I just thought that was a bit misleading and a lot hilarious.

This is how I see it, most of the people here who have built cabs have built something of quality. Perhaps worth paying $3k for if they where to sell it.

Lets say this is a site of great chefs and each of us are showing off our awesome recipies, crown rack of lamb, sirloin steak and the like. Then some guy comes along to show off a hot dog he cooked. Well the rest of us can't help but laugh at the guy. Sure the hot dog may be good and tasty but its still just a hot dog compared to our crown rack of lamb. Worst part is he expects someone to pay the same price as the sirloin steak.

Your analogy stinks. Worst one ever.
You ever been to a baseball game? You ever eat a hot dog there? You ever pay for it?
Furthermore - some people don't like lamb.

I'll say this efjayel, I respect that guys cab a hell of a lot more than I respect your drawings of a cab. But if you built a cab tomorrow, and it was a total piece of crap. I'd encourage you and offer tips if you asked for them.

I don't want to be on the side of defending that guy. But I'm not going to participate in making fun of a fellow "cabinet" building. You want to make fun of ultracade? I'm on board with that. At least you've built cabinets and you know whats going on. I was more pissy with the guys on here slamming someone elses work while they've never built anything themselves.

I agree in the fact that if you know whats going on, you wouldn't spend that kind of money on his machine. But, that happens everyday - people overpay all the time.

I've seen cabinets that were just as bad as his (in my opinion) sell at auctions for over $1,500. Maybe thats where he got his idea from.

I actually kind of like the setup okay.  I don't know if that is a black cloth or whatnot.  I would prolly ditch that and put a sheet of 3/4 white pine or whatever he was using in place of the black sheet.  Then I would encase his arcade monitor something a little more sturdy.  Make sure that thing doesn't fall on a pet and shock them.  But ehhhhh well.....Atleast he prolly liked it for a little while.

Well his design to me is like one of those cabs that have a big stand for the control panel and computer to go into with the coin door underneath and about 2-3 ft back is the TV/Arcade Monitor enclosed in its own stand.  It is like one of those style.  I think someone on here has a Blue one like that.  I can't remember who has one built.  Leapin do you have a cap like that?  Someone on here does.  It is blue-ish mabe black.  You guys know the cabs I mean.  Kind of like a HOTD2 or 3 style cab.  Controls in the front and space between the TV and control panel.

I think originally he was going for that look, but maybe he lost interest in finishing it up to the best of his ability.  I stand with Leapin on this matter though.  Don't diss the guy.  You people don't know him show him some love.

See now that is what I am talking about.  That analogy is pretty good right there.  I have had rack of lamb myself and it wasn't enough meat on there.  Steak is better, but a hot dog with some good sweet relish.  Well that's some good stuff!

And the best part is you did it without gutting that HP Palm thingie.

How, exactly, is the joystick connected and constructed? I see you have two microswitches across that rod, but how did you get the stick to work with that?

I made this a few years ago. See the project annoumncement thread Pocket Galaga finally coming along for more info.

The joystick is actually a nail between 2 microswitches (and some wood to keep it all in place) The iPAQ is connected to the control panel with a hacked game controller.

I have a scratch built mame cab, which I consider of moderate quality, and I consider it to be above average compared to most project cabs that I've seen posted online..... and still, if you find the market where mame cabs sell for $3000.... and maybe mine will fetch half of that, you let me know.

Oh, and I stand behind the argument that even they guy with the shittiest attempt at a cabinet deserves the respect due to at least making an attempt, because what he learned doing it will help improve the next attempt.

....but I also see that it's common to loose the respect of others for not being aware of how good or bad your abilities are in the eyes of others.  In this situation I encourage everyone to take the high road and just let the victim continue on his way.  It's obvious that he's out to lunch.  You gain nothing by pointing and laughing.  Think about it.  Do you do it because it makes you feel good about yourself, because it highlights that you're better than someone else or that you know something that they don't?  This guy's status is completely obvious to everyone in the literate audience.  Now ask yourself, does your ability to point out the obvious really make you look better in the eyes of the literate audience?

Make the world a better place.  Take the high road.,

Go check out an auction and you'll see all kinds of things.  I've seen crappy mame machines sell for over $1,500.

Sure, I could mention how it has a bumper sticker for a marquee, or that it's based on a ridiculous theme, or how unstable the control panel must be on those casters, or how cruddy the coin door is, or how 1980's the knotty pine look is, or even how the bezel looks like contruction paper.

If I were mean, I would also ask what kind of man builds a cabinet out of a dresser? I might mention something about a man who's wife wears the pants and wouldn't let him have an arcade so he has to sneak one in his house.

I might even suggest that the theme is an overcompensation and trying to be manly. Possibly like an arcade cabinet in drag.

If I were not such a nice person - I'd ask if it makes that sound transformers made when it switches from armoire to cabinet. It's more than meets the eye.

It was fun the first time around. This cabinet is on it's second thread. The guy makes a bad cabinet, and he gets harassed by some of the noobs on this board. They sent him some messages and links to the thread here.

He ended his auction and then posted it on craigslist. They flagged it and had it removed. For gods sake - let the dude sell his crap and lets move on.

Pretty soon - people are going to put 2 and 2 together and know it was my cabinet.

The addition of bezel art would improve the continuity between the marquee and the CP.

The non constructive feedback that comes to mind:
I assume that it is successfull ergonomically as an arcade cabinet.  As a piece of furniture it's aesthetically successful (if you like the style) but a practical nightmare as arcade cabinets tend to be.  I don't like the furniture style, but as you said it was built to spec.  

I think it's an apreciable feat to try and make a cabinet which disapears when not in use.  It must be extremely difficult to do from a design and construction point of view but it's a bit of a self defeating exercise.

you are right on. i would not have that thing in my house but it is what my brother wanted. the "artwork" is a poster he had on the wall of his garage. he does own a west coast choppers bike so he thought it "fit". i have had games inside my house since 95 i dont need to hide them. he wanted to hide his for some reason. also remember this thing was built 4 years ago. alot of things have changed in the hobby since then.
