1 1/8 Drill bit throught Metal CP??...
« on: March 10, 2007, 09:38:19 pm »
hey guys
here's my story
I got a dedicated Virtua fighter cabinet in good shape.
But i want to make it 6 buttons ...
Cause im getting an other VF 1 dedicated in Better shape.. (yay!) :)

the setup is not that complicated to put extra buttons they would be curved a little but still good
i could wire it to jamma & use it as a 6 button jamma cab

but my concern is I got a 1 1/8 Drill bit
I did CP in Wood...

but im not sure if It can go trhought metal... i never tryed before
since i will have  6 holes to make i wanna be sure.... that it will work....

Im using a electric battery powered drill it's very strong .

thanks!!!

Drill a small pilot hole, then use a hole saw to cut the holes, make sure you get a carbide-tipped hole saw, or get a cheap one that you don't care whether it gets destroyed. :)

You really should use a Greenlee punch, depending on the thickness of your control panel. Check this out:

thickness

hmm not sure

it's a original virtua fighter         US cabinet...

It's like drilling any metal base control panel like a streetfighter i presume...

the mouser you showed me Seems pricy a little i won't be doing this anytime soon . it's only for this cab.

Harbor Freight has a really good punchout kit for $15.  It does a clean job and is a lot easier than trying to drill metal.  It punched through my Galaxian panel fine - somebody already mangled it with a hack saw so I wanted to clean up the edges.  It goes through pretty thick pieces as well, I think around 1/8"  http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91201

I used a dremel rotary to cut the metal holes for my CP. Worked great.

You mean that i shouldn't be twisting the hole saw by hand?

Awww man - I could have had my cp done way faster!

I hope it won't mess up the Overlay on the cp when the drill twist it i hole it will only do the hole it has to do
thanks guys!

**Question #2 ****
Ahhh! i don't want to start an other topic...
I want to fit a 17 '' monitor in a tiny cabaret cabinet
but there is an angle so i dunno how i should put it still?
should i do a frame? (still it won't be bolted..)

I wouldn't risk it. The one time I tried drilling a hole out of my overlay, the teeth caught the paper and ripped it. If it's glued down - you might be ok.

Start another topic.  ;)

You'll want to secure the monitor somehow. I've seen everything from straps (like cargo straps for luggage), to square tube metal cut to fit the monitor.

The Hole Saw is your friend!  Just make sure that you purchase an arbor (the center piece) with a shaft at the max size of your drill.  Do not make the mistake of purchasing a 1/2" arbor only to find your drill will accept 3/8" maximum.

Also,  unless your cordless drill is an 18v,  chances are SLIM it will have enough power to go through the metal...so borrow a corded one or buy one (in which case I highly recommend you buy a 1/2" corded drill as you WILL come across 1/2" shafts from time to time and will be kicking yourself in the ass if you buy a 3/8" drill).

The key to making it through the CP is SPEED.  Attack the CP from the FRONT at a high rpm...slowly giving pressure...it will cut through like butter...

The meta it self takes a bit of pressure...but it's no problem (as long as you get a quality hole saw).  Expect to pay around $30-$40 for the arbor and a QUALITY hole saw (at least in the US).  The ones in Home Depot to look at are the ORANGE colored hole saws...again, make sure you get an arbor that will FIT the hole saw bit because it TOO has different sizes (another mistake I made).

When you buy your holesaw, make sure to get a BI-METAL holesaw. Those are made for cutting metal or wood or whatever...
