams moment for sure.

After evaluation, only one corner was structurally damaged and was repairable without detection from the outside, and the "glass" sound was actually the cabinet striking the piled up legs on the ground.  No glass had actually broken, not that that really matters in a modern pin, but the sound... it was like slapped hit in the face with a steaming bag of my own idiocy.

ChadTower,

So it sounds like you were able to fix it though, right? Don't worry, I've got a little story that will make you feel better about anything stupid you've ever done.

My uncle had a friend that used to run an arcade distribution company in the early '80s until the middle of the '90s. During that time there were a few machines he left boxed up and never sold or never got out to a location. Anyway, about 10 years ago, when my uncle was diagnosed with cancer, his friend gave him a NEVER PLAYED Pinbot and Missle Command. They were beautiful. Well, when my uncle died, a few years passed and neither had been played for quite some time. My aunt remarried, and eventually sold the two machines FOR $100 TOGETHER. When I visited and saw that the machines were gone, my stomach dropped. When she told me the story I almost fainted.

To think that they could have been mine if I only knew that she was planning to unload them.

In the scheme of things VV Cephei is just a grain of sand compared to the vastness of the entire stew we call the universe.

1.6 Billion Km in diameter.  :o

So to sum it up, does it really matter that you dropped your machine.  :)

Dropping a game can give you a heart attack, for sure.

I had a 1952 Seeburg jukebox decide to break a wheel and try to fall off my lift gate just as I was starting to lower it.  This juke has a TON of glass and my arcade life flashed before my eyes.  Quickly jumped in front of it to bear hug it but it was heavy and coming off for sure.  Ended up taking it completely to the ground with me under it, then gently lowering onto its side on the concrete.  Amazingly, no damage to the jukebox (which was good since it wasn't mine) but did end up with a long scratch down my forearm.

Ha, I did that once with a 100 year old upright piano... from a high liftgate, too.  Never in my life have I been so glad to have spent years as a powerlifter in a crouch with way too much weight to support from above.  It probably saved me from serious injury and definitely saved the piano from getting trashed.
